  • Humans finally realizing that they are part of nature/biodiversity like all other species on Earth, instead of 'above nature'.

I doubt it'll happen, ever, even though they are working hard to get themselves extinct.

  • The Internet also has all information made available to it, not all information that is in the universe. Same as the fediverse users, internet users rely on search engines to find what they are looking for.

When all would mean all available in fediverse you would get issues:

    • even the smallest instance would explode like lemmy.world
    • to much choice makes people freeze up
    • you'd get reddit/facebook all over again. (with the required corporate mess as you need to play loads of employers to support the environment to supply the intel to the bubble that wants it)

It's to the user to search what he wants to see. I for one have 3 'main' accounts (world, ml and studio) and I subscribe to specific communities for each account (ml for development, studio for music related, world for 'rest') and each one I open the feed with subscribed. I'm totally not interested in all, to much junk (even on Lemmy).

To freely quote: All, you want all? You can't handle all. ;)

  • Indeed, most open source software is available under licenses like GPL, which enforces the preservation of those freedoms.

  • The terminologies used are all over the place, not really helping to make a point.

FOSS is not to clear as well, but helps.

  • Oh help, bloody idiot (litteraly). Looks like a pampered kid. Was he an only child? The 1st thing a child learns (when out of diapers) in a multiple kid family is to be clear when you need help and help yourself first/as much as possible. When a person is not clear what they want, they have only themselves to blame when others don't understand what they want. (but alas, it looks like you have some educating to do, but I doubt it'll stick)

I had an accident (several even) with blood loss, but even with a concussion (after a head-bud from a wheelbarrow, resulting in it and a huge nosebleed) it was clear that just shouting would be useless, so I went to the spot where the help was available. Yes, blood all around, most of it on clothes and outside, but that could be cleaned. I know my wife would rather clean up later then find a non-functioning husband.

  • If you apply what is written at https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/NetworkTarget/#cutthecraphowdoimakesurethatmyservicestartsafterthenetworkisreallyonline it will work.

Then I'll need to do a global rewrite of all distrubution delivered service files and replace network.target with network-online.target. Then I don't understand why maintainers all keep using network.target. For every service that needs some kund of netwirj active I alkready have iverrides to link then to the virtual or physical interfaces they actually use.

Systemd-networkd has a learning curve, once you learn it you’ll find it superior and more flexible than anything else.

I still find it a solution desperately looking for a problem to solve. Yes, you can control loads of dependencies, but you could already do that with the init scripts. The main selling point on introduction was 'it is faster'. Why would you want something faster when you use it once every kernel update? When you design your solutions correctly (redundant), you won't even notice a reboot of 1 system in the setup.

  • I installed minminguard because of your comment, but I can’t see it is helping at all, I had AdAway rooted version before so I never saw ads but the empty squares.

Minminguard is an xposed module that I run via lsposed (xposed development halted, lsposed is a magisk module that needs you to activate minminguard for the app. (and then in minminguard either add the app to the blacklist or use the whitelist and don't add it there) It's a lot of hoops you need to jump trough.

However, the empty squares stay even with minminguard, as the app uses the same 'message block' for posts and ads. (at least that's how it looks) WIth both running, it could well be possible that adaway already filtered before minminguard. Here it also showed 0 ads blocked (no other ad blocker), but I saw already several empty ad blocks. (so that counter isn't to accurate) You could try with adaway temporary disabled to see what it does (and check if you missed one of the hoops).

  • I totally hope you'll get enough admins to help out. Alas, I'm way to short on time to commit to this now. After 28y sysadmin and developing on Unix and Linux, I could use some project that is useful, but alas, no time to spare now. (Maybe later)

  • I'd say they made the image, started it, did minor adjustments and didn't delete the command history before stopping it and starting to deploy the image.

Looks harmless, although a tad sloppy.

  • I'm running on a rooted android, magisk, lsposed and minminguard as chain to block ads and remove the ad spaces. I still have to see one ad I didn't want. (And those in games for 'goodies' just run unwatched)

I'll check if sync has ads here, but I doubt I'll see them.

About the type of ads, no app developer has any control over what is shown, as they offerl the space to ad providers and they select the junk they place there.

Edit: Installed sync, added to lsposed list to run the minminguard module on, opened it and 'sponsored content' blocks, but no ads. (Saw one ad when I opened sync without the lsposed config change) I'm guessing I need to restart the device to get rid of the blocks which should hold the ads. (Or those blocks are standard and the regular content is replaced by sponsored content)

Edit 2: those sponsored content blocks are just standard blocks with either the ad or "sponsored content" as text. Uninstalled it again, as I prefer Liftoff.

  • I highly advice against nfs mounts between a vps and home network, even with a static ip and over a vpn.

When you need data that's on the nas at home on the vps, it's best to place a copy of that data on the vps local storage. It can act as a backup as well and the original data can be kept safely at home.

What are you trying to do with this setup? Maybe we can find another solution for you.

  • Ah, ok. That's for the old ones. I'm using the nanoHD and a gifted AC lite. The devices work nicely, the software however, I'm not liking it a lot. As long as they work they can stay, but already I'm battling to keep their software running, as I'm running Debian trixie and unifi wants a mongodb install that isn't available anymore.

  • Open Source: The source is available to inspect for security issues and can be improved upon by anybody who wants to participate. Most of the times the software development is financed by donations in cash from users or in time from developers.

Free software: Software you get for free, usually paid for by siphoning off data, running ads (which include trackers), ... sometimes open source, most of the times closed source.

  • I guess it bothers you as it's a command, not a request. I'm not to responsive to commands as well. My wife doesn't give them, but states a situation, usually expecting I drop everything and respond. (almost as bad)

As someone already reacted, in the car I get a 'look' as well, but th's usually because she sees an old car. (When busy with traffic, I miss it, but we have some nice spots)

Some consideration from your partner is appreciated though, but that requires telling what is wrong as well. Without communication the problem only escalates. (Which usually doesn't bode well for relationships)

  • I think I'd bring it a thriftstore. (Or donate it to somebody that could use it ;) )

I'm having the same issue with and RPi 1, 2 and 2 bananapies. (R1 and R2) I'm not sure if the BPi R2 is good enough for a kodi setup, the rest is to light.

  • I'm using ifupdown2 and have services depending on the state of virtual network devices (BindsTo=sys-devices-virtual-net-.device).

I hate systemd with a passion, as the refuses to wait for networking when you haven some service specified to be started After networking, but it start when the start of networking actions has sbeen tarted (not after networking is finished bringing up everything)

The only think I let systemd do is monitor the state of the devices and set the interface name, as udev seems to mess these names up in combination with systemd (and there is to much depending on systemd now in Debian to get rid of the junk)

  • The only thing worse of throwing away a bag of bad beans is having to drink the coffee from it.

I took the vacuumcleaner and removed the beans from the machine (Jura) trice now. Once because I got 'extra dark roast' beans that just tasted like cremated beans (high on ashes, low on coffee), once because I got Dutch DE red beans (tried them against better judgement even though I hate the grounded version) and once because my wife mistook the chocelate beans for coffee beans. (Got them out to save the grinder, which was the only time the rest wasn't binned, as I love chocelate)

Nothing worse apart from a mistake then th have to endure it a lot longer. Call defeat, remove the beans from the machine with a vacum cleaner or plain gravity (turn it upside down) and throw away the lot. (And note them somewhere so you'll never buy them again)

  • How do you manage to flash them, as OpenWRT states that of 2018 they aren't supported anymore. (Ubi decided to sign the firmware)
