  • I just find it uniquely American to act like if it isn’t currently what Americans do, then nobody must have ever tried it and to speak of the idea as if it is purely theoretical.

Again, I never acted like that. This is a bold assumption on your part.

If you’re against it and care, then next time instead of fear mongering in the theoretical, you can educate yourself and offer an informed opinion instead, using real data from the many countries where this is already a thing.

I'm aware of countries that take part such as Australia or Belgium. As such I'm aware of their faults too. You know the uninformed voters I was referring to? That's called a donkey vote sometimes. Your system fails to address that. Add on the logistics of tracking participation, dealing with penalties and what have you even accomplished? It genuinely sounds as if you want to control an aspect of peoples lives that should not be controlled.

Oh and since you're so very interested in American culture and what makes us different, has it ever occurred to you that with how nasty things can get on election days that compulsory voting with penalties might just be a further punishment to those already having unfortunate experiences? Republicans are known to harass and heckle other voters at the polls.

Look, there's a lot of things I believe we could adopt from other countries but there's also a lot of work to be done in general. We're not ready for something like this. Your attitudes and assumptions have shown that you are quite uninformed yourself for someone who claims to be so knowledgeable.

  • I feel like this might just be a culturally difference or something.

There are absolutely plenty of Americans who would just pick random names to get it over with. Even if we had a much more organized system that actually provided everyone with pamphlets educating them on candidates people here would still ignore it.

  • I like how this was just one point and you went off on your anti-american rant. I'm all for the first two out of the three that you mentioned there.

Congratulations, you have assumed and now you are an ass.

  • voting should be compulsory

This may or may not give you the outcome you're looking for. There are absolutely still people out there who don't pay that much attention to politics and having a bunch of people vote for a random name could be disastrous.

  • It's been a long time since I've bought frozen pizza so the temptation isn't there.

  • I am absolutely aware of her history as the district attorney of San Francisco and how she targeted young black men with nonviolent offenses throughout her career.

She was my least favorite out of the three options mentioned back in 2020 for VP but at the end of the day she's not Trump.

I won't agree with her on everything but Trump is this massive danger to society that can't be overlooked or allowed any ground.

  • They don't have anyone better right now.

At least now we don't have to deal with Republicans attacking Biden for his age and we can turn that around on Trump.

I could run a full list of pros and cons on the woman but at the end of the day we got an upgrade if this decision should have been made much earlier. Gotta always vote blue no matter who. Can't let Republicans get in.

  • Probably a free dating app too. Just another reminder, you are the product.

  • I'm not complaining. Only way I'd be happier with his VP pick is if he took up Rubio and forced him to give up Florida.

Vance is also a snake and he'll backstab the orange man at some point most likely.

  • Things are looking a lot better now that it's come out that the shooter was a registered republican.

  • Guessing this person made some sort of mistake.

A lot of people on Fetlife for example know to vet their partners thoroughly so they don't end up with a serial killer and to be careful with the information trail they leave on there.

  • We're cooked...

  • Man, people on lemmy need to look outside of their own bubbles a little more. There's more than just those in my camp and those against my camp.

There are uninformed voters who genuinely do not pay as much attention to politics as those of us on this platform do. Uninformed voters exist and they are influenced by the big headlines like this.

This is why other factors regarding a candidate such as whether or not they are likeable matter. It's not for me. It's not for you or any other hardline party entrenched voter. It's for them, the ones who barely pay attention.

  • I feel like you're a little out of touch here.

There are hardline Democrats and Republicans who aren't going to change their positions over anything. There's also many people who don't pay close attention to politics and only pick up on big news like this. Those are the people that are going to be influenced unfortunately. These people exist. They are uninformed, easily influenced and they can swing the outcome unfortunately.

  • This was the worst possible outcome. Unless someone intends on finishing the job it may as well be his election now.

He'll spend the rest of the election telling people how strong he is, how Biden could not have survived and he'll use the attack to validate all his claims of Democrat corruption/Republican righteousness.

  • “there’s a fuckton of low-information voters who are unlikely to vote for a guy who clearly displays Biden’s health issues”.

There's a lot of people who complain but know the reality of the situation and will vote according but low info voters are another issue altogether. People on here don't realize that.

There's a lot of people out there who don't pay nearly the same amount of attention to the news as the people on lemmy do. You have to work around these groups. This is why being likeable is important. These people lack most of the information, many of them don't even care. You can't just sit there and scream at them how they're ruining their own lives. That doesn't work.

  • Even if you look past the cruelties committed, it's still disappointing.

I've read a variety of books on various wars and those that we were involved in were mostly disappointing in regards to tactical decisions. Everything after the revolution either feels like a fluke or just simply feels as if we brute forced our way through with resources until the post WWII era where various campaigns failed due to guerilla warfare. I'm oversimplifying but especially early on in its life the country's militia was a bit unimpressive.

  • Yeah, I just snip the tips on the front ones usually. I've been doing it since he was little and while he doesn't appreciate it he has never fought or clawed me in the process of it.

  • I like ironing my clothes though and if you show up to a formal family event with a shirt that looks like you rolled around in it, then I will offer to iron for you before the next time.

  • If it's not corporations then it's PACs astroturfing. It's nothing new.

  • ArchWiki makes it so much easier these days.
