  • Bluesky is what happens when someone with a corporate mindset wants to make something new and good. Mastodon happens when hobbyists get together and make something. Ive heard BlueSky has a board of people in charge to make sure it doesn't end up like twitter. Exactly what one would expect a company to do. Make sure something doesnt go wrong? Put a few people in charge. Mastodon just has the whole community. I may be wrong here as I dont use either. Right now Im just wondering what will happen when BlueSkys provider comes knocking with the hosting bill. As mass social media migrations are rare, its just a shame people are leaving twitter for another big tech site instead of something more community grown.

  • I mean, he is using his position to gain wealth and power. Im sure he didnt get there by being stupid. No, hes not some Tony Stark level engineer and his intellectual and engineering achievements are nothing of note. Hes really good at swindling people and getting a large proportion of the population to like him, that takes some talent.

  • The applications aren't that good. That's the only thing keeping me from switching completely. Subtitles, aspect ratio, audio track selection just don't work as expected. In some cases I can only pick the aspect ratio and no subs and sometimes the other way around? Also if I have no subs for a movie, I can't search for them on the fly - good feature of plex. As it stands, jellyfin video player is not up to my standards and I can't switch yet. I use it for porn though. That works fine.

  • I've never been one to mod games, I'm pretty vanilla when it comes to gaming. Play the base game and thats it. Rarely do i even try any dlc. With that said, I thoroughly enjoyed Frelancer discovery back in the day. It is a freelancer multilayer mod that brought a lot more content and enabled multi player once the official servers were gone.

  • He can do 20 more years. Weekend at Bernies is also possible. No crazy scheme is off the table in today's America. Trump may also just be laying out the red carpet for some even crazier lunatic. Maybe hereditary dictatorship? Elon? Nothing is off the table at this point. Fuck me and the bleak possible future.

  • Chicken and egg problem. Tariffs can make work or products once deemed unprofitable, profitable once more. It is likely, the US already has computer production facilities which may at this point not profitable to scale up or enter a consumer market. Intels CPUs are produced in the states already, maybe what stopped a vendor from using them in their own laptops was strong market competition which may now be lower due to tariffs? What Im trying to say, though, is that it will take time to see the results of Trumps market intervention. In the immediate future, Acer laptops will increase in price, long term.. we can only speculate.

  • I mean, probably someone at qualcomm will likely take his place? They need drivers for themselves anyway and will probably continue providing them. I have no idea who the contributors of similar drivers are but I'd imagine Intel makes drivers for their wifi chips themselves and contributes them to the kernel since they count as one of the biggest contributors.

  • The physical medium is a license as well. But that's semantics. We can all agree if you own physical, it cant be (realistically) taken away. You can still own physical. You can still take that power back (unless the game requires online). When I got a PS5, I was planing on finally ending my attachment to physical discs... but I just couldn't do it. To this day, I still buy PS5 discs, I haven't spent anything on PSN, but had PS+ for maybe two years and Im well aware those PS+ games were transactional. I cant do that anymore on PC so if steam dies, so does my library. At least my physical discs will be OK. Now on to my next fear... disc rot. Will I actually be able to boot up the Halo 3 DVD when im 80 and play it?

  • Debian and either do containers or dont. I have most services without container and a few with, no issues.

One thing I dont see mentioned by anyone is power draw. Figure out how long you intend on running it and what energy expenditure you are comfortable with. Old hardware will usually draw more power.

  • I think what they dont allow is having a store in their store. You can easily install a third party store on Android at least but you cant do it through googles store. They dont care if you do, they just wont help you do it. AFAIK, theres legislation in the works to prevent this since not offering third party stores is monopolistic akin to Internet Explorer being pre installed on windows.

Play services is not the same as Andoird. Manufacturers can decide what goes.
