  • Mens rea and cognitive ability to consent/form intent is a very interesting subject, especially when it comes to minors. Society supersedes its judgement for the judgement of the minor where the minor is deemed not to have the sufficient mental capacity to consent to an action with full understanding of the consequences and context (sometimes only acquired through age or experience). It's usually also only exercised as a means of protecting the minors (e.g., ability to consent to sexual acts with adults when underage). Criminal acts are slightly different though as it's generally more about the individuals (minor or otherwise) capacity to form intent to actively harm/deprive/defraud/whatever in the context of what would be normal and reasonable for someone of like experience, knowledge, and circumstance. And even then, minors have a separate legal track in acknowledgement of their inability to fully grasp context and impact (see previous point about consent above) for all but most egregious and grievous acts.

  • They did benefit from it and one could argue did sign up for it, though obviously it would be disingenuous of me to attempt to equate the circumstances and urgency of healthcare decisions as compared to career and college decisions.

  • Reread what I said: I agree that nothing major has been introduced by Twitter lately, but to say that they contributed nothing to the tech world since their inception, which is what the user above me was claiming, is disingenuous. Both can be true: Twitter can be a flaming pile of shit now (and it is), and it can also have been a very influential and technologically forward-thinking org at one point in time early on in their inception

  • Just getting something like this out of committee and on the floor for debate would be huge. Unfortunately it stands no chance with the current congress

  • What method do you use for flash freezing and do you air seal manually or using a machine? I'd lobe to be able to flash freeze and preserve a few home cooked meals for my wife's upcoming pregnancy so we don't have to think about cooking with the new one in the house

  • All violence is not equal. Unjustified and unprovoked violence is not the same as justified violence in self defense, for example. To say that one does not support violence is to paint with a very large brush and over important nuance and context

  • I agree with you that no one in the tech world is looking at Twitter for advice atm, but to say nothing changed at Twitter in any significant way since it's inception is disingenuous at best. Twitter's rapid growth and adoption led to the development of a number of key technologies needed to run global 24/7 uptime services at scale, just to name one macro example.

  • Both of the articles you've submitted seem to be built on nonsense, designed to divide and rile people up, and come from shit sources equivalent to that of a blogspot site. Take this low effort shit back to reddit where it belongs

  • I get that it's topical, but I guess I just don't really care about what's happening on reddit. If I wanted to see Reddit content I'd be on Reddit. Combined with the irony of the fact that it's taken on the app, it just becomes a bit of a circle jerk.

  • Jfc didn't we just fucking go through this? This show is getting old

  • Yeah the main difference is that there is no echo-chamber algorithm serving content in the way we're used to with more corporate social media. It's up to you to discover what you like and build your feed

  • Not yet. But you can use a kbin account and set up a feed for your lemmy and mastodon instances.

  • Mmm...which flavor of privacy invasion would you like?

  • There is no algorithm feeding you.

    Mmmm say it again

  • I remember stars covering the sky in a shower of light. Not just a few here and there, but the literal Milky Way band. Light pollution has grown at a concerning pace in my own lifetime and I wonder what it will look like when my children are grown.

  • Agreed. I found many users there unable to distinguish between capitalism itself as a system, authoritarian and corpocratic political systems, and individuals who live within those systems.

  • Checking in. Tried a few after coming here from RIF and Liftoff has been the closest to RIF imo.
