  • Why Are We Still Sending People to Jail for Being Poor? It's Time to Truly Abolish Debtors' Prisons

After she pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor of “frequenting a place where controlled substances were used, sold, or manufactured,” an Idaho court imposed a bill of $683.50 in fines and fees. Her lawyer—who had been appointed by the court because Beck couldn’t afford to hire one—asked that the costs be waived or reduced, given Beck’s tough financial circumstances. The judge refused. When Beck failed to make payments, the court issued a warrant for her arrest. She spent seven days in jail waiting to see the judge. Charged with a new crime of “contempt” for not paying, the judge sentenced Beck to time served in jail, again ordered her to pay costs, and reminded her that if she didn’t, she would continue to face new arrests, detentions, and contempt convictions.

  • Southern blot is a neat full circle:

The method is named after the British biologist Edwin Southern, who first published it in 1975.[3] Other blotting methods (i.e., western blot,[4] northern blot, eastern blot, southwestern blot) that employ similar principles, but using RNA or protein, have later been named for compass directions as a sort of pun from Southern's name.

  • Like I said, the evidence-base is near non-existent. But you can't look at decisions foisted on us almost exclusively by sales types and assume that means it works because they know what they're doing.

it can also be explained with the firm having poorly evaluated what their target audience was

It was a tech conference attended almost exclusively by men.

I wish I could find the article now. But (some of) what he said was that the models attracted sleaze balls who were there to have a jolly, not to do business. Stall busy, order book empty. And that the local grandmothers did so well because they could recommend local restaurants and leisure activities and did not make the company look like it only wanted to do business with sleaze balls. Stall busy, order book full.

He also said that it was the sales men (specifically, men) who demanded they employ models because they wanted to spend all day hanging out with models being sleaze balls, not because there was any evidence that it improved business (hence, the test).

  • That is the assumption. But that does not mean it is true.

I posted an example of the tyre company before. The other example I can't find is the blog by a guy who rented two stalls at either end of the same conference, staffed one with models and the other with local grandmothers. The grandmothers did much more business. It's the salesmen who want the stall staffed with models, not the customers.

The evidence-base of sales & marketing is dismal to non-existent.

  • When I was born, married women were barred from most white collar jobs and women did not have the right to their own bank accounts, decades before rape within marriage was formally recognised as a crime.

If you are old enough to remember this era, you should realise that singling out these behaviours as somehow "Muslim" is bizarre.

I appreciate that that might not have been your intent (although it is certainly the subtext of this thread).

  • Wise to hire an automatic, I think. Not difficult with so many rentals offering hybrids or electric now. My right hand would struggle with gear shifts and I'd imagine it is even harder switching the other way around (if you are right-handed).

Getting used to driving on the 'wrong' side isn't too hard but understanding unfamiliar road signs at the same time might be quite taxing. Remember to read up on the local road laws, and whatever their equivalent of the Highway Code is.

  • because everyone regardless of gender and age are biologically conditioned to look at them.

Sorry but this is bullshit. Images of women dominate social media because men with power (and money) tend to like looking at them. I may not be socially conditioned to treat men as objects but the lack of choice this society affords me does not somehow mean I have the same visual preferences as the men who dictate my world.

  • You know that money isn't dug out of the ground, right? There's no gold standard any more. The number of exchange tokens is irrelevant when you're being extorted (most obviously on housing costs).

That’s true. To be clear, I’m not saying poverty is necessary. I’m saying it’s not because of the super rich (at least in the West). Nor am I saying the super-rich are useful.

If there is enough to go around, then your money-based maths must be incorrect. You're contradicting yourself. Which is it?

  • It's a bit more complicated than just adding up all the money and dividing it by the number of people.

Rich people don't spend their money, they use it to outbid each other for control of existing assets that the rest of us need and have no choice but to pay them for. Instead of spending that money on things that other people get paid to make (the "trickle down" lie), they use it to extort us for access to things we need to survive.

There is plenty enough in this world to go around. That so many have so little is nothing to do with the amount of arbitrary exchange tokens that exist.
