  • You're surely entitled to your opinion but I've been a Tildes user for a short while and have found the place to be lovely. Everyone seems very courteous and respectful, maybe to an extra degree. I've read some posts there that have said only a small number of people have been banned, around the order of a few every time membership opens up. You've and others on this thread have heard differently, though. This is just my one anecdotal experience.

  • Do you mean it's giving your problems downloading or using? Or do you mean you are resisting using it for some other reason? I'm using it right now and I am not techy in any way (I only resisted it because I thought downloading it would take some kind of technical prowess).

  • which is present in the footer of every major website in the world

OMG, I just realize that the little blue bird will be replaced with an X everywhere. A generic looking, forgettable X.

I also realize that instead of saying "follow me on Twitter" or "I'm on Twitter," people will say "follow me on X" and "I'm on X," which sounds like you're talking about Ecstacy or Molly. Very 1990s club kid. (He's Gen X so I'm sure he's well aware of how this sounds.)

I am seldom a conspiracy theorist but I am really starting to think that he is deliberately trying to destroy Twitter, I mean X.

  • I have:

    • Sold books to used bookstores
    • Sold books online (one at a time, so only ones that could earn a lot)
    • Sold books in lots on Craigslist and in local groups
    • Donated them to my local library and Salvation Army
    • Given them to my kids' school
    • Given them to friends (after inquiring about their interest in the specific titles or authors)
    • Left them.in a box outside labeled "Free Please Take"
    • Placed them.in the free book thingy near my home where neighbors leave or take books (it looks sort of like an old time call box except with shelves and a glass door on top)
    • Left them at hostels while traveling
  • Eventually Threads will be able to sort chronologically and will be able to filter just on who the user follows. It'll be IG without pictures in essence, and people will love it. Not my cup of tea (although I use IG occasionally to follow specific accounts) but bully for them. I like the idea of Twitter becoming less and less relevant at the very least.

  • One big difference I've noticed: Well mannered Northerners do not often say Ma'am or Sir, unless they're being snarky or work in the hospitality or food service industry (and even there it'snot all the time). I have rarely met a Northern child that ends a sentence addressed to an adult with Ma'am or Sir.. It sounds almost sarcastic from a Northernkid because it is hardly heard.. Or indicates a very strict upbringing. They are way more likely to call an adult by their first name, even. If a Southern kid tried that, whew. I've known some Southern children, teenage and adult, who always address their parents as Ma'am or Sir.

As you mentioned, there's no direct insulting to the face, at least none that I've encountered. But there sure are a lot of faux kind comments like "Bless his heart."

ETA: I edited this comment a bit upon reflection.

  • Thanks for this reply. That's probably the best way to use LLMs - general definitions or framing / summarizing of issues. And then always check the sources to make sure it was accurate. I've played around with ChatGPT and Bard and I think my mistake has been to be a little too granular or specific in my prompts. In most cases it produced results that were inaccurate (ETA: or flat out demonstrably wrong) or only fulfilled a part of the prompt.
