  • You are being downvoted, but you are correct.

BMI on it's own isn't a good metric. Waist measurement (i.e. measuring visceral fat around the gut) is a far better measure of health, and when used with BMI, you get a far more accurate picture of health than one over the other.

This is why you can have someone at a "healthy" BMI, but they are fat in the belly (and nowhere else!). Their health is a great risk, despite being a healthy weight and BMI.

I noticed my scale going up as I trained more for cycling, despite my body fat dropping). It's muscle weight, despite my BMI now being "worse" than when I was lighter with less muscle.

  • Makes sense to me. I was at my most sedentary during the pandemic.

Interestingly, some people, for the first time, got fit during the pandemic. There was a massive bike boom, people were out walking and hiking again, they invested in cooking at home, relaxation, better quality sleep, etc.

It's a shame that so many went backwards, though.

  • I have never encountered a water bottle getting chipped or leaving shavings.

I've heard of people complain that steel bottles that use steel tops "scrape" together when you are using the lids, and that can cause metal particles to shed into the water.

That's one of the reasons why most steel bottles have plastic lids.

  • The cynic in me wants to believe that it really separates this large, heavy motorcycle from "e-bikes", because reporting on some of this stuff tends to be really vauge and misleading.

We've had "e-scooter" crashes where the article will show a mobility scooter, but the public knows "e-scooter" as those things people stand up on and behave badly on (from their perspective). Without distinction, you're throwing the wrong vehicles under the bus (no pun intended).

  • Davis said that over the last two decades, most of the terror attacks in Canada have been perpetrated by ideologically motivated violent extremism.

“We’re not talking about al-Qaida and Islamic State. We’re talking about anti-Muslim, ‘Incel’ or anti-government extremists..."

    So, right-wing domestic terrorists?

  • So many:

    • Unsubscribe links that are magically broken.
    • Newsletter popups when you're trying to view content.
    • Websites that are paywalled coming up in search engines.
    • Broken shopping cart payment systems.
    • The fact that it's an assault on your senses to browse without an adblocker.
    • "Sign in to view content" for articles, posts, etc.
    • Banking sites that time out after a minute.
    • likewise, shopping cart sessions that expire before you're done shopping.
    • AI generated articles that don't even sound like they're referring to the right topic.
    • Recipe websites that have a 15 page story for each recipe without a way to skip to the actual recipe.
    • "Endless scrolling" that prevents you from accessing links at the bottom of the page.
    • Business websites that don't list an address.
    • "Password must be short enough to guess."
    • "How did we do? " emails.
    • Automatic newsletter sign-up.
    • Desktop websites that act as if you're on a phone (i.e swipe through grocery filters instead of scrolling through them).
    • Unreadable, archaic, and/or low-contrast fonts.
    • "This content is not available in your country."

I could list dozens more. 😮‍💨

  • Being trained on videos means it has no ability to adapt, improvise, or use knowledge during the surgery.

Edit: However, in the context of this particular robot, it does seem that additional input was given and other training was added in order for it to expand beyond what it was taught through the videos. As the study noted, the surgeries were performed with 100% accuracy. So in this case, I personally don't have any problems.

  • Calming measures work.

Yes, they do. And NIMBYs hate them more than automated traffic cameras.

    Speed cameras do not.

They have demonstrated to be effective in all the Canadian municipalities who have implemented them. Do you have evidence to suggest otherwise?

The problem is people don't like getting caught for breaking the law, so they either vandalize or petition against these cameras.

Alternatively, they could drive the posted speed limit and not run red lights. 💁‍♂️

  • Stats Canada didn't have those figures in the data I was looking at, but yes, that's important! There are so many other important metrics, too: affordability vs wages; commute times (then vs. now), etc.

If only one metric moved for the better, are we really better off?

  • Depends on your perspective.

The lowest it's been since 1990 is 4.5%, and that was a post-pandemic bounce-back in 2022. It's been over 10%, but the average is 6.6%. We are only slightly above that, which is amazing considering we are under direct attack from the States.

I would expect those number to drop as Canada severs ties with the US and builds a more robust internal economy.

And remember, every time you "buy Canadian" over something that would have come from the States, you are adding jobs to our workforce while taking them away (hopefully) from the American labour pool 🤗

  • Interesting, it's slightly slower for me through the web interface both with a direct connect to my network, or when proxied through the internet. Still, we're talking seconds here, and the results are so accurate!

Immich has effectively replaced the (expensive) Windows software Excire Foto, which I was using for on-device contextual search because Synology Photos search just sucks. Excire isn't ideal to run from Linux because it has to be done through a VM, so I'm happy to self-host Immich and be able to use it even while out of the house.

  • OK, indexing finished some time yesterday and I ran a few searches like:

    "Child wearing glasses indoors"

    "Cars with no wheels"

    "Woman riding a bike"

Results come up (immich on android) in three seconds.

But the quality of the results do appear to be considerably better with ViT-B-16-SigLIP2__webli compared to the default model.

    I'm pretty happy. 👍

  • Nope. Amazon Prime, YouTube Premium, Netflix, etc. will all still track your behaviour, collect your data to be used against you, and still make you the product.

Corporate greed and enshittification have ruined everything.

  • Speed doesn't get you around faster in urban areas, especially not in residential neighbourhoods, because stop signs and traffic lights (when not ignored) extend your trip more.

That's why as a cyclist, I'm often catching up to cars going 3-4x faster than me. And when cars are queued up at stops, I'm often passing those "fast" cars, too.

But 30km/h is less likely to kill people, which is a good thing.

  • Religious texts, such as the Bible, will be allowed on the shelves.

... as most of the books Nicolaides said he was looking to take off shelves deal with 2SLGBTQ+ subject matter.

Have the Satanic Temple republish those books so they remain accessible.
