  • Government proceeds to ignore all recommendations and set up an investment fund that, in the event of a positive ROI, would go towards addressing wealth inequality by hiring private companies to distribute welfare payment increases.

  • Consultants produce knowledge gruel, which as it turns out, is a really in-demand product right now as we descend on our current path to 'fuck around and find out' land. Academics and scientist types tell governments and businesses what they don't want to hear. Consultants will sell them knowledge gruel disguised as cake.

  • Covid made me realise just how much we live in different versions of reality and how harmful that is during a crisis that requires everyone to be on the same page. At the beginning of the lockdowns I joked about how some people would rather die than comply with basic public health practices....and then it actually fucking happened in real life. Not only that but they took down other people with them. Not such a funny joke anymore.

  • I'm not even from the US and honestly it was a sobering moment for me as well. I realised how people like Hitler get into power. Before 2016 I knew it was possible like cognitively but Trump being elected made it feel real in a way it never had before.

  • I think understanding the difference between equality and equity would help in understanding some of the points Indigenous advocates have been making throughout this campaign. Equity is about rights and needs according to what different groups experience in terms of disadvantage. Essesntially, equality looks different for different groups of people. Equality is a great value to have and strive for, but because of our colonial history Indigenous Australians do not have equality. In whatever way you measure it there is a significant gap in inequality between Indigenous and non- Indigenous Australians. Indigenous Australians also have different needs (culturally appropriate services, inclusive education systems etc) and rights (land rights, cultural rights etc). The best people to advise on how to close the gap is Indigenous Australians themselves. That's what the voice is about.

  • We need to develop better ethical frameworks and regulation. Doesn't matter what the tech is, it's about how it's used and for what aims.

  • As an autistic person this technology could actually allow me to access the community without being overwhelmed. This is revolutionary and would change my life.

  • Nah I see WA as Texas and QLD as Florida.

  • If it was simply a difference of political opinion and they supported some run of the mill politician who's shit but not like fascist level shit then it wouldn't be relationship ending. Politicians are mostly fucked and not worth losing relationships over.

If it was an overt piece of shit fascist then that would be a different story. Usually people who support fascists become quite radicalised. Shit is culty af. And if this friend did not have a problem with overt prejudice and genocidal attitudes then that would be relationship ending for me.

  • The foundation of the Australian colony is predicated on the notion that Indigenous People are not real humans and therefore the land was unoccupied.

  • They weren't from the yes campaign. If anything I'd say they're likely progressive no voters - but that's just my assumption.

It was a socialist alternative protest not unlike something you'd see most days on your typical university campus.

  • Sounds like it was a protest not a hate rally as the no campaign are making it out to be. It wasn't even an explicitly pro yes protest. Looks like they were protesting against racism and fracking, as is their democratic right.

  • Sexual violence

  • You should look up our history of colonisation. The nazis took inspiration from it.

  • I'm jealous of you South Australia. Sitting here in the sunshine state wondering why the fuck we aren't winning this race.

  • I initially read this as him saying world war 3 and then realised he actually said world war 2 and I can't stop sad laughing at just how fucking stupid this.

  • It's better than America but not as good as the democratic socialist countries in Europe. Years of systematic underfunding haven't helped either. Same issue with a lot of our public services. There's a cooked faction of conservative politicians who have never supported universal healthcare and would jump at the opportunity to replace it with a private free market system. The Australian public arguably doesn't have much of an appetite for this though and any direct attempts to destroy our healthcare system will likely not be well supported. Instead they've opted for covert attempts to destroy it.

What concerns me though is the ongoing impact of covid. We have always historically had quite a robust public health approach in Australia. For example, it's illegal not to wear a helmet when riding a bike / scooter, we were the first country to implement plain packaging cigarette products, and our initial response to the covid pandemic was relatively strong despite having an absolute fuckwit of a leader at that time. However, in my opinion, the way covid has been politicised has not only put us in a worse position to manage the ongoing pandemic, but also future pandemics and public health problems. Since covid I see more people riding bikes / scooters without a helmet, fewer people make an effort to reduce the spread of diseases, and are generally less considerate of how their behaviour impacts other people. These are just my observations but it feels like there's been an unnecessary backlash against public health in general.

  • They did but I don't think America has ever had a president so outwardly supportive of nazis in the way that Trump is. The holocaust started with events similar to what went down at this particular rally. It was very much a sign of shit escalating. Now you have people waving nazi flags to protest Disney, so it's fair to say shit has indeed escalated.

  • I'm 30 and don't feel like a have a future in the way that other generations before me had. Can't even imagine how those younger than me must be feeling. I at least got to fuck around a bit in my early youth as you could still afford to then. I grew up knowing climate change was coming, but it wasn't until my mid 20s when I started to lose hope in our ability to address it. Still got a good 25 years of feeling hopeful though. Kids these days get none of that.

  • I've always thought it's because they're not Iran / Muslim. Israel is an important geopolitical ally in a region that is quite hostile to the US generally.
