Call this a hot take, but I don't think we are a secular nation. We are de facto a Christian nation. This isn't a good thing.
If you look at the laws we have, from no selling alcohol on Sunday (the Lord's day), to anti-lgbtq legislation, to what our social conservatives draw upon for their arguments, it comes back to Christian fundamentalist politics.
If you are Muslim or Jewish, you are much more at risk of being the target of hate crimes than a Christian.
The separation of church and state is something we are still trying to do. Even Jimmy Carter, a deeply Christian man, pointed to Christian fundamentalism being the greatest threat to America.

Actually this is a great time to talk about HIPAA, but what isn’t a great time to talk about the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act?
The important thing for Americans to know is this law says they can’t share your information without your express consent, and they have to give you your records in a timely manner when you ask for them.
So if you go to your doctor’s office and ask for all your records, including test results and scans, they have to provide them.
If they share your data without your consent (read those documents carefully who gets it), they have to start dancing to avoid jail time.
Rules for thee, not for me.

When a woman is pregnant she has an extremely important and difficult decision to make that will effect her life in a fundamental way for at least two decades but probably permanently... trying to manipulate someone making such an important decision because of your bullshit holy book (that doesn't even care about this) is morally fucking reprehensible. I've spoken with people who have been unable to talk about being forced into conversations with these asshats without breaking down in tears - these fuckers inflict deep trauma.
In a few decades these fucks will be viewed in the same general light as eugenicists and we can't get there fucking soon enough.

I think this is a horrible idea but just because I know many of y'all only read the headline: the proposal is NOT for a "database" in the sense that the federal government is going to start directly keeping track of pregnancies. Rather, it's for a website where you can find motherhood-related information and a "database" of service providers. The "tracking" part is apparently that you can register on this website, and the gov reserves the right to then keep this (voluntarily surrendered) personal data to "reach out" to moms and "help" them.
Of course none of this would offer any info on abortion. Because this is coming from Alabama.

It’s called having the hospital draw blood from the birth mother and the baby immediately after birth, not to mention all of the blood tests ordered by OBGYNs to check for pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes before the baby is born. Trust me, the feds know I was pregnant in 2012 and 2014. Now here is the real kicker, why is my mom fighting me to prevent having my kids added to Ancestry.com? Oh, because maybe the rest of the family will realize some distant relative raped me in my sleep. I’ve told them this. My husband has admitted it happened to me. The feds keep blood samples from every baby that was born around 1988 and later. Hell, even the feds can help me prove what happened! Who is standing in my way? My mother who wants me to fight for dna in court. Why is that? Because I signed the kids over to her, so that I could join the military years ago. She is literally obstructing justice in a rape case, and one day when she is dead, and the kids are old enough to submit dna themselves, they’ll finally understand what happened.
Anyway, the feds already know who is pregnant and when, unless some woman never visits a doctor, has her baby outside of a hospital, and keeps her children from ever visiting a pediatrician. They draw blood, too! My childhood was filled with blood draws, and my pediatrician kept mentioning how it would also help him with his report. You all are worried about the feds knowing who was pregnant? My mother apparently had medical professionals discussing her pregnancy after my pediatrician’s medical project on dna and blood types. Nice, huh?
