Welcome to the Melbourne Community Daily Discussion Thread.
It's been a rough week or two with the referendum getting pretty nasty (regardless of which outcome you were hoping for), the middle east, and just general life. Be kind to yourselves today. Maybe avoid the news. Buy a bunch of spring flowers. Hug a cat. Find something good in the world.
No cat available but hugged a dog. Fed a magpie. Might go buy some tomato seedlings even though it’s a bit earlier than I normally plant, hopefully the cold next week won’t bother them too much.
Yeah I'm trying hard to chillax
And I'm done! No more shift work for Mr Fungus ever again!! I am going home to nap, and then enjoy a week off before I start my new job.
Yay for you! I did night shifts for about 10 years. Changing to only working days was wonderful and made a big improvement to my health & happiness.
Yeah, just got into my 5th year and while money's excellent, the work life balance is dreadful. Hoping to also see some improvements in my own health and happiness.
Really really struggling with beating away the black dog this arvo, but considering that reaching out to people in my past can be quite overwhelming when you're in a period of flux, I think I could be doing a lot worse.
Grabbed veggies in time before the rain hit, and I dragged myself to the kitchen to put together a massive hoppin john with the black eyed beans and shiitake mushrooms I'd soaked all day... Letting it cook and trying to force my brain to do the non negotiable work stuff I need to finish before I go on leave.
Right there with you. Even for 'fun' stuff I don't want to do the work.
But I've spent today doing a few loads of laundry and checking off the absolute essentials
The No vote has hit me far harder than I thought it would. Change in the world is so very slow. 😔 We can exhaust ourselves trying to make it a better place and the effect is barely noticable.
Yeah that's how I know the dark canine is around, even the fun stuff doesn't feel appealing and feels like too much
hugs
I love Australian idioms.
I am feeling pretty good about maintaining my clean apartment and just generally cleaning up my act. Things like unloading the dishwasher instead of using dishes from it as required, so I'm not piling up dirty ones in the sink until the dishwasher is near empty then refilling it. Now my sink is empty all the time and clean, because the dirty dishes go into the dishwasher. Similarly, I'm folding my clothes rather than using them from the clothes horse, so I have actually put away my clothes horse which makes the room look tidier.
Add to that just general things like wiping surfaces down and vacuuming something if I see it on the floor. Even used one of the dyson attachment things and cleaned the intake vents in the kitchen and bathroom. Oh and whenever I make a coffee I make sure to clean the machine and throw away the grounds before I walk away with the drink so it's good to go for next time.
These are obviously normal things I should have been doing all along, which normal adults do all the time, but the ol' brain hasn't really been in it for a while.
The wax melts I bought are also adding to the nice clean feeling of the place. More home-like. I should get some kind of art for the walls.. ohh I might MAKE some art for the walls! Either make some images using AI and have them printed/framed or put to canvas.. or maybe even have a go at some actual art with paints/stuff.
ooo get one of those folding boards if you haven't already. They make it so much fun and faster. I ended up also making some template ones for towels so they fit neatly in the cupboard
Everytime I eat pistachios I feel like one of those little monkeys in a David Attenborough doco as he talks about how they've learned to use tools or some shit.
I have committed airfryer. Reading the manual (cos I'm weird) and it says 'Do not use with oil'. Wtf? If you are going to fry then somehow oil HAS to be involved. Or do they mean like deep frying?
EDIT: thanks heaps for comments. Am about to embark on the first essay into airfrying. Keeping it simple with some party pies.
Treat it just like an oven. If you put oil on your crumbed food then put it on. If you don't normally, then you don't have to.
I think they mean deep frying. Of course oil is involved to stop your items from sticking to the basket. But nothing is actually getting fried, it's more like an intense fan forced oven
Hrmm I always brush things with oil before they go in.
There are some decent ways to lightly coat food with your favorite oil. I use a Misto for sesame oil when I'm doing fried rice.
Last night I was reading about how to grow mushrooms to try microdosing psilocybin in an attempt to avoid being brave and seeking professional help/prescription drugs.. but tonight as I was leaving my sister's place my (2 days away from being) 4 year old niece yelled she wanted another hug and kiss from Uncle Brad as I was getting into my car and that might just be enough to get me through another week.
Waffles for breakfast today.
Ooh, yes please.
wow.! Deeelish.
pros of putting a light in a deep kitchen cupboard: you can see everything in the cupboard.
cons of putting a light in a deep kitchen cupboard: everything includes the dirt that has built up on the shelf.
I am now involved in pulling everything out and cleaning.
With the onset of longer, sunny days, there was a lot more light in our west-facing lounge room. Which was lovely, except now I could see all the dust really clearly. This is why they invented spring cleaning.
Just made a fried chorizo and pork loin sandwich with lettuce, mayo, avocado and drizzle of hot sauce. Was bomb.
Last I went to Bunnings: no sausage
Democracy near me: no sausage
Sunday market today: closed, no sausage
It’s a sad day indeed :(
🌭
thank god
Mr Woof has Sunday morning worked out.
I have now spent one small fortune on shelves and "organisation" stuff for my kitchen. Hopefully it all works out, but I swear whoever designed put together my kitchen did everything they could to make sure nothing would fit. Deciding to run the gas pipe through the centre of the corner cabinet is particularly annoying. The new fridge opens up a few posibilities with magnetic shelves though, and I found a few options I haven't seen before.
In a way it's been good having an active excuse to not read the news today, I have managed to get a wee bit more done in that morning fog - got out of bed before 10 (yay!), dishwasher up and running (yay!), and feeling some stirrings of positive energy and motivation to do something goal-directed/purpose oriented aside from vegetate sadly on the couch. Rare! Must grasp onto these wisps before they disappear!
big hugs
I've messaged 4 people, two have replied so far, feel like a silly 14 year old checking for responses rather than someone 20 years older. Still going to reach out to a couple more even if it feels like pulling teeth because of my anxiety, if you don't face the discomfort and reach out you can't expect people to stay in touch, I have to keep reminding myself
im annoyed
this friend who i was supposed to meet today for brunch has bailed on me stating she is too tired and sick. we made a plan for bottomless brunch earlier this week for sunday (as she said she cant do friday cuz she's out partying thursday) but has been partying friday and saturday too and now is too tired sigh
First pizza on a tortilla base!
Seemed to work really well. Was a little worried about its structural integrity but it held up surprisingly.
Usually I have lots of wild, weird, intense dreams. I always have.
This morning I had a dream that was so calm and nice the feeling stayed with me as I woke up. So unusual, I’m like pleasantly baffled.
Morning everyone. I’m beginning to hate not sleeping
Not sleeping totally sucks
My sleep keeps getting out of routine on weekends
I peeked out through the screen door at the black cat in my yard and he hissed at me. Rude. I shut the door and went to make my sweet old girl her breakfast.
Fuck me, posts supporting the Yes vote are getting negged on reddit
would not surprise me if there was organised brigading of voting
If it hits all it could also just be my countrymen in the US. We know very little about your politics and are probably more likely to see astroturfed info rather than grassroots.
oof this morning was one of those "slept horribly wrong and now everything has seized up" dealies. Worked out all that stiffness, but as a consequence my gammy arm has gone Now we have some space to talk, about all that gardening you did yesterday......
Cats are very sociable today.
Sending fisiocrem & heat packs (cats = organic heat packs)
Set my alarm for 12:30am not 12:30pm, guess I'll be having another night awake... At least I won't be at work so I can hopefully nod off when I start to get sleepy around 3am.
It's good to go for a walk and not get rained on. Thank you Mother Nature.
Hi DT peeps, I'm feeling quite down at the moment. Does anyone have any reccos for a decent movie to take my mind off things?
I watched Zoolander yesterday and it stands up well. If you want something to make you smile.
The Mummy .
Thanks, I'll give it a watch
Anchorman for stupid-funny, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty for feel good ending, Spider-Man into Spiderverse for escapism and great soundtrack.
Man on the Moon (1999) is happy and sad.
Not sure I'm up for more sad at the moment
You should check 'Free Guy' out. Watched it recently, and loved the movie! Also comedy.
Ok, my vegie seedlings do like being outside. I was taking them out in the early morning and bringing them in at night before so they shouldn't be getting much more light than they were? But I picked off some of the older fainted parsley leaves a few days ago and it's starting to perk up tall. The second leaves on the spinach and carrots are getting bigger and the cat grass is actually starting to sprout (after a second sowing). The pots are so tiny though...
Adventuring in Minecraft and I found another village. I found a potato in a chest and grew it repeatedly until I had some to take for myself. Then I went on a balls to the wall adventure (falling into snow and freezing is a thing now?) and found a dark oak forest with giant mushrooms. I'm taking some saplings.
Edit: Oh yeah. And there was randomly a pink sheep
Melbcat was being restless and kept trying to step onto my laptop while I was typing... kind of like a toddler when you're on the phone. When that didn't work she headbutted my cup full force like Spyro and dumped an entire cup of coffee over my bed. Plus everything nearby.
It splashed the keyboard a little but thankfully no damage to the laptop. And thankfully there was waterproofing on the mattress and quilted cloth protectors on the pillows. But I ended up having to pull out the old spare bedding I was going to donate because the second main set is still in the wash from fleas/spilled baby food.
I can't really stop having cuppas in bed because of fatigue but will be putting them in travel cups with sealed lids. And I'll get some actually waterproof pillow protectors. Might rethink the arrangement of things or leave a permanent drop cloth under a high risk spot too.
Edit: I think she wanted food. Fed her and it was approaching 3pm which is when I was giving extra meals. She's eating so much wet food lately that I'm wondering if the biscuits are just too hard or maybe it's her thyroid or her teeth. The little tins of wet food are so expensive too. I wish I could just buy the big affordable cans of Snappy Tom because it's basically the same thing for much better value, but remembering that one might not have gone down well.
Hmm, so I’ve found that Mlem and Memmy have not been notifying of some replies which is a bit annoying. I’m not sure what is going on there. I also found my song list for 2021 and it looks like I’ve repeated a couple of favourites (I was a bit suspicious of this), so I’ll have to find replacements for those.
Thinking about gratitude and sending out positive energy. ✨
I've been having the same issue with some replies on the mobile browser from the start; I think it might be a Lemmy problem sadly
Online theory of first aid course completed. Phew.
Did a recce earlier of Southland parking as I haven't parked in the area I want to park in since the great remodel. Also went into Bunnings to get a refund on the cut key that didn't work and some Felix for the felines. Not sure if people were particularly feral or if that's normal Sunday around here, as I tend to avoid driving on a Sunday for that reason.
Now having lunch and then back to Operation Sort Shit.
Finished s3 of rake. That episode was a lovely, lovely one to end the night on. It really shines with the character studies, I don't know why but I've always particularly liked Barney's character development and trajectory, not just in relation to Cleave
Wow, the All Blacks vs Ireland was such an intense game, so excited to see the ABs win!!!
What we need is a permanent cabinet member that advises the PM on policy issues from the point of view of First Nations peoples. How hard is that?
This would not confer any of the benefits an independent Voice would have achieved. Advice needs to be grassroots, frank, fearless and not subject to cabinet practice of collective decision making and confidentiality. Cabinet solidarity practices make it impossible for such a member to publicly contradict government policy.
the cabinet member should be using grass roots advisers , that has always been an option, tho how are the advisers chosen?
also the cabinet member can issue press releases
why don't these people do their bloody job 🤬
and fuck that solidarity shit, that's straight out of Stalinism, it's one reason among many ( among other reasons were anti-semitism and the support of genocide in Rwanda ) I no longer join left leaning political, social activism groups or think tanks ( I'm independent with strong left views )
and don't talk about the shitty approach to broadcasting their views, they have this stupid idea that humans should be given dry facts and that should be enough to sway them 🙄
humans are both **emotional and rational **creatures and all discussions and advertising should be handled that way
also sick of people using their own metrics to measure other people's lives and the latest fashion to measure society is to measure outcomes and compare that to some kind of idea of what society should be, both sides do this ,
just fucking ask people what they want, stop telling people, how hard is that

i hate recaptcha so much, half the time i end up humming i hate traffic lights, the other half is wtf, how come these guys on motorbikes never seem to wear proper shoes
Bit overwhelmed this morning. Sad for the referendum, and sad for the Gaza conflict. People are so mean to each other and its honestly miserable to think about.
