  • I'm still around. Was it the giant cast of characters or politics that put you off? It's been a long time, but I read through the series.

Contact is a wonderful book. Also been many years since I read it.

  • He's my pick as well, because I think he's a good, sharp guy, and I think he'll help the ticket the most. If I wasn't concerned about them winning, I'd probably pick Buttigieg. Kelly is a little more conservative than I'd prefer and Pete just impresses me every time he opens his mouth.

  • You're going to get a lot of agreement here: Lemmy decided not to implement it for users. We still use votes on posts and comments, and you can sort by them, but no one gets scored by his many they have, and I think that's a good thing. Lots of folks on Reddit modify their behavior specifically to generate karma, and often not in good ways.

  • The article makes a mention of the early part of the movie Her, where he's writing a heartfelt, personal card that turns out to be his job, writing from one stranger to another. That reference was exactly on target: I think most of us thought outsourcing such a thing was a completely bizarre idea, and it is. It's maybe even worse if you're not even outsourcing to someone with emotions but to an AI.

  • Older guy here, went bald in my 20s. Let me say this: while going bald or becoming bald sucks ass, being bald is fine. I had lots of thick hair, and when it started going away and I didn't look like me in the mirror anymore. I figured women would find me less attractive.

What I learned is that it takes a while for your self image to catch up to your reflection in the mirror. One of the shitty things for most people about going bald is that it happens over a long time, and when you're used to one level of baldness, it gets worse. But eventually it levels out.

There are women who aren't attracted to bald guys (and that's fine, attraction is subjective), but it turns out there are women who are especially attracted to bald guys, and that the vast majority of women don't care. Doing things like having a comb-over or wearing a toupee are often a turnoff, but I think it's as much because of the associated lack of confidence than the look itself.

I can sincerely say that I wouldn't want my hair back today. The look suits me and it's easier to deal with.

  • You know, on the page I found it, it says it's a sand fly, but I think you're right. Sand flys are really small, and I'm not sure I've seen a magnified version of them. Looking for other images, I think this is really one and the other is mislabeled:

  • We always called those "sand crabs" and these sand fleas

Those are also called "sand flies," and they actually bite and suck blood and stuff. The things linked really are little crabs - we used to fish with them.

  • For sure don't in any way respond, just report spam and block the number. Lots of these things are phishing attempts, trying to get you to give personal information (or even money), and aren't connected to the things they mention.

  • My take as well. We need to win this one. I love Pete, and would happily vote for him for president of he were the nominee, but a black woman and a gay man on the same ticket is just going to be too much for a lot of voters. Plus, I think they need to select someone from a purple state who can help bring in important votes.
