  • Pretending Israel's problems, and the problem that is Israel in its current form, can be solved by new elections is no effort at all. It's the Democrats' comfort blanket. Everything will be fine if only the right people are in charge. Look away, no structural problems to see here.

  • @Dasus@lemmy.world has already given you a good answer.

But just ask your friend if he would (all else being equal) prefer to buy from a co-op where all the workers get a living wage and a fair share of the profits.

No profits siphoned off by idle shareholders, who don't spend it locally and more likely than not route it via a tax haven to eliminate all the benefits to any economy, least of all the local economy. Because they will use the money they don't need to buy up all the stuff the rest of us do need, so they can charge us extortionate amounts for access to basic means of survival (while refusing to pay a living wage for the labour that produces their profits).

Now ask him why it is almost always impossible to find a co-op alternative, even if you're willing to do a lot of (unpaid) work researching the options.

He'll never get anywhere if he starts from the position that things are the way they are because the broad mass of people want them to be that way. That's not how it works.

  • CITES is the international treaty.

The offspring of wild animals are still very wild, even when crossbred with a domesticated breed. If they wanted to do it, they needed to get a licence to do it. That they did not get a licence suggests they knew they would not be granted one. Because breeding fancy animals for rich people to shoot is not a good justification.

  • It’s not a numbers thing, it’s a facts thing. That’s just how criminal justice works (or is supposed to).

That is not how criminal justice is supposed to work. Scottish law has attempted to make it work a little bit like that but it's not a good solution.

There is no mirror image. A guilty verdict is (supposed to be) beyond reasonable doubt. A not guilty verdict is everything else. You're ignoring the missing middle and deciding that it has been shown beyond reasonable doubt that 16 young men have all told the same lie about a powerful person for

    <reasons>

    .

You're entitled to whatever opinion you want to have about Spacey. But if your opinion is based on the idea that a not guilty verdict means innocent beyond reasonable doubt, then your opinion is based on a total misunderstanding of the way the legal system works.

  • No, I was responding to your perfectly correct comment about the way we learn language, which is as little kids gradually working out the rules from exposure, not by being taught them.

We pick up on how language is used, not why it is used like that.

And that is exactly why some people with a condition like autism or epilepsy find attempts to rehumanise the language used to refer to them patronising or unhelpful. In my examples, "an epileptic" would be the dehumanising nounisation. And because of those attempts to rehumanise the language, people sometimes avoid the adjective too (in exactly the same way it's happened with woman/female).

  • but if you hit a girl when I was in 6th grade, you were an instant social pariah. Everyone would beat your ass.

And this is why male violence against women is non-existent, children.

There is a whole world out there to pay attention to and you've taken the performative utterances of tweenage boys desperately trying to become men as evidence to deny everything else. WTF?

FWIW, the ones who were shouting the loudest are absolutely the most likely to be dominating, coercing, and hitting their female partners now. They're performing masculinity because they don't know what it is and that terrifies them.

And because the world is dominated by these frightened little boys, we punish girls and women for the violence of men and boys. This story is not an outlier, it is the fucking story.

  • This is absolute bullshit and you haven't even read the fucking article. The nuns did not exclusively abuse boys any more than the priests exclusively abused girls. And no, boys are not more likely to welcome their abuse. Fuck the fuck off with this toxic nonsense.

You cannot derive reality from inside your own head. Read more, spout less bullshit.

  • A jury being unable to be sure of guilt beyond reasonable doubt does not mean he is innocent beyond all reasonable doubt.

How many people do you need to come forward before you believe them? Is the number of men required more or less than the number of women required? Do teenagers count double or not at all? Or does the number depend entirely on the quality of their legal defence and the amount of physical evidence they left behind?

  • Imposter Syndrome is just the flipside of Dunning-Kruger. You must not let it paralyse you but you should know that it is a good thing. You can't get better unless you believe there is room to get better. And there always is room to get better, so you've been on the right track from the getgo.

  • Of course. But understanding why calling women "females" is a big red flag is not about your intuitive grasp of the language. We dehumanise people by nounising their adjectives all the time. Are you epileptic, or an epileptic, or just a person with epilepsy?

It's harder to explain to someone with a poor grasp of English grammar, that's all. People who are fluent or near fluent because they grew up hearing and speaking a language will often struggle to explain something like this. People who had to learn the grammar consciously probably would not.

Only biologists and coppers need to use "female" as a noun. Everyone else can speak proper, like.

  • Honestly, anyone who can speak a second language has a better grasp of what a noun and an adjective are than yer average English speaker. They're just at risk of picking up colloquialisms from the manosphere, if they hang around in the wrong kinds of places.

  • Maybe you could direct your righteous anger at the people misselling the app, not the people who use it to help them get pregnant or to avoid becoming pregnant in a proto-fascist society that has removed their right to an abortion?
