  • It was probably common but these are typically short-term "payday loan" type deals that you're expected to pay back in a week or two. 400% APR comes out to 7.69% per week.

These things are an absolute trap because if you don't have $300 or whatever to cover your bills this paycheck, you definitely aren't going to have $380 two weeks from now to pay it back and that's precisely where you get steamrolled.

  • Hmm I wonder if the game now is for Trump to 'negotiate' a deal where one of his cronies buys it and turns it into another right-wing propaganda machine just like Musk did with Twitter. I could see that as a reason why he'd backtrack on it so abruptly.

  • I want to assemble a filament composed of teeny tiny bits of filaments of different colors - like half-inch bits - to create a sort of "jawbreaker candy" filament.

Props to you for going through the effort, but damn does that sound like a huge PITA.

I wonder if you could achieve the same by using a mold with scrap bits of filament in the oven or something.

  • In the 2020 Oregon fires, everything was coated in ash even though we were 20-30 miles away. I used a respirator while working outside and it didn't take long for the filters to get all sooty. You'd come outside in the morning and your car would be covered in it as if we'd had fresh snowfall. I have no doubt that it caused problems for someone with emphysema.

  • The difference? American data collection is done for profit, and Chinese data collection is done for control. Pick your poison.

No the difference is that these US companies give the US government a backdoor into everyone's data (while also harvesting it all for profit) while the Chinese apps don't in favor of giving the Chinese government a backdoor into everyone's data. They don't give a shit about propaganda and brainwashing occurring which is why they'll allow the app to stay up in the US just so long as it's an American company controlling it here because then they can install their backdoor for the US government.

  • Jesus christ $44M divided by 800 victims is $55k per person. What a bunch of fucking scumbags. My mother fell for a similar ploy (one among many) and it's a bit soul crushing to have to constantly explain why she shouldn't keep sending money and that no her book isn't being showcased at some exhibit, no that guy isn't calling from Microsoft, no that "wealthy, generous investor" isn't really going to give you a guaranteed 30% return on your money.

    Fuck these people!
