  • I'm an IT manager and today I had the director of HR bring me her new iphone asking if I can help her set it up. Um, no... first, that isn't my job, and second, I have no idea how to setup an iphone. I assume it's an easy process but I've never done it before and have more pressing matters to attend to instead of fiddling with her new phone.

  • Cool.

Now, just explain why it needs to be remade, what goals the new version will achieve and how you plan on achieving them.

This is how shit is supposed to get done: you have an idea, you share the idea, people provide feedback on your idea, and you adjust until you have a working plan. I've never seen a trump administration accomplish this bad minimum of planning.

  • May you always look back on the puppy months and remember the cuteness... and forget the middle of the night trips outside, the early mornings, the late nights, the chewed up [furniture | shoes | cords | etc.], accidents on the carpet, biting, scratching and constant ball of energy (between naps) of this cute little bundle of fur.

(I'm currently 10 weeks into puppy training my new mini goldendoodle and I'm optimistic that the worst is now behind us)

  • What we, the product, should be doing is selling our engagement to companies that need new and unique data to train AI models.

The data we create (including this interaction) is more valuable than the 'service' Facebook provides.

Maybe that's the way Lemmy will eventually enshittify, by paying people to join it and interact so that the data can be used for AI training... who needs advertisers? (Though, try to avoid the urge to tell them to go fuck themselves)

  • Nah, you pick your battles. If the kid wants Nikes because that's what everyone else has, then get him Nikes. I heard 10 years ago that Sketchers are for toddlers and old people... and from what I've seen that perception hasn't changed.

Like it or not, we are social animals and fitting in is important, especially for children. When my daughter was a toddler we made it a point to NOT expose her to Paw Patrol because it is just blatant targeted marketing to children. It was a point of pride for us to be able to walk past Paw Patrol branded apple sauce and not have her begging for it. And then we sent her to preschool and after the first week she came home sad that all the other kids were playing Paw Patrol but she didn't know any of the characters, so she couldn't play. That was a real shitty day for me as a parent because that was my failing. We started letting her watch Paw Patrol (as well as other non-PBS kids shows) because pop culture is important. Same with fashion... not every kid needs to wear Nike, but they should be aware of what the trends are and have a say in what they get.

Edit: I'm glad Lemmy makes it easy to block trolls.

  • I don't really buy the argument that the government should bother to sell some of its capacity

I agree ... the reason Amazon started AWS is because their compute need fluctuates throughout the year and they needed to build out their data centers to meet their peak need... most of the year it sat unused.

The government doesn't have that problem, they can build out for their projected need and not have tons of waste.
