How is it democratic though? There is some policy deliberation yes but that’s not what democracy means.

I guess it’s not technically renewable but the reservoir of geothermal energy is so vast it’s hard to see how it could be used up and it has minimal environmental impacts.

Great video. The reality is the world is polluted and if we don’t like it then we need to stop polluting, not hide in a bubble and pretend the contamination won’t reach us there. We are a part of nature and when we poison nature we poison ourselves.

I am upset about it but what else can we do? I think looking to follow the lead of those who have been working on this issue for longer is the right place to start at least. Maybe we will need to go further but first we need to connect offline.

Gonna be tough to stop the creation of the camp since it’s in Cuba but there are orgs that are rolling out strategies to protect people in their communities from getting caught up in this. Check out your local orgs and see who is working on this and cooperate with them.

Menendez has been openly and obviously corrupt for almost my entire life this goes back way before Biden. Also, the FBI is supposed to be independent so while I guess as usual they did the bare minimum of not interfering I think they should have forced him out of office long before this.

It means they’re no longer ordering federal agencies to freeze funds. Are you suggesting the freeze is being enacted through some other mechanism? And if so what?

This is a related but distinct phenomenon. What you’re missing is that while change from turnover is inevitable, it doesn’t have to be a bad change. However private ownership (or other types of top down organizational methods) and profit seeking is what drives this change in a specifically negative direction.

If the right incentive structure was in place, it could just as easily be that turnover leads to evolution in a positive direction. But our current corporate structures mean the political dominance by leadership and delivering shareholder value trump all other considerations, including ethics.

These problems are not unique to legacy outlets like NYT. New media outlets are also mostly failing in their duties to do proper journalism and provide a public service. The exact manifestation differs slightly because their medium tends to differ slightly. But they still have the same toxic incentives.

This is just nonsense for the base to make it look like they aren’t chaotic losers. Press secretary statements don’t have any legal significance.

My understanding is that federal funding is still going out, though they’ll probably come back with more specific restrictions based on some of the executive orders once they have time to get a bit more organized.

The memo and the executive orders are distinct. They’re both problems but in different ways.

The funding freeze was set to cause absolute financial calamity so it’s good that it was rescinded. It’s bad that the executive orders are still in place though some have already been blocked.

Are you saying from the perspective of Trump voters or republican leaders? I think the goals between them are quite different.

Leaders always have different incentives and therefore goals from their followers and the American people really need to wake up to this fact.

It is good yes. The pushback was effective but they’ll try this again in a different form soon enough I think.

It’s totally possible to be well-informed from news on social media but it requires effort and a high degree of media literacy, which the vast majority of people don’t have.
