Welcome to the Melbourne Community Daily Discussion Thread.
Sick kitty is having a bad day. It's so hard to watch, but there's nothing to be done, we've made him extra comfy today, so hopefully that helps a little. I think the time is looming ever larger at the moment, I hate to accidentally prophecise, but I don't think he'll be stealing prawns this Christmas.
I’m very sorry to hear it. Perhaps a prawn could appear early this year for sir 💔
Lots of hugs to you - we went through it a couple of years ago with Topes.
I hope he can be as comfortable as possible up until the time, and go gently then. <3
I'm really sorry banana. This part is never easy. Send Kitty a hug from me (and also have one for yourself (if you'd like it) 🫂)
‘Peel here’ is the biggest scam in the food products industry. Why do they troll us so.
Last night I couldn't do it. I just couldn't! I found myself with all the cardboard peeled off and meat still completely encased in plastic.
If even the Peeler cannot do it, no one can.
Yes. I totally agree. I stab it then wrap it in glad wrap. Defeats the purpose but fuck it I'm old I ain't got time to fight with packaging. Give me my food now.
Frankfurt packs and everything else.
I keep scissors near the kitchen just for that reason if a knife can’t do it.
Keep a cheap stanley knife lookalike in the kitchen drawer or utensil bucket/stand - cut the corner and then peel. I got mine from officeworks for about a dollar I think but that was a while ago. Damn useful little item. I cbf with those absurd little corner tabs etc.
Always nice to wake up to a kitty who is more interested in relentless headbutting than food.
Also the last 'wedding' surprise dropped. Have to do some cooking for 8 people. Bro + SIL + her family are dropping around after their little tour around the surf coast to pick up the cat tomorrow. Think I'll just do veg spring rolls.
Remember, 50% invoice up front and 50% after delivery of services.
Thinking i might play the long game here.
SIL is a good cook my mind is slowly gravitating towards something in that direction heh.
And 13 on Friday. I get back from Brisbane (where it's been in the high 20s) on Wednesday, RIP 🫠
Aaaaaaaagh.
Family dinner degenerated into fight, again. Dad picked his side, again, and it isn’t me.
I don’t know what I’m doing wrong
Probably nothing wrong, just wrong in old man's eyes.
Not sure about your family but in mine and my wife's, having differing opinions to the older generation is equivalent to treason.
Hope it settles for you.
oh noes.
I had a fight too with fam tonight I have no advice :(
Time to put bhut jolokia in the springies.
Urgh, that sounds so horrible. I would feel very abandoned if that happened to me. I’m sorry it’s happening to you.
I just passed a certificate exam woohooooo I was so stressed about passing, not because of the cost of it, but because of the shame it would bring. I'd have had to tell my team, and other colleagues, and my family. But added benefit is that I will get the exam fees fully reimbursed!! WINNING already today!!!
Omg. This might be a little tmi but it makes a good story. This is what happens when you teach your kid good manners.
All via text.
Her: These dumplings are so good
Me: That's good
A little while later
Her: HELP I HAD A POO AND IT LEFT SKID MARKS. WHAT DO I DO?
Me: Wipe off as much as you can with toilet paper
Her: IT'S INSIDE THE WATER
Then I get sent a picture of a toilet complete with offending marks.
Me: Where are you?
Her: At the dumpling place
Me: Leave it. Run. Don't forget to wash your hands
Her: OK
Me: ok
She wouldn't mind me tell yous this because she has a great sense of humour.
Most restaurant toilets I've been to have a toilet brush but when they don't it is indeed cover-your-face-with-hoodie mortifying. Godspeed to your daughter's reputation.
I know for a fact if there was a brush she would've used it. When the picture was loading I thought "dear God I do not need to see soiled underwear" I was ready to tell her to "abandon them".
Tbh if they don't they're kinda bringing it onto themselves. Like how southern cross doesn't have bins. Obviously if it's at a maccas, it's probably going to get nicked, but at a dumpling joint it'd probably last for a while
Dumping bleach in and letting it sit tends to remove all evidence with no scrubbing, but who would carry that? It’s impractical and dangerous. Even those hardcore white wearers who bring it for stain removal have it in the form of bleach pens.
(It’s also terrible for the environment. Oops.)
No foul. That’s on the restaurant for not supplying toilet cleaner or a toilet brush.
Edit: Ps. Just so you know bleach also creates dangerous gas when mixed with urine so leaving it in the toilet bowl could be dangerous if the next person lets the yellow mellow or little kids use it in the night. And don’t clean litterboxes with it
As I was reading the transcript I wasn’t sure what I was walking into and where it was heading.
Massive hunger incoming again but my hosts will be away for dinner and I can eat leftovers with abandon. And I have bought a little instant noodle cup for extra snacks. And maybe tomorrow I will get some groceries while I'm out and about. They'll be out for dinner again so I might make some dins for myself and extra for them. Fried rice maybe. But first I'll check if they're okay with my using their kitchen. I know some people are picky about this stuff.
E: I'm overhearing one of them talk to a friend of theirs on the phone, ::: spoiler bla bla bla explaining positive reinforcement and how to stop being so unnecessarily harsh and critical of their slightly hyperactive and constantly inquisitive grandson, and how to celebrate and support him instead so that he naturally adjusts (I met this kid too and sat and played with him for a while). And to be more realistic about their own parenting successes and failures. And how to have good relationships with adult children who were difficult when young, how to have healthy but respectful boundaries with them when they have their own children and decide to raise them a different way...
Hearing her explain it in a way my parents generation and cultural background can understand, and skilfully countering resistance ("isn't that spoiling the kid", "these are just western things") is making my heart melt and also a bit emotional for what I never had with my own family growing up... It's very surprising because in a number of other ways this lady is quite uptight and conservative. I know she's one of the few people my mum makes an effort to stay in touch with, maybe someday I could suggest that my mum talk to her about her own continuing conflicts ... :::
Had to make a decision on what to feed the 8 people coming tomorrow.
It will be marathon dim sims (heh) with homemade hawt chilli salt and sauce, soy sauce sprinkled w/ home chilli flakes. half deep fried, half steamed. Maybe a sneaky sausage roll.
my mind is at rest.
Those marathon dim sims are pretty decent though. If be happy with them
Catto didn't believe me the wattle birds are pretty aggressive when he decided to do an explore.
Happy Public Holiday for a parade I'm not even sure still happens but probably does!
Things I never managed while living in Melbourne (and probably never will now) and sort of regret a little:
I've only done one of those.. formula one on race day many years back. I fell asleep with my feet up on the fence. I learned that day that unless you're in the stands with the big TV's showing you what's going on it's friggin boring.
Werribee gorge hike this morning. Damn it's pretty and slightly taxing on the legs.
Also when making pizzas for dinner today I mixed some harrisa paste into the pizza sauce.
It was divine.
Always great entertainment at the rope section
There were A LOT of people dressed inappropriately. My son and I had a bit of a laugh at a few.
One lady was cracking it at her partner and I swear the dude was contemplating his life choices.
Definitely going back again.
Fuck it, I'm starting daylight savings early. It's now 5:30. What even is time anyway, I'll make up my own time zone.
Aww crap. It’s this weekend isn’t it? I totally forgot about it.
Treating myself to a cafe brekkie nearby. The coffee is unsurprisingly blah but the food is affordable! $10 for a decent slice of housemade quiche with goats cheese, spinach, asparagus and local mushrooms, a decent serving of baby spinach leaves and a nice tomato chutney. And this is an out of the way place in a fancy suburb. Wouldn't find that in Melbourne I think.
Yes. Yes you do.
The op shop was still open! managed to score a Gorman linen jumpsuit for $13 - I love looking up the things I buy from op-shops to see how much it cost originally and this one was $250!
Wow, what a bargain! Which op shop was this?
Salvos Abbotsford!
I think I might come inside and have a sit down with a cold one. 🍻
I have pavloved myself to do housework with a cold one. I am doing housework.
I have not moved since posting this comment, however, I must make the journey to the front door to accept the multiple pizzas inbound.
What a beautiful day. In the words of Dusty Springfield I just don't know what to do with myself 🎶
Neighbour just texted me the following 'Hey man, feel like drinking?'
He's kind of loaded and has a fine selection of booze. See y'all next time.
I feel like going out because it’s mid-autumn festival and staying in doesn’t feel right. I think I will have ramen with fried chicken in the city.
Aw yee that sounds like an amazing idea! Ramen is so damn good 🤤
It's a nice day too! Treat yourself! 💜
It's such a beautiful day 💗 and I noticed the four o'clock seeds have sprouted. 😀🌱
24 days until moving day. Cannot wait.
🤞🏻
Fuck it’s hot outside. Can’t wait for summer to fuck off already but it’s gonna be a long one unfortunately. Standard operating temps 12-24C°
For real. People crying about the cold couple months ago. Today is fucking glorious!
I think it’s 29 tomorrow do bunker up and keep cool!
Yessss. If we could cap it at 26 that would be great. My north facing apartment gets awful in the summer.
My room has full sized windows on the north and east side so I’m absolutely boiling during the day and the AC doesn’t work very well either 😠
WHY AM I AWAKE
Even the cats were telling me to stfu and go back to sleep, too damned early for this shit.
I have trained them well
I think I’ve had too much coffee and too little sleep.
Nice day out there. I'm going to see how much digging/brick removal I can get in before the sun gets too strong and/or I collapse from exhaustion.
Digging out old brick lined garden beds? I know alll the tricks! (Had to yoink some very well built old ones for landscaping purposes)
I find it really hurts to disassemble someone else's good craftmanship. Always hope that what goes there instead will be equally well built (but often isn't).
Digging out badly laid brick paving to turn a courtyard into garden beds. It's laid with sand, in a circular pattern that leaves large gaps between the bricks, so it is not difficult to pull them out, just work moving all the bricks.
As much as I like online shopping you're absolutely nuts if you don't go into JB hi-fi in person and ask what they can do on price, particularly on any accessories. Discount every time.
I find JB hi-fi to be such a horrible place to shop I'd rather pay more just to avoid having to go anywhere near the place.
JB Hi-Fi has fantastic deals and has more stuff than other places. But man is that place so overstimulating.
If you can find someone without waiting for hours.
Happy Friday. I’m going to have a nice chill day
Aww man, just saw Michael Gambon has passed. Just rewatched Wives and Daughters and Perfect Strangers, and both his performances were brilliant. I especially loved his take on The Squire, he played the hidden depths of that character and captured his relationship with Molly perfectly.
He will always be Philip Marlowe to me. ( Dennis Potter is my second fave teleplay writer)
here's the tune from the series " Am I right or am I right" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9xbOurdrSM
So I got another package from Ukraine, this time a patch to support the forces and this package had an interesting stamp. 🤭
Hahahahahah! Pity it's not real, I'd probably buy that if it was a real stamp
Only working 4 hours today, and I don't start until midday.
Fantastisch!!
What a beautiful day. That is all.
I subscribed to Aussie Enviro and maybe that bird I saw was an eastern koel. It has the spots I saw but also has the ‘eyeliner’ stripe out from its eyes that I got a split second glimpse of. It did have a loud piercing call (which was what caught my attention in the first place) but I’ve forgotten the exact sound.
Maybe I can buy some cheap binoculars and stalk birds through my bedroom window
I would be ecstatic if we get koels here. Their calls are one of the things I miss most from home.
The Bird of the Year poll is running on the Guardian at the moment if you're into birds, you can vote for your favs.
It wasn't this one was it?
Honeyeaters can be brownish and have the eyeliner stripe.
The streak was similar, but I strongly remember the spots. They made me curious about what the bird was
Exercises were completed earlier and then we went to the beach. We love going to Altona beach (I grew up around there so it's familiar old turf to me and the kids love it). At the last minute, after a miscommunication between Mr Peeler and I, we ended up at Williamstown. It cost me $10 to park there! Apparently you have to pay at Altona too now. The kids and I usually catch public transport but Mr Peeler was coming along and he isn't great with PT, mostly refuses to use it and prefers to drive everywhere. The beach itself was as average as I remember. I stubbed my toe on a rock and fell over, grazing my hand on another rock. There were some sea creatures and mussels of interest to Miniest (it makes her day to see a little crab or two). Now washing all the towels and togs 🤦🏻♀️

I've been watching telly pretty much my whole life
and yet I still have trouble understanding so many tv shows or movies I see.
Like the Singing Detective. Over the space of years I had watched it 4 times and even read the teleplay. Only when I noticed Philip's different fictional narratives had the same themes did I figure it out.
Anyone else watch stuff and have no clue?
Yeah, honestly I usually can't remember the characters'names until I've watched 5+ episodes and usually have trouble remembering back stories and context for the first season or two
I thought today would be a lovely day to finally go in to town and have a wander around the NGV at Fed Square, I've been wanting to for months but haven't managed it.
I forgot that the the public holiday was for the GF parade. So many people on this train and I doubt I'll be able to get across from Flinders to Fed Square.
I have failed both as a Melburnian and a (fairly lapsed but once keen) Collingwood supporter.
Bracing myself for chaos. I might try to head up St Kilda Rd instead.
Ooh, apparently the parade goes somewhere different now, they all got off at Jolimont. Hope it goes well, good day for it.
There's some weird shit going on over at the other dt. So glad I moved over here.
jmsle is using their unpaid day off to smoke meth
While loitering in a shopping centre
Hahahha they're losing their mind 😂
I suspect this is a previously banned person with a new account. I vaguely remember a troll who worked retail and absolutely hated the customers.
It's so weird that's it's written in point form.
Just swapped my 2 monitors over for 1 new monitor.. going from dual monitors to a single monitor is weird. Add to that the new monitor is curved and I've never had a curved monitor. Very weird.
Jeez it's crisp though.
I had 2 monitors for about a month and a half before I whacked it with something by accident and it died. Going back to 1 monitor really sucked cause I do a lot of things where I need a secondary window up with info and context on things. Then I upgraded to a small curved monitor which has a worse picture quality bus is decent enough. I don't think I could go back to 1 screen now though, I've integrated it into my game flows so much now. I was even considering upgrading to a 3 screen system after I was gifted a new monitor, but I don't have much of a use of even the desk space for it
I much prefer the curved monitor over 2 monitors, not having a seam in the middle is much nicer. I don't really like three monitors for most situations - you can't actually focus on that wide a distance, so you have to turn your head to move from one to another, and for most things it works better to just change between windows. Moving the mouse pointer across three monitors is also pretty annoying.
:)
My boringness continues.
I watched a video of a shell collection, again. It was very nice. And I watched a video on competitive jigsaw puzzling. 😂 I never even knew such a thing existed until a few weeks ago. It was both boring and interesting at the same time ( I kept yelling out better strategies ...lol )
Ted Cat came when I called and cuddled my hand. 😀💗😸
Aw Ted Cat, really on the charm offensive. Has Bill improved a bit at all? Poor guy must've been feeling invaded upon.
Bill and Ted need to do this thing. I love them both :)
If anyone else is wondering whether their ceiling fan is set for summer or winter, it is clockwise for winter, anti-clockwise for summer.
Clockwise looking from top or underneath?
From where you look at it.
I'll be honest, I'm just posting this to see how Boost is at text editing. It was my only problem with Jerboa. Seems good. Huzzahs!
Boost is ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Mmm French toast cravings satisfied!
Dins round at my sister's place. Her adult son brought out some cadbury's marvellous creations chocolate for dessert. The cheapskate. For the first time in my life I've eaten fizzy chocolate. The actual choc was still cheap shit. I did quite enjoy the fizzies embedded within.
Lindt, Aldi or Whittakers are all better. Cadbury is hardly chocolate anymore, I would call it confectionary, not really chocolate.
Yes, I found that dark/milk sort maybe the best of a bad bunch. Finding out about good high end choc has spoiled me for life I think. Easter egg choc is unbelievably bad tasting to me nowadays.
Imgur won’t let me upload on mobile and even after getting the app it’s trying to force me to sign in. No thank you imgur. I do not wish to provide you with my phone number.
Can you upload images directly off your phone without any hassles? Or does that burden Lemmy’s hosting/cost them money (idk but you know what I mean)
Also can that dox you with metadata or something
And does Lemmy own your image then
"Lemmy" is not a company in that context. It is the software we are using to run aussie.zone. Technically all of aussie.zone belongs to @Lodion (the domain and server were all set up by him). I've known him for over 20 years though so I think I am qualified to answer this.
He is working on the philosophy of 'build it and they will come'. And as to costs, he posts a monthly thread in the Meta community outlining what aussie.zone costs to run. People have donated enough money to keep it online for a few months ahead. It isn't free to run aussie.zone, but the monthly costs are still under $100. Yes, it costs money to host your photos, but it isn't much on the scale we are working at. At the end of the day, it is the users who are funding the ongoing costs of the site, so we have no need to advertise to you or turn you into a product. The site pays for itself.
Under the hood, Lemmy uses an off-the-shelf program called pict-rs to actually host images. It's pretty neat, and will allow you to simply paste a photo into the middle of your comment. It is super easy to use. Pict-rs will strip out the metadata from the photo before putting it in the files directory for Lemmy to share to the web.
As to ownership of copyright, I'm not a lawyer, so take this answer with that in mind. The setup of aussie.zone is clearly a service to users, and you should retain copyright ownership of your photo. We wouldn't have a leg to stand in if we went to court and tried to claim to own any of the photos uploaded here by others. By uploading it, you are giving us permission to host it. You are free to revoke that permission (tell me the photo url and I'll delete it from the server for you) if you wish.
Ultimately, we are a pair of computer nerds with full-time day jobs and families and Lemmy is not our source of income. I can't see running it ever being something done for profit.
You are doing a great job Nath. Thanks for the detailed response ❤️
Thanks for the response Nath! I wanted to be sure I wasn’t participating in something that was going to go down the road of taking it from somebody’s pocket or changing things to cover the costs.
That’s great to hear. I was just wondering as I was going to post up some casual original art
When you make a post or comment a row of icons come up above. If you select the 5th one (the little box) it takes you to your photo gallery. Select a pic and press done. It brings you back to your comment and does a spinny thing then some jargon. Press preview below.
@Nath@aussie.zone might be able to answer the rest of your questions.
Thanks. I looked at the photos and they didn’t have any location info so 👍
This is what I mean, where it costs money to host the images on the instance server
50 Shades of Nay

The mower is pervasive in my thoughts this morning.🌾🌾🌾🚜
Ugh, nice day to get the greenhouse bed completed, but too warm to be hauling trolleys full of gravel about one-armed
it's definitely too warm for heavy work now. I did some digging and moving bricks early, but moved on to garden bed assembly when it got warmer. I've now declared it break time, I may or may not go out and do a bit of work when it cools down a bit this evening. For now I'm putting my feet up and contemplating how I will be constructing my bamboo cage/support over the garden beds.
I wish I had space for a greenhouse. What do/will you grow in yours?
We mostly use it for overwintering stuff like the miracle berries and extending the growing season for the nightshades (tomato/chillis/eggplant). Got a big fat black 100l tank that lives in there during winter as a heat reservoir, we manage to keep it nicely around 10-15c in single digit temps.
Summer it just gets too damned hot, even with shadecloth and ventilation
Have to get up on the ladder just to check the gutters and things before the incoming rain in a few days.
Chatting to a few people over the last few weeks who've recently bought a house they all complained about water damage and gutters.
What a banger of a day off. I haven't been able to pry myself away from the city because it's just buzzing in here. Definitely a Melbourne city showcase kind of day.
Got on a rental scooter and scooted to DFO South Wharf, then went up along the Yarra to Southgate and switched over to the city side bike track and came back. Loads of people out so I did a lot of fancy slow speed maneuvering to finesse my way through the swarms. I dodged families, footy fans and a random furry. Impeccable day outside.
Scooted back to Docklands, installed my new phone holder and charger in my car and have driven out to Melbourne Bakehouse on Bay St where I currently sit at the street facing window seat with a curry pie, cinnamon doughnut and a strawberry Big M thinking about what to do next.
In G-town for the day. It’s nice here. Been so long since I’ve visited.
Just finished watching the first 3 episodes of Gen V, which is a The Boys spin-off show on Amazon Prime. So far it is excellent! I was a little worried at first because I don't tend to gel with 'teen' shows at my ancient age of 40 but the satire, the characters and the story are hitting nicely.
Break time MOOPSY EP
Going to make today my 1) try and catch up on my knitting, now that I'm working I've fallen behind on my temperature blanket, though I don't think I'll catch up to September/October by today because man this blanket is long and I'm in July. 2) Pack for PAX. Obviously I live in Melbourne so it's not like I'm taking a plane, but it's much easier to book a place in the city where it takes maybe 5 or 10 minute walk to the Convention Centre than coming from home when I have early morning starts.
Where's the best pie bakery you can think of within a couple of hours drive of the CBD?
Closer to home, I know the South Melbourne Bakery does a good one.. I could just go down there I guess.
These people are good. I go to the one in Queenscliff sometimes: https://www.rollingpin.com.au/
They even won a few made up bogus awards. They are good pies though.
Not specifically a pie shop, but Redbeard bakery in Trentham does awesome pies and sausage rolls as well as breads and pastries.
little further afield, but the Glenrowan bake house does a killer beef and jalapeño. Probably call before you go. Or not. It’s really about the journey innit?
Gladysdale Bakery in Yarra Junction do tasty pies (and cakes).
Buddy's Bakery in Melton has won best chunky meat pie a few years in a row. Grab one and head to Bacchus Marsh for some fresh produce or Ballarat for a walk around.
I used to stop at the Kilmore Bakery and tearooms when I was passing through, and the pies and cakes were always excellent.
Melbcat’s allergies are acting up and I’ve been letting her run around like a wild grub to avoid the sulks, but today is the day. She’s getting her face washed whether she likes it or not.

@baconmash@aussie.zone as a chef, let's say you had to go somewhere for lunch in the CBD on Sunday, with a few friends, where would you go?
Highly anticipated post dinner snack of evil orang utan killing instant noodles was a bit of a disappointment. Teaches me to stray from tried and tested indomie and attempt this "fusian" maggi mi goreng cup noodles. They're not terrible but not great either
Tonight is my first night home alone in my life. I've been alone heaps in the day, but never overnight before. Pretty exciting, yet terrifying at the same time though
I'm thinking keeping busy until I go to sleep will help, so I guess tonight is cleaning night (shamefully overdue 😭)
hugs , you'll be fine, just stick to your normal routine 🤗😊
You'll be fine mate. Put on some comfort tv or music and pretend someone is home but asleep.
You got this
It's okay. I'm 16. And how I got here without spending a night alone is just that I only lived with my mum for the first 11 years of my life and she never left me alone overnight, and in residential care you can't be left alone ever at all for any reason
You're aware enough of how you're feeling and you're not afraid of it, that's a great start! Music really helps with regulation, if you need something to zone out to, Drone Zone on soma.fm is great
