  • but the center of office holders is a pointless measure

da fuq? It's the definition of "center". It's the literal way we measure political leanings.

Issue by issue the Democrats are solidly to the right of the vast majority of the US population.

One problem is that when it comes to individual issues, Americans are fairly to the left of Democrats. But when it comes to politicians or broad policies, Americans are to the RIGHT of Democrats. The American voting population is stupid, and they don't consider individual issues (and in most cases, never vote on them via ballot measures etc). Also, a lot of policies are given the broad label of "reform", and Americans have very different ideas of what "reform" means. "Immigration reform" could mean anything from an open border policy to immediate execution of any illegal immigrants. Most Americans support "reform" though.

  • The difference between the far Right and the far Left is that the far Right only has these discussions of differences in ideology when they're in their own safe spaces. Separatist vs supremacist, authoritarian vs anarchist, Christian vs pagan. But when confronted with the Left, they close ranks, forgive each others' shortcomings, and tow the line. Meanwhile Leftists would rather lose again and again than team up with someone who has the slightest difference in political ideology.

  • Voting matters. Or at least it mattered, not sure if it will matter going forward. It was the single easiest and most effective thing you could have done to stop the fascists, especially if you live in a swing state.

You didn't fail because you were being a coward. You failed because you fell for Russian propaganda.

  • In the St Louis area, about 20 years ago, there was a friendly understanding between the rural white supremacist gangs (peckerheads, SS, etc) and the Black urban (mostly Crip affiliated) gangs. The white gangs had been taken over by a group of white separatists who advocated peaceful coexistence but absolutely no intermingling with the inferior races. Meanwhile, the Black gangs were perfectly amenable to that and kept their activities in the urban area. When the opioid epidemic hit, they divided up territory, kept to their own lanes, and occasionally cooperated against cops.

  • Your method of always voting for the lesser evil lead you here

It literally, mathematically did not lol

I am a straight white man, American citizen by birth. What leftist political activity I've done has been anonymous except for being a registered Democrat. Even in the worst case, I'll be fine under the fascists.

I voted for Kamala Harris to save YOUR ass. And if you can't be bothered to at least do the same, well...when they come for you, you can comfort yourself with the fact that this is what you voted for.

  • And we circle back around to "Democrats did a bad thing" instead of "a tiny number of Democrats went against the wishes of the party and joined all of the Republicans to do a bad thing"

    Propaganda.

"The Democrats" did not vote for this bill and implying so is fucking. Propaganda.

  • I think in general you're correct. However, OP noted that this problem (people constantly misunderstanding) seems to be exclusive to lemmy (Fediverse et al) and not limited solely to her communication. I've noticed it as well, and I it that points to a quirk of this community.

  • I think this is a big part of the problem. Instead of thinking, "what did THEY INTEND to say with that post", people think "how did I FEEL when I read the post".

The former matters a lot more than the latter in communication. All communication should be about translating and decoding the intention of the other person first and foremost.
