That was basically my first foray into Lemmy too. Angry mobs of activists doing everything they can to ensure Lemmy never becomes popular. Then my Lemmy.ml account got temporarily banned for claiming the Xinjiang genocide is real. They don’t like criticism of China on Lemmy.ml.
The premise is so simple and endlessly flexible. They explore ALL the sci-fi tropes (some I’m sure they created). Great actors and characters. I always had a soft spot for Richard Dean Anderson.
Fastmail and Proton. Don’t shoot me but iCloud is actually a good option if you’re already in the Apple ecosystem. Personalised domains are included if you’re paying for any iCloud tier, even the very cheap one. That will support personal email domains for the whole family. For families I think it’s the best value. iCloud also includes other things like cloud storage/backup, “hide my email,” and private relay.
He started saying some very weird things in the media, then stopped acting entirely and dropped off the map. Occasionally people would reach out to him to see how he’s doing and what he’s working on. Here is one interview William Shatner tried. It’s bizarre, but I can only find a small clip now. Avery kept answering in songs and riddles, as though mocking Shatner.
DS9 is excellent TV. Battlestar Galactica is up there too. I had similar feelings when I finished the series. Voyager is also very good. If you like sci-fi, Stargate is also seriously good.
It’s sad to see what happened to Avery Brooks. He’s totally off the deep end. He wouldn’t (or couldn’t) appear on the DS9 reunion movie, What We Left Behind.
I don’t think they’d ever ban users, but this game of cat and mouse will continue forever. They’ll make the service worse and worse, while alternatives like Rumble and Odysee will get more and more users.
That said, back up all your Google data, and migrate to your own email domain. Millions of people all over the world lose access to their Google accounts each year for any and no reason at all. All it takes is a capricious algorithm. They don’t have any customer support at all.
It took me a couple of years to migrate away from Gmail but it was completely worth it. People lose their Google accounts for any and no reason at all. People don’t realise how many important accounts would be lost without access to their email. Now, with my own domain, I can move hosts at any moment.
I’m not claiming it doesn’t have Newsmax on it. I’m claiming the service is solid. If you subscribe to people you care about (and you can find creators you like) it’s a good platform alternative. I’m the first to argue we need more YouTube creators to cross-post.
I am VERY close to giving up Premium. In-content sponsorship is becoming so bad I can’t watch it without SponsorBlock. Since I need third party apps to achieve a reasonable experience anyway, I’m not really sure what I’m paying for. Once the EU forces Apple to allow installing apps outside the App Store, I might cancel.
I use it less. I find the user-base a) very hostile to diverse opinions and experiences, b) very American-centric, and c) very leftwing and authoritarian.
I also have difficulty with discoverability. If I can’t find good communities, I can’t interact with them.
I agree. On Lemmy, saying the wrong thing on the wrong community is like stepping on a landmine. The ideological differences are wild. Maybe I just need to get used to this and block the worse communities. It certainly feels very hostile. Especially from leftwing users and communities.
They get away with this because people don’t use the alternatives. Odysee and Rumble are actually good alternatives. No, they’re not as good as YouTube, but they’re good enough. We just need creators to also upload to those platforms. Since YouTube keeps banning and demobilising them, this problem might solve itself.
The Jerusalem Post can now confirm based on verified photos of the bodies that the reports of babies being burnt and decapitated in Hamas's assault on Kfar Aza are correct.
The photos were shown to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his visit to Israel by the Public Diplomacy Directorate in the Prime Minister's Office.
It happened. Are you willing to amend your position now?
That's great for you. Sadly it's not everyone's experience. I've broken plenty of things with updates, and I'm not even a heavy Linux user. you'll find millions of Linux users making arguments like that I described above, blaming users for updates, all over the internet.
Sure they do. They can move away from the terrorists and allow Israel to kill them. Most of Gaza is farmland. There are lots of places to go where there aren't terrorists.
Yeah it was the dev I was arguing with: Dessalines.
