  • This is just going to move porn back to people sharing their personal collections through decentralized systems. Normally decentralized is good, but for things like porn there needs to be some 'ownership' of what's being provided. Back in the message group and bbs days there was a lot of illegal shit floating around. Places like PornHub work hard to ensure they aren't used to distribute anything illegal.

  • The company I work for is a huge medical equipment manufacturer, practically everyone in my building are either scientists, R&D or manufacturing process management and those positions all require specific degrees.

I work in IT, and they want the people leaders at least to have degrees. The position I was hiring for was a people leader, but I didn't feel a degree was necessary. That said, if someone starting out on IT asked me if they should get a degree I would tell them that they should work in IT for a few years to see if they like it, and if they want to advance in IT then they will have a much easier time advancing with a degree. Depending how high they want to go they might even need a Masters.

  • The value of specific degrees may be diluted, however the value of a college degree in general does not - at least from the perspective of being able to land a job. If 75% of the applicants for a job have a college degree, the 25% are going to find it difficult to get a first interview.

Even if they do get the interview it is still an uphill battle. I just hired someone on my team who doesn't have a college degree. He was by far more qualified than anyone else I spoke with because he had 20 years experience. I hadn't even noticed that he didn't have a college degree until I got a call from HR asking me to justify hiring someone without a college degree for this position, and me just saying 'He has 20 years experience' wasn't good enough justification.

A lot of millennials went to college and chose specific degrees due to the promise of a higher wage. That wage difference isn’t there anymore.

You're right, compared to a career from a trade school versus a career from a college degree there isn't much difference, but having a college degree can still give an edge over someone without a degree in getting a job.

  • Thank you... I'm an idiot and wasn't thinking about the Southern Ocean as in 'The' Southern Ocean... instead I was thinking about it in terms of the oceans in the south (as in, not necessarily glacial). But yes, now I get it and understand. It probably would have helped if I had opened the link to start with.

  • The value of a degree doesn't drop because more people get one, if that were the case there'd be little value in finishing high school. If everyone else has a college degree and you don't, then you are at a disadvantage.

The value of a college degree will decrease as the cost of a college education goes up, the knowledge gained from a college education is available elsewhere, and fewer people see a reason to get a college degree.

  • Is the Trump admin a good community you are so desperately preaching about?

No, and I never said that good people help good communities. Good people help communities in need.

If this flood hit Mar a Lago and destroyed everything in it's path and only killed people who are a part of the administration then I would be cheering. The people directly causing the issue would be the ones getting the consequences. However, that's not what would happen because there are housekeeping staff there who just need a job, there are families who are on vacation there (some likely reluctantly dragged there by a maga spouse or parent). And so, if there's even a chance that a single innocent person is in need, then every effort should be made to help.

  • You sound like a preacher who says that natural disasters hit us because of homosexuality.

Good people help communities, no matter who they are. Good people don't cheer or act smug when had things happen to a community. There are dozens of young girls missing after their summer camp got swept away. It is very possible most, of not all of their parents were trump supporters... none of the children voted for trump. This isn't a point for your team, these are lives destroyed.

Yes, if this happened in California term trump would make it clear he doesn't care, and his supporters wouldn't flinch. But those are despicable people, pity them and show them how we should respond to tragedy.

  • I see your point, but as a counterpoint... I just bought a used Chevy Volt. It qualified for the Used EV Tax Credit because it was under $25k. While shopping around I did notice that most used EVs were right around the $24,999 price regardless of their features and I was fortunate enough to find one that was fully loaded and had very low miles at this price. Without the tax credit this car would probably have been priced closer to $27k but because the tax credit exists if they had priced it that high, it likely wouldn't have sold.

I feel very fortunate to have found this particular car, at this price, while we still have the tax credit available.

  • I'm not saying to waste space... but when manufacturers start a pissing match among themselves and say that it's because it's what the customers want, we end up with shit. Why does anyone need a screen that curves around the edge of the phone? What purpose does this serve? Who actually asked for this?

I would give up some of my screen area to have forward facing speakers. I want a thicker phone that has better battery life. I also want to be able to swap out my battery. Oh, and I don't want the entire thing encased in glass. If we're so concerned about phone size then they should stop designing them so that a case is required.

  • Oh, I know, and I know it was an absolute dumb thing to even think would be in the realm of possibility, but I was just trying to find something, anything to grab on to and help keep my hope on the ventilator.

The best I'm hoping for now is that trump will do something good on accident, like how he legalized thc in 2018. Sure, he did it in the stupidest way possible, but it's something.

  • Agreed.

I hate trump and Musk and I morn the world we could have if it weren't for people like them. However... after the election the only bit of hope that I - and which I knew would never happen - was that maybe they would use their authoritarianism to make the very hard decisions that could lead to a better society, such as phasing out human operated vehicles on public roads in favor of interconnected, self-driving vehicles. We have the technology to do so many amazing things... there just isn't enough profit to bribe the politicians, pay the executives and build it to make it worth while.

  • My state is single consent and I was recording a call with att once and the rep straight up tried to gaslight me. When I told her that I was recording this, so I can play back exactly what she said, she told me that she's in California and didn't give consent. I laughed and told her that since I'm not sitting in California I don't really care about their laws at the moment.
