  • I've been thinking about getting one of those little vertical displays that are like 8 inches wide for status info. I have enough screen real estate but being able to load up certain things in it to monitor would be cool.

  • That's the one! It's also in the garage. Still worked a while back when I hooked it up through a few adapters.

I always dumpster dived for computers. My buddy showed me where to go and when so we'd upgrade every year together when one of the local junior colleges threw out a bunch of stuff. We were always a few years behind but we had more tech toys than folks on the edge of poverty had the chance to pick up back in those days.

I remember being a teen in the late 90s with some computers to use and some to sell and we ended up selling enough to both get Bigfoot drives. A couple of gigs was MASSIVE compared to the TI stuff we both started on.

He's still got the tax software with the booklet and ads featuring Bill Cosby running around somewhere. He's also got a tattoo of the motherboard of the TI-99/4a because he said without it he wouldn't be where he is today. But he doesn't like Bill Cosby anymore.

  • I wish I could remember where I read it, but I do remember reading either an article or paper that laid out that when people are victimized, other abusers tend to be able to spot that somehow. Something about body language and it's all subconscious.

I don't have the answer here except to just build a shell and be a dick for a while, but I do want to say I am genuinely sorry you have to deal with that. Always being the victim or always putting on a mask is fucking exhausting and soul draining.

  • I figured they were talking about the Oregon Trail generation. It's made up of the folks who were old enough and young enough to play the game in schools and spans across parts of X and millennials.

  • As a suburban white person, fuck a chain. If you see someone stealing from one of the big guys, no you fucking didn't.

But I know I ain't the only guy in the burbs. And I know my neighborhood ain't the same as the ones 30-40 miles north. I can absolutely imagine those folks would be terrified if they found out that I didn't give a shit about folks stealing from Walmart or Kroger.

  • You're right. The other side of that is I did a little contract work for a company that is working on software for unmanned commercial flights.

Those guys actually made me feel better. They were all super smart, meticulous, and incredibly good at their jobs. It was the first environment I've ever been in where I felt like I could just barely keep up. I always felt one commit away from fucking things up. So I moseyed on down the road as soon as the thing I was contracted for was finished.

It was such a cool job and they offered me a permanent place. I just couldn't feel behind every single day for the rest of my career until my system destroyed people's lives.

  • My family is like this. All we do is make fun of each other. It's kept mostly internal (including close family friends) but that's how we show love.

I still dress like a ranch hand about a quarter of the time even though I'm only out there to lend a hand once in a while. I showed up at my parent's place while my siblings were in town while I was wearing my boots and a pearl snap shirt. In our group chat my dad still asks "Hey Cowboy, did ya yee any haws today?" and that's been over a year.
