Welcome to the Melbourne Community Daily Discussion Thread.
She's gone.
Never gets easy.
Edit: Just want to say I love you folks a lot. Sorry for making things a bit of a downer! But I appreciate everyone of you, thank you for all the love.
Hardest decision ever imo. But when it comes down to a choice between one's own emotions, I think you did the right thing in choosing what's best for the dog. Hugs.
Hugs. It's the toughest decision to ever make. One day they'll make a dog that lives as long as we do, so we never have to say goodbye. 🐾
So sorry to hear that.
It’s so tough having to let them go, I’m sorry for your loss. 💔
hugs, I'm so sorry
Thank you. It's better this way instead of letting her live. Sorry for making this DT sad. 💖💖💖
Condolences mate.
Oh mate, I’m so sorry. Saying goodbye is so damn hard.
🫂
So sorry. It’s so hard to loose a pet.
I'm so sorry, sending you my love and support 💜 hugs
I’m so sorry. You gave her a good life and she was safe when she passed.
💔 It may be the best decision for our furry friends but it doesn't hurt any less because of that. I hope the love and devotion put into that painful decision carries you through the next few days.
Sorry to hear you’ve lost a loved one :(
They’re part of our lives and part of the family.
My condolences. I hope you’re doing ok over there.
Move aside, common people.. we have a business class flyer coming through!
They're not lying when they say estimated.
there's probably a reason for that 😬
It's getting worse. I think it's time. I'm leaving work early.
I know this is a fact of life, but it's a terrible fact and I hate it! Hug your animals for me and tell them landsharkkidd loves them very much.
big hugs
So, I have an interview today, and the HR rep said she'd email me a calendar invite confirming it. I have not received one, so I have sent an email to confirm it.
I'm stressed that it isn't actually booked in, and I'll be travelling across the city for nada. Ugh.
Edit: all good it's confirmed 🤗
Good luck mate 🤞
Good Luck. 🤞🏻
call them too?
Good luck! 🤞🏻
Shit that's annoying
I just offered a second round interview for the role I applied for. This one is with the team lead and the CEO and its on thursday. Super nervous but excited.
YESSS YOU GOT THIS HOT STUFF 🔥 💜
Flying home tomorrow but I didn't do my laundry maths right so here I am at the laundromat.. at least I won't need to do washing when I get home!
Home for the nice weather. And it's such a nice feeling to get home and there's no housework waiting.😊
I've now made it a habit to tidy up the house as much as I can for a trip 5 or more days long - even if it means I'm up till 2am or am in a sweaty mess. First priority is packing of course, then dishes (including putting them away), overall tidying, bins, vacuum, laundry, and if I have time, new sheets. It's so depressing coming back esp after a longer trip and realising you have so many chores to do...
Meet Petunia. She is served as a 14oz prime rib, medium rare (which actually was more rare). Accompanying her is a creamy garlic mash, broccoli and a garlic sauce. To the side (not pictured) is a smoked Gouda mac and cheese and to drink, a Distinguished Gentleman consisting of bourbon, cherry liqueur and garnished with a cherry and orange peel served over an ice sphere.
Coming shortly is a creme brulee to close out the evening.
I'm still learning things on my watch and the other day I discovered that it wanted to record 10 minutes of non stop walking. No problems I'll do it on a nice day. Well today is that day so I start doing laps around the house with little dog, the kid comes out to see what I'm doing. I explain. Surely it's been 10 minutes now. Head over to her. She pushes a button and then the timer starts. I don't swear in front of my kid but today I did which brought a huge smile to her tonsillitis face.
When I meditate to a timer, I take a few seconds to make sure the timer's running because otherwise that's all I think about while meditating.
I thought it was going but not showing. It said "ready set go". The confusion happened when it congratulated me for achieving my moving goal but the whole time I'm thinking this better be working. Now I know what to do in future.
This cherry blossom thing normally goes early Oct. Usually clockwork.
Everything is fine.
My lawn is still hibernating. I guess it’s fine? Haven’t mowed for like 2 or 3 months
So 2 weeks ago I saw a car I wanted. THE car I wanted. Well, not the colour, but the rest of it was perfect. This was the one I had been told would take 6-8 months to get. I figured "Cool, but Im not ready yet, and it'll be gone by the time I am ready". had a look Friday and guess what was still there? Called them, asked if they could hold it till October. They could. Took it for a spin, loved it. Chucked down a deposit. Job done. I need to figure out the money because we still dont know how bigger loss the stupid Mazda is gonna take. But its nice having a plan and a path out of this bullshit situation. Im wayyyy less stressed because I may not be at the finish line, but I can see it in sight.
Fingers bloody crossed you get the car you want, you need a break after so much shit luck in the automobile dept
Nap with the cat has been had, now I must turn my attention to what to have for dinner. I'm real lazy right now so everything feels like too much effort lol
Must have been happy and exhausting after today.
Maybe do something simple but satisfying if you’re feeling the way you are now.
I just sent a donation to the wonderful artisan in Mexico who designed the pattern for the masks I make. 😷😀
I don't normally dream much, now I've dreamt twice in 24 hours. This virus is literally messing with my mind. Once about Ed Sheeran. I'm not even a fan of his stuff. Once about cleaning some woman's kitchen so I could help her study law. I don't know about law.
Do people really dream about stuff like this every day? How do you not get distracted thinking about your dreams all the time?
I find that dreams when you are sick are so much more crazy and weird, not what I normally dream.
I am not doing a late night chip or hotdog you ppl can't have onee I'm sorry :(
Tomorrow is a new day.
late night food probably isn't the best idea anyway
and yes, it is a new day :)
Might not apply, but went on a date on Saturday night that surprised us both about how well it went. Online dating, and just dating in general for me I am super cynical but we just clicked. We've been texting constantly since then and it's nice. 4 years since my last 'real' date/partner. 6 years since divorced.
It's nice to just meet someone you get on well with.
that's really nice 🤗😊
Yeah it is. I've been divorced for 5 years now and also have troubles just connecting with people (I'm demi-sexual).
Lots of dates in the past which didn't work well. It's just nice to meet someone good.
Found out my best mate is moving to QLD to be closer to his dad. I'm actually pretty devo about it, but I'll at least have a very good excuse to go north for a holiday lol
lieb?
Nah, not mein liebe, he is safe here at home with me lol.
A coworker from way back, became my bestie during and after our stint at the old workplace. Been mates for 6 years, helped me break up with my ex, knows me better than I know myself. He's a good egg, and I'll miss him terribly.
I'll just have to call and text him more to make up for the distance.
Brisbane, so easy to visit at least. I told him he'll need to find a place to rent so I can come crash haha
It sure is. It still always sounds preposterous to me when people from Europe casually drop phrases like ‘went to Rome for the long weekend’ I know it’s way better than it was. For my parents generation air travel was hideously expensive, even overseas phone calls were expensive. But yeah it’s still really far. Hoping for someone to invent another supersonic jet. I reckon there be a market for it even if it was more expensive.
Nahh I feel the same. I wish that I could just take a day trip to another country like Europe, or like being able to go through a few states like US. But no, takes like 2 hours just to get to the CBD.
I used to take the train to so many places. I think my fave train ride was Davos to Tirano. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhaetian_Railway
My parents have like $500 or so casino/resort credits left to use before tomorrow morning so we're hitting the fancy steakhouse tonight to blow it all on one meal. The cow I'm gonna eat is going to be so fancy it was once the chef's child's personal pet. My steak will have had a name and had little birthday parties with party hats each year, and its own Instagram account with TENS OF THOUSANDS of followers.
That story mooved me to tears and is udderly heartbreaking.
I'm thinking that cow won't be the best eating if it has had multiple birthday parties. Might be ok for a slow cooked smoked BBQ meal, but for steak you want one of the chef's child's personal pet's offspring.
Are you going to have cocktails and dessert? 😺
I just wanna reiterate it in case the universe needs reminding. But HOW GOOD IS THIS SUN.
(let's just not think about el nino and summer for now mmmkay)
The sun is awesome. It would be a cold, dark world without it, and it gives us a sense of direction. What would we revolve around if we had no sun?
What would we revolve around if we had no sun?
Cats?... but then they themselves are drawn to the sun, so your point stands.
I felt really weird today. Like this almost disconnect from my body. Like it feels like when I have hang overs so it's like lethargic and spaced out. Almost slow. But I took meds, and have eaten and drank water so I don't know very weird.
I also mentioned maybe a month or so ago about being worried about my dog. Everything has been okay, but today she's like breathing slowly and doesn't react to when my sister calls her. I don't know, I saw what happened to my cat, and I fear that it's happening again. She's old but it still sucks.
Nipped up to bunnings on lunch break, half of cochrane's road is shut off as they have the crane in at Morris Moor.
And I TELL YOU THIS...it was a genuine pleasure riding back how many tailgating, illegally close passing, abuse hurling methed-out tradie shithuggers missed the goddamn detour signs and had to do painful, painful 5 point turns to go back from whence they came while I skated past the block on the footpath blowing kisses.
What is it about soup that always makes you wish you'd planned something better for lunch, but then when you eat it, you remember just how good soup is and wonder why you don't eat it more often. 🤷♂️ I must say the cheese and bacon rolls paired particularly well with my leek and potato soup today.
Today's a bit of a chill and housework day. I had to go to the butcher because I ran out of time on Thursday, and made the mistake of forgetting how absolutely gigantic my preferred butchers chicken Kiev's are and ended up getting double the amount I needed which ended up at like 60 bucks 😭. I was on a bit of a time limit and didn't get to clean up my breakfast mess before I had to dash, but thankfully the roomies aren't home so nobody noticed
I've done most of the house work I need to today and the dreaded washing is just about over once I take my jacket out tof the washing machine and hang it up. So I think I get to just relax in this somewhat okay weather for the rest of the day! I'm thinking about a nap in the hammock, but I'm worried about the spider situation out there
Edit: oh actually the winds quite chilly I'm going back inside
I'm sorry mate gentle hug
Exercises have been done, but I must remember to not do tummy and core exercises after dinner. Trying to exercise a belly which has recently been fed is not very bright of me.. both motivation and ability are severely diminished!
A question for your Monday night - how do people manage to push through and get their work done?
I cannot get started on my uni work because of an overwhelming "paralysis" feeling where I cannot push myself to do anything.
It's going to sound completely backwards and dumb, but you just sit down and put fingers to keyboard (pen to paper) and write. Even if you just write "blaaaaaaaaaaah"
You have to force yourself to just do it. I find it helps to visualise it in my head as an actual brickwall, and envision myself taking it down brick by brick. It helps me do chores.
That, or a hard deadline (like an inspection) will scare me into doing the chore regardless of the thickness of the wall.
Encountered this feeling before.
As daunting as it is, make a start and slowly work at it bit by bit and you’ll get there in the end.
Take the first step and plan or start on the work.
For me personally, I break it down until it's manageable. Seriously, it can be broken down into something as small as writing your name and date at the top of the page.
Also a good reminder for anyone and everyone is your first attempt can look like a toddler drew a picture for Mummy and Daddy.
I usually do the pomodoro method, which is doing a task in 25 minutes with a 5 minute break. Or I go "okay I'll do the task for 5 minutes, if after that 5 minutes I can't do it anymore then okay, I'll try again next time" most of the time, I fly past the 5 minutes and end up doing it. But I totally understand the paralysis feeling.
My old saying was 'the first word is the hardest".
You got this just write a few down and rest will manifest.
I have significant recurring difficulty with this. Meds help me lift my baseline, but aren't everything. Some tips that have helped me regardless of meds, and could apply to anyone is - find something fun or rewarding about it. Even if it means turning it into a game (break it down into the smallest task and ramp it up like you're smashing the early levels of a game). Envisage how relieved you will feel when it's done so it feels like a worthwhile goal - though don't get stuck in the fantasy! I also recommend others tips here about wearing something different/creating a separate space for work, and writing out tasks and dot points by hand.
Usually what has the most impact, though, is the adrenaline of a deadline :(
Just start, with anything at all. Make a bullet point list of what to include, ideas, connections, a flow chart, sketch; it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t have to be in computer. I find that writing by hand seems to be easier way to break the block. It feels less official?
Recommendation 2 is gonna sound kooky. Put shoes on. Or whatever you would normally wear out of the house. Fosters some kind of subconscious ’doing something’ mode.
What I should be doing; My assignment
What I have been doing: Scrolling, watching reality tv, chatting on dating apps, looking for a new bed frame that I have no money for, playing sims
I’m thinking back to the GFC in 2008 and swine flu but weirdly don’t remember much. For me they didn’t hugely affect my life and were so long ago they’re like a mental blip.
I know swine flu was contained fairly quickly (unlike covid) but for the average person how do economic conditions now compare to what they were in 2008?
Apologies in advance for a wall of text. Will try to put it under a spoiler.
Thanks for this. It all sounds about right. I was a grown adult through all of it, just really don’t remember much.
(By it not affecting me much I meant - I was already a hermit! I was already poor!)
I honestly don't remember much (the ADHD mixed with PTSD really fucks with the memory). But I was 13 and that was the year my parents separated. So I can't remember the economic issues at the time, I just remember having to live in a unit instead of a house when they separated. Dad was still in the old house until maybe mid-way through 2009?
But yeah 2008 was weird. Starting year 7, so moving to a new school, and then at the end of the year having to move schools again because of the separation.
Time to get my arse off the couch and go to work! I have a shadow tonight who is apparently annoying as all hell so that should be fun...
Well there you go.
The paqui one stupid chip is being recalled due to adverse reactions.
For those who love cats and candles - what do you do to ensure that your cat can't touch the candle? The fluffy kitty in my life can't be trusted, but I'd love to be able to light a candle of an evening.
For my cat it was a learn from your mistakes situation, turned my back for 2 seconds and the silly bugger had a burnt a whisker or two. Now he doesn't go near them, he just sort of admires from a distance.
do you want the smell or the light?
Smell you can replicate with melts, light you can get in LED variants.
All my old kitties weren't too keen on open flames.
You could put the candle in a glass candle holder.
Ooh, just saw candle cages and lanterns. Just need to make sure it's weighted enough that he can't push it over.
Eel on rice with some chilli crisp 🐍
Interesting, what do you think the eel tastes most like? I didn't even know you could eat eel until today
I reckon it tastes roughly halfway between snake and bacon. It's the fish red meat. I really like it. Smoked eel is scrumptious - can get it at Vic market sometimes - which doesn't need cooking. Just flake it into a salad or onto rice or pasta with your choice of sauce. Fresh eel cooked in fat has a crispy skin, cooked in water it's more gelatinous if you like it like that. Either way it goes very well with strong flavours of spice and sauce. Tinned eel is more like the cooked in water version. One of my absolute favorite dishes is crumbed and fried sections of eel on the bone, served with a sharp vinaigrette dipping sauce.
Most of the eel sold in Victoria comes from the lakes in the western district and has been eaten since forever by everybody. Which lakes are now full of water again, so I reckon there will be local eel on sale over the summer this year and next. Tinned eel should be available from asian grocers.
Let me know if you find some fresh eel on sale, and I can give you some hints on preparing it anglo style if that's your jam. There are some traps for the unwary.
Baby eels are called elvers, and any whitebait recipie can be used to turn them into food. And I recommend that you do so - they are seriously yum. Crunchy and savory and full of flavor.
eel tastes most like?
It can occasionally be an electrifying dish.
Hmm. It's kind of like white fish of some type, but a little less fishy flavour? It's also really soft/delicate. This one was tinned in quite a sweet sauce so tough to be objective on the flavour. Not my favourite thing, but would eat it again

Who's watching the tennis with me? It's getting spicy
Just hopped into bed and the cat keeps softly licking my arm and then very softly nibbling at it. No idea what he's up to, but I can see the headline now, "lonely shiftworker eaten alive by beloved cat in the night".
Can anyone recommend a place where I can borrow tools for a one time use? I'm working on the lawn soon and need one-time things like a lawn leveler/soil spreader, pitchfork, crimper etc. Really not interested in purchasing one even second hand just to use it once :/
Oh I actually know this! There's a thing called a Tool Library. There's one in Brunswick, I don't know about other locations. But it's basically a "library" so to speak where you can borrow tools for diy, gardening, that sort of thing. I don't know if that is too far for you, but I know that exists.
Kennards has a bunch of stuff too.
Good news, if you want your led light up Christmas reindeer they are now in stock at Big W!
Too early it's just rud(olph).
Christmas food items are on the shelves at Colesworth. Because it’s September.
Whenever I see someone recommend Much Ado About Nothing (1993), I feel like it should come with a warning. I see it come up in a lot of period drama comedy recommendations, and while the film is good and funny, if you don't understand iambic pentameter you're in for a very unfunny time.
Same goes for The Hollow Crown (Henry IV adaptation), excellent mini series, but again good luck following along if you don't understand iambic pentameter.
O God, that I were a man. I would eat his heart in the market-place.
I love that play so much, it has triple puns, triple!!
Comedy? Some pretty scary stuff happens . It's between waves of the plague, there are wars, and there is hell to consider!!
Oh, I wasn't saying the Hollow Crown was a comedy, more another example of a good watch but only if you understand the dialogue.
Edit: Just occurred to me you're probably talking about Much Ado About Nothing... I think most people aren't thinking about what's going on beyond the whole soldiers arriving from war turns to hijinks situation.

Does anyone have recommendations for couriers they use to ship things interstate?
I'm looking to buy a device second hand from interstate. Some may come in a box some might not but it can weigh up to 20kg and in a (relatively) decent sized box ~(70cmx40cmx40cm)
Are there services that pick up from the persons house or would they have to go into a place to ship it off? They tend to stay on the market for a while so I'm sure the person wouldn't mind.
I tried looking into backloading but it seems like too much trouble for minimal savings. Looked at courier sites and wasn't sure if I was doing it correctly but it was estimating ~$80 which is actually not too bad. Would much rather go off of recommendations. My concern is also payment, I essentially have to trust the other party to ship it off once paid.
I've used couriers please of all things, but again it depends on your franchise.
Thank you, I'll see their prices and how they operate to see if it fits the requirements
I'm doing an on line shop and noticed all the champignon mushies are sold out and the exotic mushies are still available 🥺
Watched Past Lives. It was like a modern update of Wong Kar Wai, dripping with tension and beauty and a throughly atmospheric soundtrack unsurprisingly scored by two members of Grizzly Bear. I dunno whether I'd recommend it to others. I think they need to have lived through at least a bit of the contemporary immigrant experience for the film to hit its most powerful notes.
