  • We could print to stone maybe, with redoundancy and CRC codes embedded, using chisels.

That could last a bit longer, maybe.

    /s

  • Indeed you are, but if you release it you probably want people to use it, otherwise why release at all? Going github/gitlab way just make that easier.

You are free to do what you want ofc, just my thoughts.

  • Why not publish on github or gitlab? Or setup a gitea/similar website and post it?

I did so with a few of my small stuff.

  • Did I? Maybe because I am not an English speaker? Good to know tough, I went by instinct

  • Foreword: I only stream my music, from FLAC preferably. I don't own vynils but mostly i don't own CD's anymore either.

CD is dead and should be dead. Rip it and stream it, full stop. No need or reason to keep a degrading digital format when you can just rip it (full quality and store as FLAC) and stream it. That's the whole point.

Vynil instead gives you the experience of listening, with all the associated crap/fun depending on your POV.

So while there is a case for vynil today, but I don't share it, there is zero case for CDs. Just download the bits. Don't waste plastic and shit with a polluting and degrading medium that make no sense today that downloading a full quality uncompressed audio file takes seconds.

  • I have read that kopia has corrupted Dara systematically in the past. What's your experience with it?

  • Restic has a neat web GUI called Backrest

  • Thats perfect

  • Restic or Borg on your side, a safe and remote destination on the other side.

use restic, with backrest web GUI, and cannot be happier.

As for remote site, I use a remote machine I rent, but there are plenty of providers around, shop a bit... Or find a friend for reciprocal backup?

  • Synchting is the way... Been using it since ever. Easy to setup, works flawlessly, doesn't get into the way.

I use it for server, PC, laptop and android devices.

... Then you want to backup (Borg, restic...) your synched files of course ....

  • Nginx "just works(tm)" had never got into the way, its been rock solid and has not changed significantly over the years.

Why would I need something else?

  • Not all cars and drivers have accidents, but everybody in his/hers life WILL need health care of some kind

  • I settled with silverbullet.md self hosted, plus native editor on android, and synchting to keep stuff up to date.

  • It's dead to me too then. Useless crap. Maybe the best hardware and software, but still closed crap.

  • Nope, all immich metadata is stored in the db, maybe the files themselves are in the folders, but all info on albums and tags and such would be lost in immich database in 20 years time.

While my 20+ years of photos with metadata stored and sorted by album/folders will still be accessible in the next 20 years.

Its a matter of not depending on one tool specific formats but on standards and easy accessible metadata.

Nothing against immich at all on my side.

  • Database is a non starter for me too.

With plain MD files you can sync and edit everywhere with any tools.

Sorry to say that tools comes and go... My notes don't. In 20 years time I will be using different tools, same notes.

The same is true for photos, and that's why Immich is also a no go for me.

  • Can you unlock them easily and still have valid warranty as well? That would be a great point
