  • Remember, doing terrible things is a-okay if you do it with professional attire, polite speech, and the right tone. Mess up any of those and you're okay to reject and write off for being unprofessional and, if you're of certain demographics, too emotional.

  • As a heads up, I would request that both of you refrain from continuing this conversation. I say both, as I've temporarily banned @PatFussy@lemm.ee from here for their conduct throughout this thread.

I've received multiple reports calling them out as a troll, and on review of their posting history in other communities, I'm fairly confident that they're mostly a meme/shitposter (I mean literally, many of their more recent posts are to /c/shitpost or meme communities) with some unpopular opinions and a lack of tact, to put it nicely. If after the ban expires they come back & reply here continuing to argue and/or respond rudely, report their reply (or replies) and I'll simply make the ban permanent.

Note, I don't agree with the way they've conducted themselves here, hence the temporary ban. I've only refrained from a permanent ban because reviewing some of their comments elsewhere indicates they're not in the habit of trying to stir shit up. For whatever reason this thread got them into all these back & forths.

  • I don't really think this can be effectively handled by automated mechanisms tbh. If it could it might be nice, but this is tackling a social problem with a technical solution, and typically those don't really jive, in large part because the technical solutions make the mistake of supposing an original creative position of null bias or objectivity. Alternatively, they stem from a position of overestimation of one's knowledge and/or abilities related to subjects that they don't in fact know much about nor have much experience in.

For example, how would this kind of software handle a case in which the facts are not fully known yet (much less the more esoteric matter of what even makes a fact)? Similarly, how would you define a bias such that it could determine the biases, and ensure that the bias determination remained accurate over time or locality (biases are notorious for changing over time and varying by place)?

This kind of software would demand not only software/programming folks but also sociologists and philosophers for handling both surveying to assess & try to define biases as well as facts and parsing the ethical impacts of making those assessments, definitions, & determinations. You'd also probably want more specialists in fields I'm unaware of or forgetting at the moment to really thoroughly handle this kind of project. Anything less, I'd argue, would result in a blunder of a project and be rather irresponsible, to say the least.

  • @T0rrent01@lemmy.world could you add some additional text to the OP to elaborate on where you're coming from on this?

The title makes your position clear & the article points to part of why, but articulating why you're in favor of boycotting may help others understand more.

  • I'm a more of a "New sort" personally, especially when I'm trying to find different communities in All. However, one little feature I'd really like is a domain block, mainly for some of the more bot-driven instances like fanaticus.

I would go in to settings & disable bot post visibility, but there's some jank in that atm with either bot accounts not indicating they're bots or that seeming to not be a feature in Kbin, so it wouldn't address all of those types of accounts/posts.

  • To OP: no, hate speech & discrimination against religious people is not acceptable nor allowed. The examples cited appear to not meet that threshold to the admins or moderators of that community. I would recommend discussing this with either group if you believe otherwise.

If you would like to discuss religion there are a variety of communities you can find here and for Christianity specifically, here.

While I think the topic of religious discussion across the fediverse could be interesting, I don't think this thread offers a constructive basis from which to have this discussion, and as such I am locking it. For those interested in discussing the topic on a more constructive basis feel free to make a new thread here, or for religion more broadly or Christianity specifically, whichever active communities you find in the linked search results.

  • From OP's linked post regarding this community, the rule in question was this:

This community does not affirm practiced LGBTQ+ lifestyles

That doesn't appear to be related to mere discussion, but the basic being of LGBTQ+ people. I'm not sure what else "practiced LGBTQ+ lifestyles" might refer to, and the phrasing is just a longer way of saying they reject their being.

  • Yep! And they have different styling & feature sets that some may prefer, like Firefish has full text search & quoting posts unlike Mastodon for a super basic yet big difference.

There's also a bunch of other features I haven't dug into much that are interesting, like "antennae" for following words/hashtags and widgets for a variety of things. I don't know how well they all work, but overall it's aiming to be much more robust than Mastodon.

  • It's a difference of interpretation imo. Others here understandably read it as meaning or suggesting an international focus, but others still (such as myself) read it as meaning a general focus (which is itself reinforced by the front page's own description).

Personally I do agree with OP & others here in preferring non-specific communities like politics or law to be open to international politics & law, but I'm not in a position to make that call. Also as noted, I don't think the admins are interested in intervening in communities so long as their moderators aren't abusing their positions nor abandoning their accounts & letting communities go unmoderated.

  • This was an interesting read, and led me to try to track down some of the texts mentioned. Unfortunately I couldn't find the one the author seemed to enjoy most (Art of Conversation by Milton Wright) outside of the Internet Archive which does let you borrow it for a couple weeks.

However, I was easily able to find some of Carnegie's works, which incidentally seem like they might offer some advice to help some lurkers feel more comfortable posting, e.g. The Art of Public Speaking by Dale Carnegie, 1915 edition or How to Develop Self-Confidence and Influence People by Public Speaking by Dale Carnegie, 1956 Pocket Book edition.
