  • Jesus Christ, every thread about deportations has some moron talking about leopards.

Undocumented immigrants can't vote. I hate to take away whatever satisfaction you're getting from human suffering here, but it is categorically not "leopards eating faces".

Is that 39% the percentage of Asian Americans who voted for Trump? I bet most of those are rich enough that they don't have to worry. What percentage of your demographic voted Republican? Do you deserve to be punished for them?

The world isn't just and these people aren't getting what they deserve. Put this energy into volunteering for organizations trying to help people. We have to stick together to get through the next four years.

  • It is absolutely disgusting how many people are letting their disappointment and fear turn into vindictiveness and anger.

They're undocumented immigrants. By definition they didn't vote for him, and you should really do some introspection to figure out why this is the first thought you had.

  • I don't at all understand how you got your definition of "liberal". I think anyone who could conceivably be called a "tankie" would bristle at being called liberal.

Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on the rights of the individual, liberty, consent of the governed, political equality, right to private property and equality before the law.[1][2] Liberals espouse various and often mutually warring views depending on their understanding of these principles but generally support private property, market economies, individual rights (including civil rights and human rights), liberal democracy, secularism, rule of law, economic and political freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of religion.[3] Liberalism is frequently cited as the dominant ideology of modern history.

Both of our American parties are liberals. However, most Americans use the word to mean "progressive".

I think "Leftist" starts at anti-capitalism and goes from there. I half jokingly say a progressive is someone who thinks the system is broken and must be fixed. A Leftist is someone who thinks the system is working exactly as intended and must be destroyed.

  • Throughout history, a terrible number of people have died because some zealot thought they were doing the right thing.

If a police officer "knows" someone is guilty, what do you think about breaking the rules to ensure they are punished?

  • Most restaurants keep reservations in a $2.75 spiral notebook.

I doubt an online reservation calendar would be $10k for a single restaurant, but still...the only profit is marginal: the people who eat there who would have without the online calendar, and I doubt it would recoup the costs in a quarter or two. Especially considering that the wealth gap and tech gap mean that the number of people who want to schedule online is inversely related to the people who can afford to eat out a lot.

  • Date who you want. Do what you think is best. But it's weird that abortion is so often posited as a gender question when race is a better predictor. If white women stop voting for Republicans all of our rights would be safe.

Talk to your mothers and aunts, the rest of us can't outvote them yet.

  • When I said "more data than is publicly available now", did you think I was referring to a title on Lemmy?

The article includes someone they refer to as a "whistleblower". The analogy with ACORN would be noted liar Jacob Wohl.

The article also includes a statement from FEMA Agency head, Deanne Criswell. I was talking about her when I said "idiot Democrats who fired the accused without even the slightest inquiry".

On second thought, I'm not sure she's a Democrat. I assume she was appointed by Biden. But the article does not indicate any sort of inquiry or have a statement from the manager involved.

Are you under the impression that only NC Republicans hate FEMA? This conspiracy theory is decades old. I suspect you are referring to Helene because you are ignorant of the long standing antipathy between Republicans and FEMA.

If you have any reason to believe Republicans aren't threatening FEMA workers after Milton, feel free to share it. Otherwise, maybe wait for an investigation before jumping to conclusions.

  • No, you should not have any "takeaway" without way more information than is publicly available now. This is the same thing that happened with ACORN: Republicans made a bunch of false accusations and idiot Democrats were way too fast about accepting their premise and firing the accused without even the slightest inquiry into what actually happens. I see we have learned nothing.

My money says this was entirely about keeping their crews safe. It doesn't make sense for them to just arbitrarily not help Republicans, so I want to hear from the manager before they are pilloried.

  • I get where you're coming from, but the reason I disagree is because you're assuming these people are acting in good faith. Why do they need a title?

Queer folk have always used symbols to distinguish ourselves and find others. We're ~10% of the population and it's necessary. Straight people do not commonly do so, and 100% of the people who feel the need to wear it like a badge are actually signaling their refusal to let the rest of us exist.

I, for one, would feel perfectly comfortable in an MMO with 90% straight people. (This is just called existing in public.) I would leave immediately if 90% of people wore a "Straight" title for no discernable reason.

  • why aren't you guys screaming?

I screamed when Bush won a second term. I screamed when Trump won his first term. The American people can't really let me down any further than they already have.

Do you mean rioting? The guy even won the popular vote, possibly fair and square. Are you under the impression that there is some action we can take at this point to improve the situation?

because people couldn't get no injustice, they stayed home

That's not a valid interpretation of the situation. Millions of people who voted for Biden did not come out for Kamala. There'll be a lot of people trying to discern why and you probably won't like my guess, but it's too early to really have good information. Exit polls said only about 10 percent of people cared about Gaza at all. This idea of progressives not voting, sending the election to Trump doesn't hold water at all. Dems first instinct is to punch left. I hope they learn a better lesson from this loss.

People who don't vote aren't hanging out on Lemmy talking about politics. All of the vitriol from Democrats is even more misplaced than usual. This outcome was pretty much what I thought would happen, but when I talk about how Dem decisions aren't exciting voters, the response is to admonish me to vote, missing the point entirely.

it's broken deliberately by one side to suit them,

Refusing to admit the part the Dems play is part of the problem as well. We can't keep doing the same thing we've always done, and if we don't learn from this we are truly doomed.
