  • "they don’t care wether nuclear is a viable option or not"

Keep voting the best and brightest people in to develop policy Australia.

  • The government at the very least should have put funding in place to support Indigenous Australians throughout this campaign. For Royal Commissions there will often be grants awarded to mental health / trauma services in order to support people through telling their stories. I think the same consideration should have taken with this campaign because it has become so predictably vile and unhinged. I imagine it's a lot for Indigenous Australians to have to process, regardless of how they're voting.

  • As a phd student I strongly advice anyone to think very carefully about doing a phd unless you already come from a wealthy position in life. In fact I would actually try to convince someone not to do a PhD. The title means fuck all outside of academia and even if it did that it not a good reason to pursue one.

  • Politics aside I would say the connotation here is that this person isn't very intelligent. I don't mean that as a statement on their intelligence but instead that Joe Rogan falls into the category of anti-intellectual, low bar entertainment. I'd consider Joe Rogan to be the equivalent of a tabloid paper but for people who listen to podcasts.

  • I grew up in a working class family and am the first person in my family to complete university. My parents put a lot of emphasis on my education because they held it up as being a way to have better career prospects than they did. They spent more than they could afford on sending me to a private school. But they didn't have the skills or education to help me with my studies so I struggled a lot compared to my peers. Being the working class kid at a school with wealthy kids who had more support and resources than I did made it difficult for me to understand why everything felt so much harder for me. Undiagnosed adhd and Autism also didn't help this. Now I'm doing a PhD and it's strange how familiar the feeling of being a first gen academic is to being the poor kid at a rich school.

  • Hotboxing a dorm room lol.

  • Ok hold up so the way I'm understanding this is that its tilt (day) is slower than it's rotation around the sun (year). Is that right or am I way off?

  • I've been on a fixed rate contract for the last 6 months - locked it in just before the price hike. It's been an absolute life saver as I'm on a very low income at the moment.

  • I think this is one of the most valid criticisms of the voice proposal. I agree it doesn't go far enough in ensuring that governments listen to the voice. This is a big part of why I was on the fence with my vote for a while.

  • I would recommend looking up the work of Nick Walker. Neuroqueer Heresies is an amazing book and addresses all of your questions.

  • For me personally the momentum of the neurodiversity movement makes me hopeful that society can change to be more inclusive and accepting of neurodivergent people. I'm also hopeful that a lot of the normative structures that have hurt so many groups of people will continue to be challenged and society becomes more accepting of all forms of diversity.

  • I've been arguing this for years! We sell that high quality black coal that keeps everyone coming back for more.

  • As someone who just submitted an article for review I am gobsmacked by how brazenly the authors have done this. The absolute disregard for integrity and the knowledge production process is astounding. But also the balls to just submit a paper like this without fear of the consequences says something more profound about the state of academia.

  • The person who was instrumental in the development of modern advertising was also involved in the notorious little Albert experiment. That really says a lot about how unethical modern advertising is on a psychological level. As a psych major myself I am constantly disgusted by how manipulative and toxic advertising is. It actually troubles me how we've essentially just accepted this as part of our society now.

  • Well Assange is fucked if they let Barnaby Joyce speak

  • I'm quite a cynical person but I'll admit it gave me goosebumps and I'm definitely feeling this vibe.

  • If you are not an Indigenous person then the voice will not really be advising on things that are relevant to you. And the voice is fundamentally an advisory group that will present their concerns to the government. The government will then act on this advice. It will still be the government making laws and policies. It just needs to be constitutional so that it can't be terminated like previous advisory groups have been.

Considering the level of disadvantage that Indigenous Australians experience, don't you think it's reasonable that they should have greater say (a voice) on how to address the issues that are relevant to them?

  • From what I understand the new CEO was the former CFO so has actively contributed to said problems.

  • I have a MSW and wish I did an MPA instead lol.
