Thanks for this link. Have you done this yourself? How big of a challenge would this be to a tech novice? I ask because my kids have a couple of aging Chromebooks.

I subscribe to different news websites using a RSS app, or follow their Mastodon accounts, or get newsletters to my email. I like the news coverage from The NY Times, WaPo, Axios, NPR, The Guardian and The BBC. I don't check all the time, just when I feel like checking the news. I more frequently find news on link aggregator sites or forum type sites. You have to look around and build your sources.

I just went to Reddit.com. It looks like it's up but all of the posts on the main page are from 9 hrs ago or older (I didn’t scroll very far to see if there were newer ones).

I went to the search and looked up Redditalternatives. I got two error messages - "We had a server error..." and "Request failed." But the sub appeared behind the error pop ups. I see sub posts from 2 and 4 hrs ago.

Does this mean that Reddit is down? I don't want to engage too much with the site to find out.

Fake grass is a habitat and food source for nothing, and damages the soil beneath it.

This may be why my neighbors went with fake grass. They had the soil tested and it had a high percentage of lead. (They have a young child who was still crawling at that time.) They had to remove some of the top layer, IIRC, and put down some kind of protective membrane and then did fake grass on top. So this may depend on where you live. We have concrete in our backyard and bought playfalls (padded tiles that you sometimes see in playgrounds) to place under our playset. Luckily we did not have to deal with lead. We have plants that grow well in shade and a tree in our front yard (meaning, it's just for looks - our kids can't play in it.)

What's the environmental impact of fake grass? Isn't it better than real grass because it doesn't need water or pesticides? (I don't have a grass yard or lawn so I don't know what upkeep a fake one entails. My neighbor has one in their backyard, which basically replaced dirt with a few patches of grass from the prior owner. We have concrete from our prior owner. )

I told a friend who works in tech that we use Life360 and he blanched. He began to persuade me it would not be a good thing to use. Thanks to a post here I now turned on location tracking in Google Maps in our phones. I've been hearing that we should try to limit our use of Google but in this instance is it better than Life360? Are there any other alternatives for Android?

So if I'm to understand the article, this will allow Android device users to find their devices as well as AirTags? It read as if this will be just for Google and Apple branded devices. Speaking of privacy and tracking, would anyone know of a location app that can be trusted not to sell the tracking data? My family uses Life360 so that we can track our children's locations as they commute to and from school.or.run around the neighborhood, that sort.of thing. We have Android phones. I'm under the impression that if we all had iPhones we could track them using Apple apps,.which would not do anything funky with the data. This is something I wasn't too worried about until reading more about privacy, but I still need to know where my kids are.

Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense. I've been less aware of that and on recently, after having the phone for a while, have I been deleting many of the pre-installed apps.
