  • I'm not in support of trying to control what people do. And I'm guessing those for it tend to be in support if they believe they won't be subjected to it themselves, but would suddenly shift if they found themselves under the same policy.

That's how it usually seems to go. Individuals thinking they are above the policy and in a special class. Believing it's others that need controlling and not themselves.

  • I think once that becomes a possibility it'll make defederation unnecessary. Especially when it comes to Meta, since that's really become the thing I've become more concerned about in the future than squabbles between currently existing instances.

  • It comes down to the heavy lifting the mods do. They are way too under appreciated back on reddit and here too. People think they can self police themselves and that other people will follow, but it's the mods who set and maintain the type of tone they want for the community. People here aren't anymore special than any other social media, so moderated communities and instances becomes important for those that arent happy with the outcomes of more lax moderation environments once they see users aren't behaving the way they'd like them to.

  • I felt like local communities were disappointing for the most part, since I'd expect it to be people talking about interesting activities or events happening where they lived. But, majority of the content seemed to be filled with break ins or murder news and complaining about how trash everything is. Occasionally some useful threads about where to find ___ in the city or what services people recommend for ___, but that seemed to be the rate exceptions. So not something you really visited or subscribed to unless I had a specific local question to ask.

  • When you block an instance on kbin does that mean users from that instance don't see your content at all when logged into that instance? That's something I've wanted in case in the future some instances federate with Meta, so I don't provide content for Meta users to see or interact with so they need to log out of Meta or sign up for another instance to view content.

  • I noticed it when going outside my subscribed feed shifted from being kind of nerdy tech and games topics to being more flooded with memes and a whole lot of politics and news. Not that there's anything wrong with those communities. It's just not what I'm interested in, and with that type of content starting to dominate and making it harder to find new communities I'm interested in I started blocking a bunch of communities again. Especially when communities like against____spam started popping up, since those spam the most content about ____.

  • Even when I've done custom roms like lineqgeOS I haven't rooted. However when it comes to backing up apps root still does feel like the best way to back up specific app data with apps like swift backup.

  • Also, this app is really nice. Being able to create guest accounts on other instances to be able to browse by local and see the communities there is fantastic.

And I like how static elements get hidden as you scroll down. And filters present for additional keywords is really awesome. Love this app.

  • Not like accounts are needed to be able to see content either, which is a plus even if the instance you use is defederated. I think it's better to just see each instance like an old school forum. Sometimes you need to make another account to access a specific forum. Sometimes not if the forum has categories you are interested in already. So it's like a way of going back to the old way of the internet where things are starting to get much more decentralized.

  • You are the one who insinuated that I am unironically the worst and that I am part of the problem. If you are going to act like you are above other people at least try to behave more cordial if it's people behaving like "dicks" that has you riled up.

And my main point of welcome to the internet wasn't some dunk. It was implying that people here aren't anymore superior or special over people on reddit. Despite what people back on reddit liked to believe and some people on lemmy now. As I said before. Key to a space having the atmosphere you desire isn't the individuals, but moderation. It's the mods holding things together more than the individuals who are just as unruly as any other userbase if not kept in check. As much as users like to believe themselves to be superior there needs to be some humbling in that area. Moving to lemmy does not make them a special group than the people who stayed back on reddit that is a group above the negatives of reddit.

As for filtering? Well I usually have blocked all news, politics, and a whole bunch of meme focused communities over the years on reddit. The default subs like pics, funny, gifs, askreddit, etc. Would you put those subs in the category of toxicity? There are others reasons people block than a community itself being toxic. I'll go out of my way to block entertainment I'm interested in just to try to reduce chances of spoilers. Filtering benefit to me isn't just for toxicity, but curation in the absence of algorithms. I can understand the confusion though if your use was only for blocking toxic communities.

  • I never said I expect lemmy to be bad as reddit. Actually I'd say my experience in reddit has been really positive until the end. I mainly used stuff like RES to block stuff I didn't have interest in which tends to clutter /r/all. Made /r/all nicer experience seeing more content I wanted that I might add to my collection of subreddits I enjoyed until the end.

Anyways, what it sounds like you want is heavier moderation, which in that case I recommend places like beehaw. Moderation is an important part of setting the atmosphere.

Weird thing is I didn't even see much over the line behavior from this discussion thread over all. Aside from some few comments throwing in unnecessary personal insults. You actually have been partaking in personal attacks despite making yourself seem above it, so check yourself on that too. But, overall it's just people disagreeing about the app which is fine. I'd say it's been cordial overall.

  • I wonder how hard it is to have the actor attempt to say the words in another language, but then dub over it so at least the mouthing looks right now it visually passes as them saying it themselves with proper pronunciation.

Performers have lipsynced after all on live stage. So extra post edits could help even further with the illusion.

  • Modding KOTOR 1 and 2. The wiki guide was incredibly helpful. Also suggestions to use mod organizer for when modding Skyrim and Fallout games. Gunpla sub was helpful in finding out the tools needed to get started to make a nice snap build. Buildapc and buildapcsales all very helpful for finding deals and also helping with putting together a PC. Gamedeals helpful for finding game deals. There was some reddit sub that was helpful in finding what foam to get for replacing old couch cushions too I came across through search results long ago.

  • I just left because I wanted to try something that wasn't run by a corporation for the intention of monetizing the user base. I didn't expect any different when it came to behavior which is why I had been hoping for RES type levels of filtering to become available as the userbase grew, since I knew it would be necessary to start curating content. Welcome to the internet.

  • Block tube extension has been great. I found that I didn't need to block that many channels to start having content show up that isn't from the big YouTube channels. For example tech and game searches heavily promote big channels and dominate the first several pages of search results, and suppress little ones. But, then block some of them, and suddenly it's more of the regular small YouTube channels over the YouTube as a business channels.
