  • The idea that fish do not experience pain is also ludicrous... They possess a central nervous system and can very much feel pain.

I'm also opposed to catch & release fishing for fun/sport for this reason.

Imagine a hyper-advanced species suddenly and painfully yanked you up into different atmospheric conditions where you're desperately unable to breathe.

Is it perfectly acceptable just because they put you back down in your natural environment before you died, with a new painful wound and traumatic experience?

    I certainly don't think so...

  • I don't disagree with you that it's the product of racism and discrimination. But the terror attacks also fuel that hate.

I can say the same thing about the consequences of my (US) country's actions in the 'war on terror.' We're the greatest contributing factor to the formation of ISIS. The casualties of our drone strikes alone (from Bush, Obama, and trump) were vastly civilian targets.

Whether it's politically/religiously motivated drone strikes on civilians, bombs in subways, or knife attacks, those actions spawn further fear, hate, intolerance, and extremism.

Even though Italy is enacting racist policies/systems, they are able to gather support for/'justify' their actions due largely to the terror attacks throughout Europe.

  • I think it just might have to do with the history of Islamic terror attacks..

Such as the London bombings and bridge attack, Charlie Hebdo attack and the more recent stabbings in France, the Madrid train bombings which killed 193 people, the November 2015 Paris attack in which 130 were murdered, the 2016 Atatürk Airport attack in Turkey which left 45 dead, the 2016 Brussels bombings, just to name a few...

I'm not suggesting that all or even most Islamic individuals are dangerous/terrorists. But there is a long, bloody history of Islamic extremism throughout Europe.

I'm also not suggesting this justifies these bans in Italy whatsoever. I share this because it's essential context to answer your question.

  • Kind of a sad case in which better social support and community mental health programs may have resulted in a different life for this guy.

I don't think this guy had any malice. Some might argue that his statements to police were just excuses, but his behavior was bizarre enough to make me think this was a guy who was in need of food, shelter, and help; not incarceration. But the DOC is the largest mental health provider in the US....

It makes me think of my former clients/population I worked with. I hope this guy gets the help he needs. The world and the people in it aren't black and white; we all live in the grey. I worked with criminals I'd consider better people than many "upstanding citizens."

  • I have struggled with long covid and it's interaction with my hypermobility EDS for a little over a year now. Derailed my entire life...

Lost my job, strained my marriage so bad and caused my wife (who just doesn't understand) to resent me...

I'm finally getting my life back on track. I am finally going to graduate school, and I am very close to working an in-person job again.

I still am not back to my old self, and I'm not sure I ever will be. Not just with the chronic fatigue and stuff, but my brain function/thinking still doesn't feel normal...

I don't even know how to describe long covid or where to begin. I was someone who never got sick. I was so close to dying for so long. I'm convinced I wouldn't have survived if I wasn't fully vaxxed. For a long time, I wished I hadn't survived.

I'm sorry you're having to move back with family. I hope you start to notice positive change, even if it's so incremental it's almost imperceptible. It was an unbelievably slow change for me, but it eventually became more exponential.

  • It's all good! Gives me some peace of mind knowing what I'm capable of in an emergency.

I got really lucky with my eye.. another inch and I may have lost it. I'm honestly kind of disappointed that I didn't get a badass scar from that one.. haha. It's pretty light/hard to see.

  • You're so sickeningly wrong.... Serious mental illness does not have the connection to violence you're claiming. I wrote this article on my blog specifically to combat the harmful stigmatizing misinformation like you are claiming here. (I have ads turned off and don't benefit in any way.)

An excerpt from my blog post:

Only 3-5% of violent acts can be attributed to those with SMI [20], co-occurring substance use plays the most pivotal role in violence [24], many psychosocial contextual factors influence violent acts [11], and while individuals with SMI are potentially 2.1% more likely than those without a mental illness to be violent [4], they are 10 times more likely to be victims of violence themselves. [20]

    The References

The following is an excerpt on the Far-Right violent extremism (such as this case) from another one of my blog posts

Radicalization happens when an individual experiences destabilization thru various environmental factors (e.g., job loss, interpersonal hardship, isolation), experiences extremist rhetoric, and the extremism is then reinforced by members of the individual’s group/community. [24]

Radicalization spreads through a complex social contagion effect, in which it requires multiple exposures before the individual adopts the extreme belief(s), and this concept has been documented in political movements in a broad application. [24] Political propaganda utilizes a similar approach as well.

Group membership and social media usage are catalysts that enhance the spread of radical beliefs. [24] However, evidence suggests that despite encountering the misinformation online, there are still geographical factors that suggest local organizing plays an important role in the development of Far-Right extremist groups. [24]

3 Key Ingredients for Radicalization: [10]

    1. Identity Fusion: allegiance to a social group is prioritized above one’s own well-being and identity.

    2. Obsessive Passions: one compulsively and relentlessly pursues a passion to the point of dysfunction, marked by loss of self-control and inability to cease activity that causes harm, guilt, shame, or burn-out. [14]

    3. Past Incarceration

Another critical factor in one’s susceptibility to radicalization, as concisely stated by Psychology Today, is that: “people who had been threatened, dehumanized, and perceived that they were discriminated against were more likely to become radicalized.” [10] This statement is key in examining the political extremism that has permeated our country, as the movements promoting radicalization prey on people by exploiting these very components.

In a study evaluating Left-Wing and Right-Wing domestic extremism between 1994 and 2020, there was one fatality as the result of Left-Wing extremism, versus 329 fatalities resulting from Far Right extremism in that 25 year period. [5]

The Far-Right movement is the oldest and most deadly form of domestic terrorism in the United States, and The Anti-Defamation League Center on Extremism found that the Far-Right is responsible for 98% of extremist murders in the U.S. [24] Furthermore, for nearly every year since 2011, Far-Right terrorist attacks/plots have accounted for over half of all terror attacks/plots in the United States. [21]

In the U.S., Right-Wing extremism was responsible for two-thirds of all failed, foiled, or successful terror attacks in 2019, and was responsible for 90% of attacks in the first half of 2020 alone. [21] Since 2013, Far-Right extremism has been responsible for more terror attacks/plots than the Left-Wing, ethnonationalism, or religiously motivated attacks/plots. [21]

    For the references

  • I took on a big stray that looked like a German Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix that attacked my dog last year. He had my dog by the throat and my dog bit his lip.

I had never seen dogs raise up, locked together like these two did. They were on their hind legs locked by the flesh in each other's mouths.

I ran in like a cave man to intervene, fully expecting to get bit up. I tried to pry this dog's mouth open with my bare hands, but all my might wasn't enough and he crushed into my hands/fingers. I could hear the sound of what I can best describe as crunching sounds and chomping gristle.

That got my flight/fight fully kicked in, and then I pried his mouth open like it was nothing. I held him suspended by his open mouth and comanded my dog to release his lip, which he did.

I then sort of suplexed and wrestled the dog until mine was able to get to safety. My crimson red blood all over this snow white dog was so surreal.

Here are some photos of my injuries. My finger was fractured and I have scar tissue in that finger and on my tendons in my left hand, which causes some trouble. Could've been a lot worse. My right middle finger still causes me a bit of pain, but I can push thru it to play piano/video games/type. No regrets. I love my dogs more than myself and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

  • I disagree. It was clearly an appeal to tradition, given his specific reference to human history (traditional human hunting behavior). But the appeal to nature is also a logical fallacy anyway.

I'm not even condemning hunting, btw. It's necessary in some cases for healthy animal populations.

  • It's patently obvious that millions of people go hunting every year without turning into mass murderers.

    I never said they do.

Pointing out logical fallacies isn't an argument.

I wasn't staking any claims in this argument. Just pointing out how yours is invalid.

I did so because it's constructive criticism to promote better reasoning. But of course you're too immature to receive constructive criticism, so you defensively deflect it instead.

Edit: oh wait you're not even the user I was speaking to..
