  • While I liked both Harris and Biden, this last election proved you need to be a white make and you need to be loud and argumentative. Policies, intelligence, ethics, competence are no longer important. Biden biggest mistake was laying out the foundation that would make america better over a decade, when people are clamoring for immediate action, or at least noise and chaos. Newsom can stand there and argue with the fascists.

  • The problem is we’re over-consuming now, over-populating now, but will feel the effects of lower birth rates in 50+ years. There’s extremely delayed feedback on population trends, but that doesn’t make it untrue.

Even conservatives sometime start from a point of truth. The problem is their solution is to turn back rights for women, opportunities for women. Technically correct, if you have no morals or empathy.

For the rest of us concerned about this possibility, society needs to change a lot to remove obstacles from people who do choose to have children. And this would take a couple generations to take effect so we need to start now, to stabilize the dropping population in 50-100 years

  • I’m pretty sure a large number of “illegal” immigrants are those who overstay their student visas or screw up their paperwork. People with a productive life who came here legally.

There’s got to be better way to catch up on paperwork.

  • Depends on where you’re from. Up in this blue corner I know very few who would support it. Ironically they’re immigrants.

The “No Kings” protests are much bigger here, and police are not allowed to work with ICE.

Recently had ICE kidnapping two weekends in a row in my town. One was a big deal because they kidnapped a father off the street and abandoned his kid. The other was a big deal because they threatened a city councilor for his presence and his video in support of his constituents. Recently they kidnapped a couple of teens and pre-teens as well. No one here supports that

  • US has the cheap solution: higher immigration than most developed countries. I’m sure we’re going to encourage that while we try to figure out how to make having children more appealing. No one would mess that up, right?

  • Not at all. The people who are motivated by advancing technology, aren’t motivated to overcome corruption, incline equality, to replace economic systems, etc.

All you’d be doing is stifling innovation, improvement, a reason for hope in the future, for ….. the same unmet needs, but now with less hope

  • It’s hard to say exactly, since the mess was even more complex than the relationship. On the surface from my perspective, she was constantly yelling at me so I sort of withdrew to protect myself. Eventually she either recognized what she turned into or decided I was too emotionally withdrawn.

But the next layer is why we each acted like that and it becomes a mess. Looking back on it now, it’s strange to look at our behavior and wonder how it got like that

There were clearly communications issues, and unmet needs. There were some mental health issues and some serious stress from a major physical health issue. There were self-esteem issues and empathy issues. There are always time and stress issues but what happens when you realize that work is far more relaxing than the stress of a relationship that’s not working?

  • That’s not a trade off.

Taking care of people basic needs is not a technology problem or even a resources problem. It’s political, economic, corruption, logistics, whatever variation decides who gets what and how it gets there. We already have the resources and technology to do this

Advanced research projects have no effect on whether the politico-economic system takes care of people’s basic needs. It does, however, help advance society, enhance our capabilities, create new opportunities to improve our lives

  • One of the reasons I moved away from cast aluminum is they can’t handle the heat. Over time they tended to warp pretty badly. I always cook at a fairly low setting so I don’t know if my ex was forgetting to turn off burners or something, but the pans warped.

But the major reason is I only see them with non-stick interior, which starts flaking off after ten years

I’m expecting my stainless and cast iron to be the last cookware I need to buy

    #BuyItForLife

  • Huh, I’m opposite.

    • I use cast iron 70% of the time because foods I cook go in a skillet and browned foods taste good
    • stainless 20% of the time when there’s a reason (like simmering curry or any acidic stew). Or pasta, because the spaghetti pot is stainless
    • carbon steel 1-2/week - gotta use it to cook breakfast on weekends
    • Teflon occasionally (unless you count my rice cooker, but that’s on the list to replace with stainless steel when it dies)
  • I’m getting there but I can’t believe this is still not a solved problem:

    • smart watch synchronous time
    • home automation hub keeps time over programmable switch
    • kitchen clock is an Alexa accessory so time is synched
    • microwave is “efficient”, meaning I can’t get the damn clock to stay on
    • expensive coffeemakers don’t have clocks

“Atomic” and Ethernet clocks exist but why is there still so little variety and are not in appliances? I just got a decorative clock and spent way too much time looking for an atomic or Ethernet one that I liked before settling on one I have to set twice a year plus whenever the batteries die

  • Maybe car leases?

    • lower income can’t afford to purchase and a lease is a lower payment
    • wealthy either want to replace cars more often or use a car leases by a business

If middle income fall into that trap, it’s probably on the way to lower income?
