If you look at the history of Indigenous policy you'll see that many versions of advisory bodies have been legislated only to eventually be removed. Plus the symbolic value of constitutional recognition can't be understated. A tokenistic gesture, sure, but Australia is still the last settler colonial nation in the global north to recognise their First Peoples. For the sake of just the basic values of a modern nation we should at the very least recognise the people who were here first in our constitution.

Mine (Lilley) looks like it's going to be just over the line for no. It's inner north Brisbane - not quite inner city, not quite outer suburbs. I'm so dissapointed because I really hoped that it would at least vote yes.

How much time have you got? I guess the biggest factor is that referendums are hard to pass in Australia, especially when the campaign becomes partisan. And this one was VERY partisan. But also Australia has a particular type of racist ignorance when it comes to our First Nations Peoples and our colonial history in general. We're now currently the only settler colonial nation that has not recognised its First Nations Peoples in their constitution. Settler colonialism is not a competition, but if it was Australia kind of wins the gold. I say that as a white Australian.

It's such a ridiculous justification. If they were using the threat of terrorism as a justification then that would make some sense at least.

Anyone got any suggestions for a possible alternative provider? Currently with belong and would rather just change than fuck around with whatever this is.

I don't like thinking of the individual people this way but personally I think Nazism like a virus. It's always dormant and attaches itself onto subcultures and fringe communities. It evolves and adapts to different contexts, always trying to exploit opportunities for division and hatred. And it thrives in democratic societies that tolerate different points of view - it exploits that. Essentially any complex, cosmopolitan society is always at risk of a nazi epidemic breaking out. Similar to viruses, you can never really erradicate them but you can try to immunise your society and prevent it from taking over your democratic systems.

This seems like a really unevenly weighted war. Israel has nukes and is supported by most of the west. Vengeance and violence are also never a good mix so this will likely get ugly fast. It'll be interesting to see where the line is, if it exists at all, on how much violence the West will publicly support.

Federal government (Australia) recently extended our pharmaceutical benefits scheme so that we can get double the amount of medicine for the same price. State government (Queensland) did a huge cost of living rebate for energy bills which has been super helpful.

But Australia did start buying subs from the US not long after this...

I love your enthusiasm for research but if only it were that easy. I'm a phd researcher and my field is sexual violence. It's really not that easy to just go out and interview child sex offenders about their experiences of perpetration.

I understand that this needs to be reported on but holy shit the mainstream media needs to find a way to do this without giving a platform to nazi content. This is what nazis want and they are likely celebrating this coverage right now.

Yep absolutely feel the same way. I helped a few people make their submissions and it was a difficult but ultimately empowering process for them. I hope these stories help the wider community to understand how prevalent violence, abuse and neglect is in disabled people's lives and how we can all work towards preventing this.

And people voting in the NT and ACT only contribute to the population majority not the state majority. Feels like we need to change our referendum rules.

The polls are not looking good. But I wonder if those polls are capturing younger people, who are harder to reach via traditional sampling methods. Also a lot of undecided and 'soft' yes / no voters still as well and these votes could determine the result. A lot of people will also tune in last minute and decide on the day.

Statistically this argument makes no sense. I'm a qualitative researcher myself so i would agree that the qualitative experiences of those 20% are important, but quantitatively they are not. Regardless, the argument still stands, we need to critically reflect on our positions within this debate. You can vote however you want, but if you are advocating for your opinion on the basis that you know what Indigenous Australians want then well frankly that's not a great position for a non-indigenous person to occupy.

I would argue that's different because these people are citing polling information not trying to represent Indigenous voices. By design, quantitative data does not represent qualitative data. If they were trying to represent qualitative experiences, then yes absolutely this applies. It's important that we all reflect on our positions in this debate, especially if we are claiming to represent the perspectives of Indigenous Australians.

If you're a white person you really shouldn't be trying to represent the views of Indigenous Australians. I don't care how you're voting, we all need to reflect on and consider whose voices we're trying to represent here.

Don't forget neo nazis who are actively supporting the no campaign. Dutton and co can try to lie and convince people that they care about making things better for Indigenous Australians all they want but there's absolutely no fucking reality where nazis give a shit about this. Not all people who vote no are racists, but all racists will vote no.
