Is it just me or did Lemmy suddenly became more active now that Sync for Lemmy is released?
I don't know if this is just a placebo effect, but it feels like there's a lot more socialization and faster upvotes in the past hour Sync was released.
Sync drastically reduces the barrier to using Lemmy for sure.
I appreciate the vanilla Lemmy experience but Sync has my muscle memory / usage habits after all. And it fixes some of my UX complaints that seem mildly annoying but enough to disengage me from the browsing session.
Yes! Long press on thumbnails was the #1 reason I just couldn't get into the other apps.
If those excellent reddit community admins come our way, we will be set.

Spez's biggest mistake was sending all the world class 3rd party developers working to make Reddit better straight to his biggest competitor.

Sync has nice features that let you customize your experience pretty nicely. It feels like using Reddit which for some of us that migrated is a great experience.
On top of that, it is fully functional in a tablet mode style with larger devices and it just works really well. The layout of the app also makes it seem a little easier on the user to add instances and accounts. There is also a migrate button, scheduled theme modes, and other nifty little tucked in features. Give it a try if you like it but the Ultra subscription to help the dev. 100% worth it.
Your best bet is to really just give it a try. For me, it's about the polish and UI customizations.
Sync makes Lemmy feel like a better version of Reddit, or an old school version of Reddit. It's great for Lemmy and old Reddit users.
I definitely feel the same way. I had been on Reddit since before the Digg collapse. Back when it was mostly nerds and other IT professionals like myself. Lemmy gives a strong wave of nostalgia. Sync for Lemmy makes it a pleasure to use on a tablet. The webpage is alright, definitely serviceable. But Lemmy has strength in the third party apps scene. Sync is the returning champion for my Android tablet. Happy to support his work again.
Was just describing this to family today. I don't know how many times I started to comment on Reddit, only to discard it because I didn't want to deal with the Reddit brain. Lemmy feels like old school Reddit where engagement is good again.
I will definitely be more active as well, there was no app with this much customization. Now that there is much more people will find exactly what they want.
It's the best of both worlds. Young, tight knit community with a mature UX.

Since Saturday lemmy.ml and lemmy.world were not sending content correctly. The problem seems cleared up now.
I’m still seeing some issues but hopefully they celar up soon.
I think it has a lot to do with the algorithm. I don't know what he did but I'm not seeing duplicate posts anymore and I love it. Most things are from the past 24 hours instead of week old posts. Going from connect to sync made a massive difference for me.
It's also such a smoother, less-laggy experience overall. Everything is quick and painless.
I'm also seeing this take place on the desktop site. The Sync admin can't really do anything algorithmically as that isn't supported by the API
He could request top posts in X time frame, like last 4 hours or so and then do manual sorting, but it seems more likely that it's just an influx of users as a result of the app releasing.

new version of lemmy just rolled out across instances that fixes the algorithm too. im not sure this is a sync thing.

Because it has a clean interface and many people were waiting for the app to be released before they jumped on, at least that's the case for me, I used jerboa a bit but is a bit too clunky after being used to sync for so many years
As someone who signed up back when third party apps died for Reddit, this is my first post. I tried a few of the apps for Lemmy, but I couldn't get into it. I tried Sync a couple of hours ago, and it just works. I can see that being the case for others.
I don't know if it's a coincidence or not, but RiF is now completely dead for me, until now I could browse, just not log in, now you can no longer browse on it at all. could be another contributing factor
I'm in the same boat, now that sync is here and works well I'm here contributing. I'm so happy sync still feels like sync and works mostly the same way.

Yeah, unfortunately I went back to Reddit (with a modded Sync Pro) out of habit because the default Lemmy web UI and the other 3PAs weren't as good as Sync for Reddit was. I can finally settle on Lemmy and quit Reddit in the long term now

It's just reddit, but content is spread on multiple sites that talk to one another. There's some issues with the setup, such as content duplication, but as people learn the ins and outs (use crossposts, people), and the feature set upgrades, it should become better.
I call it plausible. The Sync UI is considerably more efficient than the Lemmy web UI. And many of us refugees were 3rd party app users and some of us were Sync users. I have been commenting more since this morning. Surely I am not alone in that?
And Sync in general is far more feature-rich than all the other Lemmy apps I've tried. Connect for Lemmy was the closest with its swipe to upvote mechanic, but it feels very nice to be at home again.
Honestly it's so awesome just having the feel of it back. I remembered why I never bothered with reddit on the PC, trying to bumble around Lemmy gave me a similar ew lol.
Thunder also has swipe gestures on posts/comments for upvote/downvote/reply etc, but I hate that I can't swipe to go back when scrolling comments.

I agree sync is an amazing app, both formerly for Reddit, and now for Lemmy, but huge kudos to the developers of existing Lemmy apps for working hard to make the mobile experience as good as possible for us Reddit refugees. I used connect until sync came out, and noticed it was frequently updated. I'd highly recommend everyone support their favourite app developer(s) in whatever way possible. Thanks Kuro!!

Probably they try to sign up for Lemmy.world and experience technical issues due to ddos, unfortunately.
I don't mind lemmy.world being recommended to newcomers as it's run by an established and reliable admin (so it's unlikely to just disappear), but it might be a good idea to start recommending lemm.ee as an alternative, too.
Their admin is also great, it's also general-purpose, and they are federated with most instances. It would help spread the load a bit, and would shield newcomers from suffering through the frequent attacks .world have been subjected to recently.

Sync defaulted us to it. When trying to add an account, lemmy.world was the easiest one to use.
For a lot of casual users (myself included) we don't know any better or why we would do anything else.

Yes because the shit that shows up inside of sync is the same way that it did on Reddit. For a lot of users, I bet Reddit was sync. The shit that shows up inside the users probably don't care where it comes from.
I'm finding the sync experience far nicer than Jerboa so far, not surprised. Jerboa fails to load comments half the time and I get errors constantly that stop content refreshes.
Not just you because sync is arguably the most usable and pretty Lemmy client and it actually got me to finally make an account because it gives me the closest experience to reddit yet
Lemmy felt buggy AF for me. Web client or Jerboa. Sync for Lemmy is so smooth already, it feels like business as usual to me.
Exactly. With the UI/UX of Sync, it just feels like Reddit again (although with way less activity so far, but it's gotta start somewhere).

This is my first post. Until about noon today RIF was still working for me (except I couldn't log in or do anything that requires)
Now it just says "forbidden" when I load it. I saw a link to this site from the RIF developers site, ended up here and saw the Sync post. I'm never going back!
BTW this app is great! Except it crashes when trying to switch accounts... but I'm sure any of the bugs will be worked out eventually!

I dropped reddit almost immediately once the app left. I still had the app though and would open it to sadness. I tried using Lemmy on the browser but it was awful, the notification today has been amazing.

Can confirm, I'm only here because Sync released. I tried using Lemmy sooner but I only browse from mobile and use a foldable, I couldn't live without fold/2 pane portrait support (I had also stopped using Reddit for the same reasons).
I was waiting for Sync, and just signed up for my Lemmy account today because of it and I can imagine that there are a decent amount of people doing the same. I have no idea as for the actual metrics, just based on seeing relevant posts.
As for the criticisms of the ad portion of the app, I'm happy to ensure a sustainable way the app/site can continue as long as it's clearly communicated and transparent. And I would imagine the dev would have an option for a one time payment to avoid ads, as per the original Sync.

There is now a lifetime option to remove the ads. Bit too expensive for me though, so I'll live with the ads or use Jerboa.
I know I started being active here because of Sync, so I'd assume plenty others did too. Honestly I wish there was a Sync-like frontend for most apps, it's just the perfect experience in my book.

I joined Lemmy during the big migration, but none of the apps I tried felt quite right. And even though I never used Sync for Reddit (I was a relay user), Sync for Lemmy instantly felt polished.

I was an Apollo user on Reddit and have been using Voyager for Lemmy. The experience on my phone ( other than content ) has been near indistinguishable. If I had both apps, I would barely be aware of which one I was in.
Anyway, awesome that people are loving Sync.

That's been my experience. I've been using Jerboa, Connect, Liftoff, and Thunder before this, and activity has been slowly increasing over the past few weeks. Sync releases, and activity increased significantly within hours. Also, I have not touched another client since Sync dropped. I appreciate the effort of all of the other developers making Lemmy apps, but Sync is home. Nothing comes close.
I am here because of sync, but I am also confused. I made a .ml account and not a .world account. Does it matter? Could someone tell me the difference? Thanks.

Boost also still works for me. It's because I'm a moderator of a sub. For whatever reason, that continues to allow access to all of reddit (for now). Once that ends, Reddit will sadly be dead to me.
This is the reason I'm back. Being able to lurk on Reddit scratched the itch just enough that I didn't need an alternative while that worked.

Memmy version in TestFlight is rapidly improving and the dev is really responsive (replying using it as we speak).
Wefwef is a great alternative in the mean time and I’ve used Mlem a bit but prefer the other two.
I use Voyager (wefwef in an app) in Testflight now. I have used Memmy as well, but like Voyager better. Probably because it has pretty much the look and feel of Apollo I used for Reddit. I am curious how Artemis will be, but that one has no open Beta yet. So plenty of choice for iOs.

In the past, it's been Android only. I saw someone comment in the Discord about LJD looking into converting the code to something iOS could use. No idea if they were being funny or whatever, but nobody seemed to laugh or refute that. So maybe he's looking into it? I don't want to get anyone's hopes up though.

The app is great, just like it was on Reddit. But I signed up yesterday for Lemmy and let's just say it's going to be a while before I can ditch Reddit. There's hardly anything on Lemmy in the way of my interests, and the communities seem confusing and fragmented. I'll check in every few months, but as long as Sync still works for Reddit I won't be moving over any time soon.
I know I'll be using Lemmy more now. The mobile web interface wasn't terrible and was leagues better than reddits. But the app brings a much better UX I feel.

Yeah. I'll be honest, Sync has made actually using Lemmy incredibly easy. Way easier to find and subscribe to all the "catalogs" or whatever they're called on Lemmy as well.

Ive been here since July 1st.....Seeing 250 comments on a post and almost 1300 up whatever theyre called lol, this shits finally taking off...LETS GOOO..I loved liftoff but im sorry to say sync is just, well amazing and seamless.

Sync is honestly the only thing that made me aware of Lemmy. I signed up a few days ago, and heard about it weeks ago, but today I can start using it more actively.
I've had Lemmy for months now but never felt like actually posting much because the clients were just not very good. I'll be posting more now that I have Sync, although the prices for premium versions are frankly obscene.

Anecdotally, it became much more active when Reddit switched the API a month ago. The existence of https://old.lemmy.world/ later also helped probably.

I definitely used Lemmy a lot more today than I normally do. Sync for Lemmy is just so much more polished than everything else I have tried using to access Lemmy previously.
I use liftoff now. Is sync an improvement? I find switching between instances to be a bit clunky and having accounts with different instances leads to lots of repeating posts.

I was on Lemmy 2 months ago and haven't been back since. Using Firefox on my phone was just too slow for someone who was spoiled by Baconreader on Reddit.

I didn't particularly like any of the apps for Lemmy, while they all offered some of the features I wanted, none offered all in a single package.
That, coupled with the clunkyness and bugs that come along with the territory of new developers building something for the first time (which is not a knock against them), I just didn't really enjoy trying to use Lemmy.
I'm mainly waiting for Boost, but I like to try the new Lemmy apps hoping to find a great one, and Sync is certainly the best so far, with a robust feature and settings set that does everything I need it to.
So that's why I'm spending a little more time here now, I guess! Lemmy is only as good as the app that acts as it's interface after all, and as the apps improve and become less of a chore to use, so will user retention.

I think lemmy.world had some downtime and they came back up. lemmy.world is one of the biggest traffic drivers.
I'll be on lemm.ee more often since dot world goes down kinda frequently - and it's healthier to spread the load anyway.
I'll check Sync out if I ever start having issues with Thunder. Don't know why it isn't as popular as other apps.
I don't know about activity and I notice lemmy.world is often down andnit wasn't due to the apps. But sync is definitely cleaner and easy to use.
I'll be honest, I still check reddit on my pc (much less than I used to), but mobile was dead to me. Having a decent app for the fediverse makes it much easier to navigate, especially when the app is familiar.
Stupid question maybe, but If i try to submit a new Post with sync it tells me to try again later? Or have i missed sth?

I'd say so, I was using liftoff and it just didn't work as seamless as this beta does so it makes me want to use it more 🤷♂️
I just tried to use reddit via third party app, then got reminded that it's over. Decided to check out whatever still works and found Sync for Lemmy, wondering if it's similar. Turns out, it's even better lol
Ahh so maybe that's why I'm seeing a lot more posts, comments and votes... I've been using Jerboa since I landed here and on the whole I'm fine with it, can anyone who's used both tell me whether there's a big difference between the two?

Just using infinity for Lemmy, idk what's all about that sync-hype. Infinity runs flawlessly.
People are happy because they can use an app again that they have used for up to 10 years.
The hype is because Sync was a long standing and well respected client for reddit, that is now available for Lemmy.
For many users this means they can finally try Lemmy through an interface they know from a dev they trust.
I don't use Sync, or Infinity, but the more the merrier!
I signed up for lemmy when Reddit started pulling it's shit. But I didn't really do anything here until today when sync informed me that the lemmy app was available.

Nope. I've messed around with other apps but nothing comes close to Sync.
Connect for Lemmy has been really good so far, too.

People really seem to be sleeping on Thunder. For me it's by far the slickest of all the Lemmy apps I've tried.
I'm using Jerboa, as I don't want to use a closed source app with In App purchases and Google tracking. It's nice there are so many options!
Jerboa am the way. I used Sync before, but Jerboa had the perfect amount of customization with ease of use. I say that, but I feel hypocritical cause I'm currently testing Sync.
I'm using the open-source Infinity for Lemmy app. I used to use Infinity for Reddit, so I find IfL amazing to use.
Man I really wanted to like Jerboa but it just has such terrible UX. I ended up signing up for Kbin.social as I thought it had the best UI and now I'm back to Lemmy through Sync.

I hadn't created an account til today. I was going to just use sync for reddit with the revanced patch at first but I decided to just ghost reddit until this came out, and now I'm getting my sync fix again lol so far so good, besides there being a bit less content on lemmy vs reddit the experience so far it has been great. Plus, it feels like fewer bots, at least for now, so that's also a major plus.
Yep, same here. Tried a bunch of different apps but never became comfortable with any of them, so I completely stopped using Lemmy, but Sync gave me a reason to come back here.

Me too, I started my download almost immediately after being notified.
Same. There were also lots of server errors in the week after sync stopped working for Reddit so I took some time off.
The sync app is amazing though.
