  • This broader issue has been bad for a while. I honestly wonder if our climate change situation would be better today if the media hadn't given equal time to scientists who didn't think there was human-influenced climate change, even though they were an infinitesimally small fraction of climate scientists. I can understand why some people thought it was a debate among scientists long after it was broadly accepted.

Likewise, treating every wholly fabricated lie that Trump spouts out like it deserves consideration gives him underserved legitimacy.

  • I had an assembly class in college. I didn't love of at all. Got my first job after graduating and it was writing space shuttle engine control software, which was in assembly. I was kind of surprised at how fast it became natural after dealing with it full time. Still, it felt luxurious when we upgraded the controller and could do the software in C.

  • Yes, the network that had to pay nearly a billion dollars for pushing a false narrative in order to get Trump elected the last time around is the perfect venue. Oh, and a live Fox News audience? What could be bad about that?

    What a joke.

  • Attraction is subjective. There are norms, but everyone has their own preferences. Never listen to anyone who claims to speak for any giant group of people (gender, race, culture, whatever). Most women aren't going to tell you that, but there are assholes in every group. If they're speaking for themselves, that's fine though: no one is obligated to disregard any of your attributes.

When I went bald, there were women who said bald guys aren't attractive. But then there were some who said they were especially attractive, and most just didn't care.

  • At the risk of making a serious reply in a shitpost thread...

Who you're attracted to and what you're looking for is subjective. No one else gets a say in what that is.

However, there are repercussions. The more rare what you're looking for is, the harder it is to find. The more broadly desired what you're looking for is, the more you're competing with other people.

So sure, go looking for what you want, but be aware that you might be looking a long time, and they might not be interested in you.

  • I think you're the only one taking it as "hinging on." Most people are taking it as "Person is against X but also chose X" (where X itself is a bad thing). Headline makes it clear he's both a racist and a hypocrite. Both are important to know.

  • It's both, in combination. He's being racist, and he has kids with an Indian woman. Leaving out that part would be a glaring omission to the story.

It's very much like the stories of the Republicans who want to make abortion illegal, which is bad enough, but it's monumentally worse when it turns out they've had or paid for abortions.

  • Most of that stuff doesn't bother me. I don't think most legal clerks have the luxury of choosing only judges who they're philosophically aligned with to work for. And everyone, even big companies, deserve legal council. But she married a shit bag, and she's endorsed his views, so I don't feel badly for her.

  • KSM is definitely detail oriented. I sometimes think that's just part of hard SF: they want to make sure everything is explained, and it doesn't stop at the science.

I like those books, but I get that they aren't for everyone. Contact is different, as is neuromancer.
