  • Ok but nothing I've ever experienced or witnessed has ever made sense, literally nothing ever fits any form of reason or logic - a thousand years from now if they write off all the things from our lives that make no sense or are absurd then the vision they come up with won't resemble reality at all, not one little bit.

So when someone says 'its unlikely they'd waste resources' or 'this would be totally unfeasible and require insane amounts of totally needless extra measures while providing no benefit what so ever' that just makes it feel even more likely to me, like yes of course that's what they did that's what we always do!

Sounds like an interesting video though, I'm going to watch it but I'll be thinking about aliens and trying to find cracks in the narrative where I can poke them in!

  • I'm on it about ten hours a day when I'm at home, sometimes 15. About the same amount of time I used to listen to the radio - it's great background for when I'm coding, modelling, video editing or whatever plus a great way of relaxing in-between as well as being a great learning resource.

It's great because I can choose what to watch based on the task I'm doing, background waffle about interesting but missable subjects works well for a lot of stuff. I like twitch too but at it's live I can't walk away so easily if I get absorbed into someone's stream so find YouTube much more functionally useful.

  • Yeah and there's a lot more crazy linked to right wing stuff, you've got all the Alex Jones type stuff and all the factions of q anon, the space war, the various extreme religious factions and various greek letter caste systems... Ad nausium.

If version two involves them biasing towards the right then they'll have to work out how to do that, I bet they do it an obviously dumb way which results in it being totally dumb and wacky in hilarious ways

  • I like the theories about them being ancient power stations or radio devices, using the water channels and gold cap stone to create enough pd to be useful in occult practices. It doesn't have to be aliens that helped make them but I think there's something the really resonates with the idea of aliens coming down and teaching ancient people how to make super complex and beautiful machines to synthesize small amounts of potent narcotics. Like none of the other reasons aliens would come make much sense but a tiktokable prank like that really does.

Imagine how fascinating it would be if we find loads of old alien stuff on Mars with like little model pyramids and pictures of them with the pharaoh. Or if when we meet aliens and have first contact they got us up with galactic tiktok and people are reposting all the old videos of pranks aliens have pulled on earth over the years.

Yeah they were probably just the biggest coolest looking thing that knew how to make so everyone wanted one, yeah they were probably just dragging rocks up sandy inclones and using water filled counter weights.. but we don't know aliens weren't there so I'm going to enjoy being open to that possibility.

  • I think you're selling freedom short, yeah convenience and momentum are hard to beat but Lemmy is where the open source Devs are and the first adopters, I think we're gonna go see a lot of interesting things emerge here which will draw a lot of users into trying it out - especially if all the other social media sites are closing their doors to people without accounts from viewing information.

What Lemmy needs is it's own version of place, not the same thing but things that are fun and novel and community building. The basic stuff is still getting finalized but as things get established we'll see plenty of tools made to help moderation, to enable new features and useful ways of interacting with information. Hopefully some fun games and toys too.

I've got a lot of work to do on my main project at the moment but I've also got a lot of ideas for Lemmy stuff I want to play with when I've got the time, I'm sure theres a lot of other people cooking up ideas and watching things develop and stabilize waiting for the right time.

  • No you've just got it compartmentalized in your head into happy little feel good boxes because you don't want to think about the actual complexity of reality (well fictional reality)

It's insane not because it's a bad comparison but because it makes clear the insanity in your worldview (or galactic view I guess)

  • I do think part of it is expectation creep but also that it's got better at some harder elements which aren't as noticeable - it used to invent functions which should exist but don't, I haven't seen it do that in a while but it does seem to have limited the scope it can work with. I think it's probably like how with images you can have it make great images OR strictly obey the prompt but the more you want it to do one the less it can do the other.

I've been using 3.5 to help code and it's incredibly useful for things it's good at like reminding me what a certain function call does and what my options are with it, it's got much better at that and tiny scripts like 'a python script that reads all the files in a folder and sorts the big images into a separate folder' or something like that. Getting it to handle anything with more complexity it's got worse at, it was never great at it tbh so I think maybe it's getting to s block where now it knows it can't do it so rejects the answers with critical failures (like when it makes up function of a standard library because it'd be useful) and settles on a weaker but less wrong one - a lot of the making up functions errors were easy to fix because you could just say 'pil doesn't have a function to do that can you write one'

So yeah I don't think it's really getting worse but there are tradeoffs - if only openAI lived by any of the principles they claimed when setting up and naming themselves then we'd be able to experiment and explore different usage methods for different tasks just like people do with stable diffusion. But capitalists are going to lie, cheat, and try to monopolize so we're stuck guessing.

  • Another day another puritan panic

Yes we should ban open source and consumer gfx cards and everything else to stop the possibility that someone might have a sexual thought -in fact all humans should be blinded at birth to avoid this!

Won't someone think of the children!!!!!

  • This is such a weird mentality and so bizarre that it's common within a certain set of people. You're going to hide in a darkened room refusing to interact with the world and not sharing anything because you're scared someone will make an image of you?

Oh gosh a greedy person stole my likeness because they wanted what I have! What ever will I do?!?!

Your likeness isn't special or magical, it's not going to grant people special psychic power over you or allow someone else to claim your rewards in the afterlife, it's just a picture in a sea of a billion pictures - so what?

  • Yeah but the principle of it is to let them evolve on their own, when you're already on their planet and they try to kill one of you then it's different rules.

If it wasn't then the romulans could just announce their new law makes being human illegal and Starfleet would just have to power down their shields and let them kill us all.

  • It's not that they're apple superfans that makes then like that or course, they're apple obsessed because they're fully brought into conspicuous consumerism - they love that apple is over priced and feature limited because it's a way of demonstrating their excess wealth.

Airlines are big on this with their 'show the world you're special by spending more than most people do on their whole holiday just to get a slightly bigger seat and complementary drinks that you could have brought for twenty dollars.' the same with cars that inexplicably cost the same as a house and why people need to have this year's overpriced car.

Apple not being laughed out of existence is a symptom of our broken society, and yes I know people are going to tell me that they have some obscene reason for using apple but that's just the very human trait of posthoc justification and rationalization of a choice made emotionally.

  • I had an arcos jukebox before the first iPod came out, every time they'd release a new version it's big feature would be something my jukebox had always done. Except it didn't have an awkward spinning selector wheel or celebrity endorsements.

I could connect it to the cd player and record the whole thing as mp3s, I think it even used to split the tracks automatically but I might be wrong. Plug it into usb and it's a HDD ready to have anything copied to it without hassle... No need for shitty iTunes, no complaints about wav files and never found an MP3 it couldn't play.

I remember thinking that surely people will realize over priced and feature limited products are an insult but no, the kids of the future I had so much hope for turned out to be gen z who care more about brand recognition than anyone ever before. I still think the feature rich generics will have their day, maybe generation alpha...

  • The best bit of is I don't think he even said anything? He said he didn't play GTA because it got to the bit where you have to shoot cops and he couldn't morally do it, that's super dumb but I haven't seen anything he said about the characters and no one in here is talking about it.

I think people have imagined how he probably feels and now we have to hear about that too!
