  • That's good, and I can relate to your experience growing up respecting firearms, but children should simply not be trusted to have access.

There have been many experiments in which children find a weapon and the parents who claimed their children knew better were horrified to see them handle the staged weapon.

Children simply don't have the logical portion of the brain developed. Even in teenagers, their amygdala (emotionality, anger, fear response) is nearly fully developed, yet their prefrontal cortext (executive control, rational thinking, emotional regulation, thinking of future consequences) is still severely underdeveloped. [1]

In fact, the prefrontal cortext isn't fully developed until our mid 20s, and possibly a few years longer for those of us with ADHD. [2] This is why teenagers display heightened risk-taking, are bad at controlling their emotions, restraining themselves, and thinking about the consequences of their actions.

Under supervision is one thing, but unsupervised access to a firearm is a patently bad idea. With that said, I did have access to a firearm (.22) and I acted responsibly as a minor (only used it for target practice). But I absolutely should not have had access to it.

  • You're loosely describing most of human history.

To play devils advocate, you're arguing an appeal to tradition, which is a logical fallacy.

Just because we've historically operated in a certain way, it does not mean it is morally permissible behavior.

The appeal to tradition has been used to argue in favor of slavery, racism, and a lot of other horrendous human behavior.

  • Man I've seen so many other ridiculous things over the years. One was a guy reading a damn paperback book while driving down a busy highway. He was holding it up head level with his head tilted back like he was reading thru bifocals.

I've seen so many idiots texting and driving, stuffing their faces with hands full of food, doing makeup, drinking and driving...

Then with Teslas, there's notorious examples of people putting trust in self-driving while they watch movies, play games, jerk off, or have sex.

It sounds like you're just lacking life experience on the road and oblivious to irresponsible 'self-driving' car owners.

  • This bullshit just boggles my mind... what is their motivation?? I luckily haven't ever encountered this.

I thought lemmy.world was being targeted specifically a few months back, but it sounds like this asshole is doing it indiscriminately? I always suspected the attack on .world was from the exploding heads jackasses, because that attack started right after the instance defederated from them.

  • Halfway thru high school, I remember accessing MySpace on my original iPhone on safari before the appstore even existed. I felt like hot shit.

I'm so glad social media was still new enough that I didn't document my awkward dumbass development. I can proudly state that I never made a FB account.

  • I'm not discounting my bias; I'm acknowledging the bias exists, but that it's far more aligned with reality and objectivity than the mainstream right, which complain about the leftist bias of lemmy.

And your Isreal example is totally out of touch. The vast majority of discussion on lemmy condemns both the terrorism of Hamas as well as the genocide being committed by Isreal.

  • I personally didn't think he had a chance to be elected.. I thought Hillary was going to win and didn't want to cast a vote for her because I disliked her as a candidate. But I would definitely go back vote for her if I could.

  • It was because of their defederation status for Threads as well as the tankie instances. I was originally on lemmy.world, but switched to feddit.de because of .world's Threads federation.

Feddit.de was the only instance I could find defederated from Threads and the tankies.

  • I think they were mostly reasonable, with some complaints like how they banned piracy communities for a while and also banned/removed a community about magic mushrooms.

I disagreed with their federating with Threads, so I hopped over onto feddit.de because they are defederated from Threads and tankie instances. That's the beauty of the fediverse tho.

But you can view the de/federated instances lists for every instance and see if you agree with it. Different apps may have different routes/capability, so I'd recommend opening it in a browser and scrolling to the bottom of the page to find the link: "instances"

To make it easier for you, here's the instances list for lemmy.world.

  • If you look at the conservative community, all their posts are downvoted (at least every time I've peeked at it). Same with the Joe Rogan community.

They don't have respite in their own communities on lemmy, due to users browsing all and downvoting their posts.

Maybe on specific instances that cater towards propoganda and extremism, but not on the Fediverse itself.
