  • Huh, did a look around and I'm kind of surprised to find that there isn't even a very active Elder Scrolls community (at least that's federated with world) given the popularity of the series.

For the time being you may want to try asking in general games/video games communities that allow for it, e.g. !games@lemmy.world, as it looks to allow for non-news posts & no rule against posts about specific games. Also for anyone curious, a few of the existing Elder Scrolls communities may be found here:

    !elderscrolls@lemmy.ml
    !elderscrolls@lemm.ee
    !tes@lemmy.world

As OP noted though, none of these are terribly active at the moment.

  • Tbh having a set amount of work hours across jobs comes across as unwise. Each job is going to have different sorts of demands and the length of work sessions & number of breaks should be adjusted accordingly for each.

For some jobs a longer work session with sufficient breaks may prove better, whereas other jobs, absolutely not, it becomes performative rather than productive.

  • You might try asking Mackie about this. Not sure if they're still active or maybe lurking, but they literally have a lil' community for old uranium glass products which may mean they have just the sort of insight you're after.

  • Why would you reject free money?

Because it's as likely to be worthless as worth anything at all? One of the many problems with cryptocurrency is its volatile valuation...Which is a knock-on result of its failure to function as a currency at all for the most part. It's a lot less like free money and more like free arcade tokens to an arcade that's as likely to be shut down for health & safety as it is to have any functioning machines at all.

  • My thinking was mainly that due to the values being volatile and the trend of people being encouraged to treat it as an investment instead of currency that it just wouldn't see many donations anyway. On the rare occasion someone may have donated, it may be such a minimal amount that it may not even result in much of anything after whatever processing fees may be involved.

At least with more widely used currencies there's the accepted use of them primarily as currencies and there may be fewer conversions/processing fees involved (albeit this may vary & I suppose this may be where crypto finds its space).

  • When I'm in a better mindset this is how I tend to approach the internet tbh. It's when I'm in more of a mixed or meh mindset that I find myself just kind of aimlessly browsing, which I'd imagine may be similar for others as well.

  • You're good, that was sort of a variation on how I considered phrasing the question. Another form of the question in my head was something like, "How do you relate to others when your interests tend to be niche" or something in that vein, because your advice is solid for an avid pop culture fan, but it only kinda gets to the other side of this with asking about others' interests and having other interests beyond following media.

Part of the reason I asked this was less to do with my interests only revolving around pop culture & following media, and more to do with so many others' interests seeming to do so, or at least that being the way some have tried to relate to me.

  • In case anyone else doesn't keep track of Android versions by the fun nicknames, here's a Wikipedia page for the versions with numbers included. KitKat was version 4.4 of Android.

Honestly couldn't remember which numbered version this was & couldn't imagine I was alone in that, lol

  • You may want to cross-post this to !lemmy@lemmy.ml instead, as that's where Lemmy-as-software discussions/requests are more appropriate. It'd be a nice feature for sure though, and the current "Hide read posts" option is just a bit too overkill to suggest as a workaround for you for now, I think.

  • I've been kind of back & forth on posts like this, but I think we're now at a point where there are other established communities better suited to topics like this.

If you want to discuss other instances' decisions/behavior, I'm going to begin directing posts to either one of the many fediverse communities, e.g. !fediverse@lemmy.world or similar, or one of several lemmy/fediverse drama communities, e.g. !lemmydrama@lemmy.world or !fediverselore@lemmy.ca. Discussions like this are better suited to those communities as this community is not really intended for venting nor discussion of fediverse decisions/activity (or "drama" as it may be viewed).

Lastly, for discussions specific to Lemmy.World decisions & moderation I'd recommend !support@lemmy.world. I hope this helps to clarify matters, and apologize for the ambiguity up to now, but honestly just hadn't come to a decision until now.

If you would like to continue this conversation, I'd recommend cross-posting the thread to one of those aforementioned communities (or whichever other ones you find that feel appropriate). Thanks!

  • Whenever I’ve talked to people about Mastodon outside of the tech-savvy spaces, most people just see Mastodon as an app and there are “people on Mastodon”, attempting to try and introduce people to all these different platforms and how you can still talk to everyone in places unfortunately just makes their head explode, as they’re not used to the open web due to how it evolved after the rise of Facebook.

Yeah, I tend to agree with the rest of your post, and I'm highlighting this part because I feel it's probably one of the biggest missteps so many of the federated platforms have made. It helps to have a couple sort of "demo" instances to help folks understand how it works, but the flagship model that many have taken (e.g. Mastodon.social, Lemmy.ml (at least at first), Pixelfed.social, Calckey/Firefish.social, etc.) has had the unintended effect of somewhat obfuscating the basic distinctive features of the platforms, i.e. distribution/decentralization & federation.

It's apparent no one has cracked this problem yet, otherwise we wouldn't have this repeated "misstep" across the platforms, and in this regard I'm no different in terms of not having much of any better ideas. Imo to an extent each of these platforms is in a similar situation to Mastodon in terms of being between a rock & a hard place, but Mastodon definitely moreso than the others simply due to its popularity.

  • A good and interesting read, and a good reminder of some of the awkward bumps those using federated platforms for awhile may take for granted when trying to invite others to join in.

Tbh some of those bumps that are specific to Mastodon (e.g. text search/Content Warning culture/quote posts) make me think it may be better to direct folks to instances run on different backends without some of those friction points (e.g. Akkoma/Firefish~Calckey/Misskey). Although those introduce their own set of quirks to deal with (particularly Misskey/Firefish being even more different in style), that's mostly unavoidable when making the move to any different space.
