    That's technically the reason for both the requirement of the Presidential appointment (the President is elected) of a Supreme Court Justice, and for the Senate confirmation (Senators are also elected) of that appointment; the Constitution puts a lot of responsibility on the shoulders of representative governance.

    Unfortunately, American politics have become so rancorous, partisan and gullible that a popular vote would likely result in the same outcome as most other elections: whoever has the most money to influence the voters (representatives or members of the public) will win.
