  • Why would redditors who left reddit be different because the URL changed? People may have left for a variety of reasons, but that has little to do with their commenting or posting style. At most maybe communities of interests thst gain traction,, but that doesn't make them anymore special than the average internet user.

  • I like SeriesGuide for tracking shows and movies I watched, so I bought Series X unlock for it.

Other apps I've been happy with purchasing was swiftback up for backing up and restoring apps on rooted phones once Titanium Backup stopped getting supported.

Power Amp for listening to music.

1DM+ for downloading stuff from websites. It detects what are videos, pics, etc.

Hermit which makes lite apps. You can do that with Firefox or any browser for free, but I've liked hermit enough to get the pro version.

Got solid explorer and mixexplorer which are file managers.

Then there's some decent games like Stardew Valley you could buy.

And when you don't know what to spend it on you can donate money to some of the apps you bought, since some have in app options to send them donations.

  • It's only good until you realize how much it starts demanding identification and biometrics to properly implement. Just look at some of the laws being passed in the states in the name of protecting people. It's that type of stuff that gradually leads to pseudonym websites like reddit or lemmy to erode away into more Meta type ones that lock your account until you send them photos of your identification.

Need to look past the this sounds like a good ideology and more into what are they going to start requiring when it comes to your daily use of tech. Of course only appealing to ideologies and buying into it is what governments lean on.

  • When I first took a look it was only ads with a subscription model to remove it. Later got a $20 removal, but I don't like that it uses stuff like admob for personalized ads over just generic ads.

As for what type of monetization I prefer would be only a paid app without any ad integration at all that needs to be disabled. Or Apollo method of one single app without ads that pushes users towards the paid tier by having the free experience be very limited with one account sign in restrictions, no submissions, filter limits, etc.

Anyways, I uninstalled and moved on to other apps. It wasn't something that I found vital to use.

  • CRTs take up too much and are too heavy, and using retro consoles on modern TVs look bad and then there's all the different connections you can end up getting lost in trying to make it look better.

So I just go with emulator with crt filter. Easy and gets the job done even though it might not perfectly replicate the native experience.

  • That makes sense. Discord communities help foster more of a fan base with the increased level of interactions and live chatting people can have each other. So its probably much more personal to them whereas for us it's just another product to use or not.

  • Biggest reason is prices of phones have gone up so people are holding onto them for longer with how much more expensive future replacements will be. But, the phones outlast the security updates, which is when roms come into play.

  • Yeah, there is this feeling of a weird cult movement from them where daring to not use Sync or criticize anything about it is seen as an affront. I could understand the reaction if this was posted on the Sync community. They leap to accusations of you must not pay for anything you cheapskate as opposed to not understanding that some just don't support the current model, so don't use the product.

There's lot of products that are better than alternatives, but people choose to not use for whatever reasons. Like dare I say it...reddit still when it comes to niche communities.

  • Another thing to consider is that in the past apps could be sold separately with an ad version and an ad free version. So people could flat out avoid having an app that had any ad elements.

So there now only being an ad version, and then the initial first impression people saw was a subscription model to remove ads rubbed people the wrong way.

Either way, people can use the app or not, but it's been odd how some people have been so emotional over people choosing to not use Sync. Like one of the top comments in this thread is just someone insulting foss and people not paying for Sync.

  • That would be nice, since I burned in the comment navigation bar long time ago into my old phone from using slide for Reddit. So started setting stuff like that to hide instead of leaving it a static element.
