  • Openly Marxist is just the start of it. Dude is utterly unhinged, so his theories don’t mean a lot to me unless they’re backed by evidence.

  • Gonna be tough to stop the creation of the camp since it’s in Cuba but there are orgs that are rolling out strategies to protect people in their communities from getting caught up in this. Check out your local orgs and see who is working on this and cooperate with them.

Internet search for ICE watch and your city or region would be a good place to start. And I know people hate Reddit but a lot of people on my local sub are talking about this too.

  • Menendez has been openly and obviously corrupt for almost my entire life this goes back way before Biden. Also, the FBI is supposed to be independent so while I guess as usual they did the bare minimum of not interfering I think they should have forced him out of office long before this.

  • Yeah but this fucker had been known to be corrupt for years and no one did shit about it.

  • It means they’re no longer ordering federal agencies to freeze funds. Are you suggesting the freeze is being enacted through some other mechanism? And if so what?

  • This is a related but distinct phenomenon. What you’re missing is that while change from turnover is inevitable, it doesn’t have to be a bad change. However private ownership (or other types of top down organizational methods) and profit seeking is what drives this change in a specifically negative direction.

If the right incentive structure was in place, it could just as easily be that turnover leads to evolution in a positive direction. But our current corporate structures mean the political dominance by leadership and delivering shareholder value trump all other considerations, including ethics.

These problems are not unique to legacy outlets like NYT. New media outlets are also mostly failing in their duties to do proper journalism and provide a public service. The exact manifestation differs slightly because their medium tends to differ slightly. But they still have the same toxic incentives.

  • This is just nonsense for the base to make it look like they aren’t chaotic losers. Press secretary statements don’t have any legal significance.

My understanding is that federal funding is still going out, though they’ll probably come back with more specific restrictions based on some of the executive orders once they have time to get a bit more organized.

  • The memo and the executive orders are distinct. They’re both problems but in different ways.

The funding freeze was set to cause absolute financial calamity so it’s good that it was rescinded. It’s bad that the executive orders are still in place though some have already been blocked.

  • I’m so sick of the pointless infighting. Now is not the time.

  • Are you saying from the perspective of Trump voters or republican leaders? I think the goals between them are quite different.

Leaders always have different incentives and therefore goals from their followers and the American people really need to wake up to this fact.

  • It is good yes. The pushback was effective but they’ll try this again in a different form soon enough I think.

  • It’s totally possible to be well-informed from news on social media but it requires effort and a high degree of media literacy, which the vast majority of people don’t have.

  • The capitalist model is failing the journalism industry. Is there a way to build a mutual aid network for good journalism?

  • Pretty big deal to see Krugman leave. He was a prominent voice there and a major sign of decline of a once solid paper.

  • Gotcha I realize I was kind of emotionally riffing there and didn’t really address what you were saying. Thanks for sharing the new link and correction.

This whole thing has made me pretty scared and angry to be honest.

  • In the past there was a lot of bluster that went nowhere. It’s early but term two may be different.

  • You’re right but I guess part of me was holding out hope that he wouldn’t go through with it all. Naive.

  • Every tyrant everywhere and across all of history needs at minimum the acquiescence of his subjects. If we’re going to resist this we need to wake people from this idea that’s been drilled into us that voting is the only way to change politics. It’s not and never has been.

  • Maybe. That is my main hope currently that the courts will at least pause this until it can be sorted out. But what then? Will the Supreme Court actually stand up to Trump even if this is clearly illegal? What if Trump just orders his flunkies to ignore the court orders? This is what I mean—we need to be ready for these possibilities.

I agree that supporting legal fights is a good idea but we need a diversity of strategies here. Mobilize on the streets. Contact congress, especially republicans and point out how this harms their constituents. Support federal employees in organized resistance against this takeover. And be ready to take more disruptive actions if they become necessary.

I am also afraid that many republican voters are too deep in the groupthink to see out of this. Trump can just make up some reason, no matter how flimsy or absurd that their problems are caused by the left and most will believe him. So I am not depending on them to save us, though we should be ready to work with any who will fight with us.

But ultimately I think the time of waiting for someone else to save us is over. It’s each of us or it’s no one.

  • I think people are underestimating the seriousness of this action. He is effectively turning the civil service into his personal servants. Does congress even have a say in government anymore if this is allowed? Do the courts?

If Trump can effectively order government employees to do anything under threat of firing or worse, then is our situation meaningfully different from autocracy? This is an absolute emergency and I think people are not seeing the bigger picture here.

We need a plan to fight back against this, and I want to ask everyone to participate in whatever capacity they can. And please don’t give me any “ThE pLaN wAs VoTiNg” replies. We lost the election and we need to move on from this learned helplessness and figure out what comes next. We don’t have time to wait until the next election to fix this.
