As someone in a blue state where governance is sane, I’m “raw dogging it” (effing offensive slang term but now I’ve used it once in my life and can rest easy) and bringing my kids (teens). M also going to the local demonstration rather than go into the city for a big one - to some extent it’s a numbers game: ICE can’t raid them all and police aren’t legally allowed to help them
…. And hopefully my optimism is well founded

Edit: huge success! Entirely peaceful. While a few cops drove by, there was no police presence. Thousands of people of all ages lining both sides of main st, and three sides of our town common. Constant honking from supporters driving by. It was very inspirational. I’m proud of my fellow citizens and hope our voice for restoring sanity and democracy is heard.
For those pessimists,a bit more context why I was so optimistic….. a few years back, our mayor and police were participants in a local BLM rally. Also a big part of local outrage against fascism was a city counselor getting assaulted and arrested for videoing an illegal raid on one of his constituents.
Such an optimist. I’m hoping for a clear declaration of illegality so the guardsmen involved have no excuses for knowing it’s an illegal order. I hope it will support any with the courage to stand up for the law, and will dissuade any cowards with the expectation they will face jail time
Right. Part of the problem is self-righteous people thinking in black and white.
Trump promised to deport illegals. Of course there won’t be any impact on documented immigrants.
People who think this way also tend not to be able to synthesize the larger answer based on other info, such as Trump promising to act as dictator from day one or trumps complete lack of empathy and respect for the law, or the amoral sycophants he put into leadership positions
Every president has deported undocumented immigrants and we don’t usually object too much. If that’s what was happening this wouldn’t be as big an issue. The problem is when it’s clearly racist , or depriving people of human rights and due process, or done by a bunch of thugs cowering behind masks while holding themselves above the law, or brutalizing witnesses and spreading terror., or kidnapping people from schools, churches, courthouses. Was this voter able to connect the dots?
It’s even stupider with the attack on universities. We’ve always benefited from a “brain drain” from other countries where many of the best and brightest come here for an education, and some of them stay no to build companies, improve our science and technology.
We’re not just attacking immigrants who make our country great, drive the economy, and offset declining birth rates, but we’re specifically attacking those who are legal and might improve science, technology, innovation.
A person in this thread above here was talking about being politically unaware of Greta Thunberg. It is valuable to continue fact checking, both so we don’t normalize the lies and to catch any unaware people
Stop being obtuse. Giving up advancements in science and technology is stagnation. Thinking it’s a good idea to not do anything until people are fed and housed is stagnation. Again, it’s not a zero sum game. Those unfed and unhoused people are not that way because of investments in technology and science, and not doing those things will not affect those people
Focus your nonsense on corruption, exploitation, capitalistic excess, income disparities and most of all elected people with empathy ….. that are the cause and could help

I don’t see it as a zero sum game. On the contrary, I see advancing science and technology as an investment in our future that makes it easier to take care of our people, and stagnation as making it harder to care for our people
While I liked both Harris and Biden, this last election proved you need to be a white make and you need to be loud and argumentative. Policies, intelligence, ethics, competence are no longer important. Biden biggest mistake was laying out the foundation that would make america better over a decade, when people are clamoring for immediate action, or at least noise and chaos. Newsom can stand there and argue with the fascists.
The problem is we’re over-consuming now, over-populating now, but will feel the effects of lower birth rates in 50+ years. There’s extremely delayed feedback on population trends, but that doesn’t make it untrue.
Even conservatives sometime start from a point of truth. The problem is their solution is to turn back rights for women, opportunities for women. Technically correct, if you have no morals or empathy.
For the rest of us concerned about this possibility, society needs to change a lot to remove obstacles from people who do choose to have children. And this would take a couple generations to take effect so we need to start now, to stabilize the dropping population in 50-100 years
I’m pretty sure a large number of “illegal” immigrants are those who overstay their student visas or screw up their paperwork. People with a productive life who came here legally.
There’s got to be better way to catch up on paperwork.
Depends on where you’re from. Up in this blue corner I know very few who would support it. Ironically they’re immigrants.
The “No Kings” protests are much bigger here, and police are not allowed to work with ICE.
Recently had ICE kidnapping two weekends in a row in my town. One was a big deal because they kidnapped a father off the street and abandoned his kid. The other was a big deal because they threatened a city councilor for his presence and his video in support of his constituents. Recently they kidnapped a couple of teens and pre-teens as well. No one here supports that
US has the cheap solution: higher immigration than most developed countries. I’m sure we’re going to encourage that while we try to figure out how to make having children more appealing. No one would mess that up, right?
I look at long term trends where the global population peaks in a few decades then heads down all too quickly, and find it important to act to stabilize that at a level a bit below here we are now
