  • I'm not a fan of digital only or a fan of Steam in general. You could use a steam deck as a GOG deck and only play DRM free games. You also won't get access to AAA games from big publishers without DRM but those games either don't come to switch or are heavily nerfed anyway.

To me thats missing the point of the thing being a a handheld console with SteamOS rather a PC. If you use it as a PC instead of a console it IS a pretty open ecosystem. But then it loses its main advantage over a normal PC or the other handhelds in the market which is its tight integration with SteamOS and the ability to be a handheld PC gaming console. It does keep its secondary advantage of price though. The Steam Deck is a good piece of hardware but I don't prefer its form factor for what I see as its niche as a Switch competitor.

On the contrast, the switch is made to play switch games and I'm able to play any physical cart on any switch with a working cartridge reader without ever connecting the system online. That's the advantage the Switch has over the Steam Deck when it comes to games and DRM

  • I’m not going to play word police but I am going to attempt to change your mind. Dumb used to be the medical terminology to mean the same thing as what you said and it’s not considered a slur or a disparaging insult. And so the word does have more bite and it does have power.

I’m not going to get offended if you keep using it as an insult but using it says more about the emotional maturity of the person who said it than it does about the person being insulted by it.

  • I just have all my old consoles, a crt, and an input switcher for composite and hdmi. 7 consoles on my bookshelf and 5 more in my entertainment center. I could probably save a healthy amount of space in my basement with emulation lol

  • If Apollo for Reddit still worked, I’d probably still be there too. But at the same time I’m pretty thankful that things happened the way they did because it really opened my eyes to how dissatisfied I was with corporate social media and I feel so much more engaged in my hobbies and their communities now on the fediverse.

It helps that I am already primarily interested in tech, web, and networking (with some retro gaming mixed in) so the fediverse was already a suitable replacement. I feel for people whose communities are dead here.

  • If I have to I’ll start using clamshell flip phones but they need to figure out the crease problem and durability problem. I had a Motorola razer 1st gen a few years ago that I loved except for the fact it stopped working after 6 months. The touch screen stopped working and the lcd started to turn green until the only sceeen that worked was the small outer screen.

  • I agree with your comment. As you say, I doubt the training sets are reflective of reality either. I guess that leaves tampering with the prompts to gaslight the AI into providing results it wasn't asked for is the method we've chosen to fight this bias.

We expect the AI to give us text or image generation that is based in reality but the AI can't experience reality and only has the knowledge of the training data we provide it. Which is just an approximation of reality, not the reality we exist in. I think maybe the answer would be training users of the tool that the AI is doing the best it can with the data it has. It isn't racist, it is just ignorant. Let the user add diverse to the prompt if they wish, rather than tampering with the request to hide the insufficiencies in the training data.

  • Edit: further discussion on the topic has changed my viewpoint on this, its not that its been trained wrong on purpose and now its confused, its that everything its being asked is secretly being changed. It's like a child being told to make up a story by their teacher when the principal asked for the right answer.

They’ve purposefully overrode its training to make it create more PoCs. It’s a noble goal to have more inclusivity but we purposely trained it wrong and now it’s confused, the same thing as if you lied to a child during their education and then asked them for real answers, they’ll tell you the lies they were taught instead.

  • You would think that this would make it redundant but who knows? I’d guess not anytime soon since the sports app doesn’t have any actual news in it despite claiming the opposite in the press release.

  • No NFL or CFB is really strange, I just chalked it up being the offseason but the WNBA is in the offseason and it’s still listed. As well as MLB despite it just being the start of spring training

  • So far the app is pretty barebones. Some things don’t make any sense like having to open up a game summary to be able to see standings rather than each league having their own standings page.

I also don’t see any links to news or streaming services but maybe that integration is coming soon…

  • I think everyone has done this. I know I have. I believe I used dmda to recover all my photos back. Unfortunately I lost all the metadata for about 3000 photos. It took years to manually retap and redate them all but at least I didn’t lose them forever
