  • Yea, I obviously don’t expect the president to single handedly change things, the main point was mostly that going for a photo-op is hardly showing support if you are the president, especially in a country where that title is more than symbolic.

  • The idea that people in USA have to strike for pension and healthcare seems so absurd to me as someone from the EU.

If a president really stands in solidarity, they would be pushing for this on a federal level, ensuring this for all.

I get the resistance to social policy, using tax dollars and all, but then could you not simply mandate a minimal package that the employer has to guarantee?

  • Im not sure about drop down but Hyprland has a special desktop that you can overlay over any other desktop, neat for having a terminal whenever you need or pulling up some doc over whatever you are doing without having to mess up your layout or figure out which desktop to switch to.

As for alt-tab, just super + 1/2/3…. to switch to a different desktop.

  • If they use X itll be a removed and a half to get the higher refresh monitor to work with the lower refresh properly, I would rather forgo gsync than deal with that (as I have on my setup, running hyprland with my nvidia card with two 1080 asus monitors, one running 144hz).

  • How

    Jump
  • The easiest point to jump on is KDE-Plasma, look it up, it is a complete DE that is very customisable and it is all doable through a GUI - themes, widgets etc its all baked in. You can do a lot of customisation in plasma fairly simply, that might even be enough for you, you can really do a lot in plasma and you don’t need to know much besides getting it installed on your system.

From there, if you want to touch something a bit more complicated you could install some window manager to use alongside it and just fiddle with that, look at the configs, understand how that works, try to build your own thing from the ground up, or just copy someones dotfiles here.

E: To clarify, if you use a display manager like SDDM it will let you select the DE or WM on login.

  • I just store recovery phrases of all kinds on an encrypted USB stick (which is obviously only connected to my PC when I need to put a new one in or use it (which so far has happened never)), I feel like that is secure enough for me, although if I could laminate at home I might print and make small cards in a separate a card wallet. Any other way I feel like I would eventually lose them, the particular USB drive ive had for over 15 years, it is 512 MB lol.

  • USB headphones is yet another product manufactured with a narrow usecase, the audio world by and large outputs to either 2.5, 3.5 or 4.4 every step of the way. USB is completely phone centric.

    • Lack of a unified USB standard, meaning you will still have to deal with adapters to have compatibility across all devices. My PC for example only has USB A, my phone has lightning, my wifes has usbc, many peoples office PCs will also not have USB C just yet, although it does become less common to have a device without USB C.
    • USB output is digital, that means that you need to convert it to analogue, so your headphones need to put a DAC into them or the wire.
    • In many cases of headphone use you will actually not want the USB such as working with them in professional environments where you will be plugging them into an audio stack, where the autput is analogue already.
    • Some headphones need an AMP so power straight off the USB is not an option.
    • Balanced output.

A standard jack covers most usecases, headphones will never move to USB standard, they are analogue devices and should not have to have USB support on their end.

  • You don’t need a DAC if the phone has a jack, you only need one if it doesn’t, you might need a DAC/AMP for some headphones but most cans people will carry on the move will run just fine off an inbuilt jack.

  • It would depend on the flavour of FTL, if it means physically moving through space at supraluminal speeds (which would of course be impossible according to our current understanding), time would be flowing backwards.

Even traveling at the speed of light would be sufficient as it would mean getting to the destination the instant you achieved that speed.

But we do not even have to go as fast. Even doing constant 1G acceleration half the way with subsequent 1G deceleration for the other would enable us to reach the edge of the obervable universe withing the span of a human lifetime iirc.
