I understand they made some code contributions (no sources to hand right now) and also made / sponsored the WPGraphQL and Advanced Custom Fields plugins. The first, Automattic poached the developer; the second, Automattic rebranded it and removed any mention of WPE.
Not saying that WPE is beyond reproach; just not sure it's 100% accurate to say they didn't contribute anything back at all
Oh, absolutely! But I do feel you're trading a level of convenience for the privilege (and what a privilege!) - even something as simple as pirating one movie is already a much bigger hurdle than getting a Netflix subscription, for instance. Let alone setting up a Jellyfin server, backups, getting external connections / reverse proxying going, and so on.
This is, unfortunately, the market. For many IPs, the only collectable that exists is the Funko Pop. So, it's either one of those, or no memorabilia at all. (Personally, the latter is far preferable, but folks like their doodads.)
