  • You know what people do in countries with lots of really hot weather? They take a siesta during the hottest part of the day because that's just smart.

  • "Collector" might be a strong word for me, but I like to buy more obscure B movies - foreign, action, horror. I have this fear that someday, in our streaming future, they will no longer available - e.g. 1978's The Manitou. I also buy mainstream movies but I don't worry, for example, that Terminator 2 will become unavailable.

  • All my Sunday school class homies join in: "♫He's got the whoooooole moon in His hands. He's got the whoooooooole moon in His hands. He's got the whoooooooole moon in His hands. He's got the whole moon in His hands.♫"

  • That's not an unusual policy for schools in the US either. But the reach of social media extends far beyond kids using their phones in class. That's part of the problem. Now you can be bullied at 10pm while lying in bed.

  • I think given enough time it could make a comeback. A few generations of people who used it to refer to the developmental disability will need to die off. Language changes and insults come and go. I'll be dead for sure, but in the meantime when something inane is happening to me I can still go back to my childhood vocab and think to myself, "This is retarded."

  • "Gay" was one I never used. "Retarded" is one I don't use any more but still admittedly find kind of funny. I spent a number of years as a kid in the 80s living in New England and for me it will always be "Re-tah-ded."

  • It's very rare I give up on a book but that's mostly because I choose books I know I'm going to at least find passable entertainment.

The one I should have given up on was "Annihilation." I hated it starting about 20% in but kept going to see if it got any better. So many people loved it! Nope, in the end I was just angry at myself for reading that boring junk.

  • I live in a small city with municipal fiber. 1 Gbps symmetrical is glorious and I would happily pay more than the $70 they're charging.

  • To win the Rublican primaries you need to be unhinged to appeal to the base. Once you're in, all the other Republican voters fall into line.

No one is really voting on issues/policy. They're trying to keep their team in and the other team out. It's depressing.

  • Also, they're pretty low commitment books. Pick one up and give it a try. They're short and after reading one you'll know whether you want to keep going.

  • I'm kind of with you. I'm playing Witcher 3 right now and it's completely locked at 30 and I'm totally happy with it. I know I could getting it running higher with decreased visuals but this consistent frame time is good enough for me.

  • I was seriously considering going to grad school for a library science degree years ago but in the end realized it was going to be tough to support a family with the pay. I think there are some higher paying library jobs but they're few and far between.

  • Sad, grim story aside, check the article out for a picture of the worlds most ripped homeless guy. The dude should be modeling swimsuits.

  • Ditto. These smaller locality subs are unlikely to take off on lemmy IMO. I think reddit would have to shut down before people would look for an alternative.
