Bin fuckery with neighbour was avoided.
The cheeky fucker swapped his green for recycling last night (saw it when I got home late).
He brought it in right after pick up this morning too (at like 7 am).
I'll still claim the moral victory.
Aaand home. Banger of a day outside but for now I think I'll just lay down for a bit.
Yay, home!!! Hope the drive was nice and easy!
I have a long, slow cooking day planned today in preparation for a Mexican dinner tomorrow night. I am making carnitas, which is basically pork slow cooked in fat. It will be served in soft tacos, so I will be making an oven-roasted salsa today, then making tortillas and some other accompaniments tomorrow. I am also going to make desserts today - caramel flan, which is similar to a creme caramel, but made with condensed and evaporated milks. I'm taking it all to my sister's house, so it should work well to be able to heat and serve with minimal fuss and mess there while still being a bit fancy.
Sounds delish! I've never tried a caramel flan or Carnitas before
yum
JFC every goddamn bricks and mortar retailer has been so desperate to start becoming a "marketplace" they've made themselves and their websites utterly fucking useless
I just wanted to see if woolies had brulee torches in stock for me to walk down and pick up. Instead I get wall to wall listings for their "market partners" and if you're gonna pull that bullshit then what the absolute fuck are you for.
So much this. I try to filter out marketplace shit where possible. It’s usually the same junk sold at kogan, catch, mydeal etc.
Trying to find anything before htting up a Bunnings is a complete shitshow now
Ten minutes without worrying that Ted Cat is going to bite my bum. Is that too much to ask?
( he's on the balcony meowing like a sad waif )
Work has been a bit wild, the two new people at work (who joined a month after me) are thinking of leaving.
It's insane, the phones have been going nuts, they want us to priotise the new inquires while also staying on top of all the emails to complete. But the phones have been going nuts so we're behind. Shit flows downhill so upper is shitting on middle, shitting on us. They've introduced KPIs but averaged it over 8 hours instead of 7 (2x 15 min breaks, 1x 30min lunch) so they don't make sense.
On breaks, we're always behind. We have to take them in order, so as the late shift I don't have lunch until 3pm.
The office is an echo chamber, so quite loud, but they want us in office full-time. Not feasible when clients can hear the other operators so clearly they think the lines have crossed.
I could go on. I think if the other two and I left, it'd leave the business in complete shit. I'm smashing their stupid KPIs, but I want to cry everyday from the utter mismanagement of the call centre. It's bush week every day and I'm tired

You know when you can't be bothered cooking but you end up doing it anyway and it turns out really good. Yeah.
caught my reflection in a mirror. My god I look like a mess! Not physically (I've kind of got that whole exhausted but a little bit sexy thing going on) but the eyes.... they look so run down, and the smile just looks off. 3 rough nights sleep plus 2 early morning starts appear to be taking their toll, even if my mood is still ok.
Whoops, managed to sleep for 10 hours straight and got up half an hour ago. Haven't slept this long in forever even when I've been exhausted. Absolutely starving, need to get around to making a proper lunch today instead of potato gems and frozen fish fillets...
PTV logic is weird
Meanwhile, I'm using the same Transperth SmartRider that I was issued when I was a beta tester of the program in 2003.
(just an FYI, this is the expiration date of the Myki pass loaded on to it, not the card itself. I do get what you're saying though)
Anyone else use a linux distro as main computer?
I tried to a few years ago with Ubuntu but it was missing a lot of apps and games I liked or needed to use for various reasons. These days I unfortunately still use windows as a main, but I have Ubuntu in a dual partition with windows on my laptop
I have Mint on dual boot and a VM image, but mostly Win10.
There are two laptops on my desk at home. One dual boots between MacOS and Windows (90% Windows) and the other is running Fedora 39. If I had to point at one of them as my "main" computer, it'd be the dual-booting one. I use both fairly heavily, though.
Yep! Current daily driver is Ubuntu but I have tinkered with fedora in the past. I am not a gamer but am a programmer and find I have everything I need for work/life easily available. I am comfortable on the command line which helps but if it's set up then anyone can use it I reckon. All my coding stack is open source. And libre Office is a pretty good replacement for MS office (without the shitful 365 cloud garbage)
I have also used Mac regularly and I can't think of much I can do on one and not the other.
Happy to answer any more specific question - feel free to PM me. Not that I know how that works on lemmy.
Beach sunsets are pretty sunsets
Finished book 2 in the Silo trilogy, and tbh... This was definitely not as great a read as the first book - actually quite hated it by the end, felt rushed and disjointed in the third part and I didn't care about most of the characters; worst of all the writing felt so lazy when it came to the technology and certain key developments. So much hand-waving and incredibly plot-convenient tech... anyway, I'm committed now and I'd just like to see where this all goes, so onto the final book.
Grocery shopping - everything $1 - $2 more expensive. Bring on the review of price gouging.
Over the last year, golden circle cordial has gone from $3.20 to $5. I’d switched from cottees at $5.90 a bottle, and here we are now..
Sure the prices have increased 25% -35% but we must not forgot averages wages are 1/3 of what they were in the 1970s. If you are earning $3,000 a month now if we had 70s wages you would be getting $9,000.
Bastards in Australia have a way of distracting us from the hard issues and the real culprits.
Employers/news media encourages talk about rent and prices because it means we aren't talking about wages.
Farmers like talk of global warming because it means we don't talk about the 100 years of damage farming and farming pollution has done to the environment.
Industry likes it when we talk of household water restrictions so we don't look at the subsidies and water waste of farming and mining
It would not surprise me if we pushed hard on the issues activists would be bumped off just like are in other countries.
It isn't only about the wages (a lot of it is wages), another huge factor is productivity. With technology and automation, the same number of people can do so much more than they could in the 70's. Employers are getting far more output from the same number of staff than they ever used to.
Protests about ten years ago predicting these very issues did get the bum's rush
7 bucks for 4 oat bars this morning. taking the ABSOLUTE piss.
I agree and I can't wait for this.
Bring it on. Minipeelers favourite cheese used to cost $6 per block (that was the reason I first tried it, it wasn't too costly). It is now $10.90. We used to enjoy the odd treat of icecream or some sweet biscuits. They've gone up so much in price I can't justify it. Anything that's not strictly necessary is out.

Mother has advise she will be stopping by to drop off some things and to make sure I am still alive. Not going to lie even if I can only stare at her from a distance I think it will be nice for my brain.
Also on a high note, I opened my curtains a little bit today for the first time since Sunday and have cracked the window for a little fresh air. Still feel disgusting, and it appears my immune system is non-existent as I break out in all sorts of things, but at least I have some freshness coming at me.
Take care mate. I've never knowingly had it, but your posts got me thinking about the last booster I had. I could have sworn it was last year, but according to MyGov/Medicare the last was actually June 2022. I'll be hitting up the local Amcal later for some sweet Bivalent action.
so many gentle hugs, take care, rest and drink lots of water
Why do the politicians even bother.
I'm reading a discussion about reading
and to me the saddest thing about having ptsd was for many years I was too ill and mentally tired to read books. ( other than a few specialist psychiatry books ) So lacking in mental stamina I couldn't even watch movies
so now when I watch movies I really appreciate it. I still don't read as much as I used too. This is something that still gives me real grief 😔
abuse takes so much away from a person
These are the small steps to recovery and good on you. You may not read as much as you used too, but you're also probably living a completely different life that you may not have the time to read as much.
But you read or listen to audiobooks and watch movies and that's just as good.
time, I have nothing but time 😔
to me reading and watching is also learning , I think about what I have "consumed"
writers and artists put so much effort in the work, they want to entertain or educate ,
first read and watch is for entertainment, the second and further I think a bit more
Hugs. It can come back eventually. Now I am at the point where when I start to lose interest in music or I can't concentrate to read that it's a signal and I know I am gonna need to do something to stop the slide back.
Its an amazing feeling as those things start to come back. I am glad you have movies back.
-big hugs-
My sunset piccy.
Good swim, no doggo pats although I almost ran over a pug at low speed because it's the same colour as the path so that's something.
That's so lovely. The world is a beautiful place. 😊
I just mixed up all the My Dog tins so little dog gets a different one every day. He does not give a shit what flavour it is nor if it's the same flavour every day for two weeks but I care and that's what matters.
Mixing red and white wine never ends well.
This one hurts today.
Oof...thots and pears your way
Did a big clean out of my personal email. Mass delete of promotional junk mail that seems to turn up regardless of ticking ‘do not send emails’ when making online purchases. Unsubscribed from most. Got a few ‘need 3 days to process your unsubscribe’ or ‘error, unable to unsubscribe at this time’ and other thoroughly bullshit excuses.
If any of them are Australian, that's illegal here. If an Australian company sends you more junk after you have told them to stop, you can report them to ACMA. The fines they get are not insignificant.
Good to know. I’ll keep an eye on it. If no one reports them they’ll just keep on doing it!

What do you get if you cross a cow and a rooster?
Roost beef.
A mate of mine is a nurse and I got him a red crayon that can attach to his lanyard.
Sometimes he needs to draw blood.
Dan you are making a laughing stock of this thread. I'm sure we haven't herd the last of it!
😐
Early estimates project hundreds of millions of dollars improvement to the city of Shepperton once floodwaters rise, properly prices alone set to skyrocket when instead of living in a shithole town you get to live next to a nice new lake instead.
with mosquitoes 😊
( these towns used to be nice, there was work and a place for everyone, then kennet slashed all the country public services and the towns died )
Tonight's dinner is sorted.
Truffle fettuccini with chicken and field mushrooms in a creamy parmesan garlic sauce
Anybody want to guess how much I spent on booze on the cruise?
Keep in mind that in order to make the booze drinks package worth it, I would have had to have spent $75 every day on alcohol (which is how much more on top of the non-booze package I got it would have cost).
So as long as my total is below $750 I made the right choice.
Closest guess wins umm.. a prize of some kind.. I'll figure it out. Guesses open until 9pm.
$0. I don't think you had any cos you got the covid.
I'm guessing $23 on a single fancy drink, which you could only half taste.
$480 on boozes.
Fifty bucks.
Ahh the prize thingy makes a lot more sense now. Even on a cruise, I can't imagine spending $75 a day on booze! That's insane.
Locking in Tree fiddy
Assuming that on the 10 days of the cruise, 3 days you didn't drink much if any at all cos feeling like dogshit. Also assuming average price of a booze was between 15 and 20 dollars - so to make the package you'd have to drink 4-5 boozes per day every day, or at least 6-7 boozes on the days you did drink boozes which seems like a lot. I think your booze bill would top out at around $500 at most and might be around $300. I'll go with the latter - $300.
I’m going to go with 300 dollaroos
Trying to watch a specific movie. Checked Netflix, Foxtel, and amazon prime. Movie not there. But then we find it on Amazon but it’s asking for more money to watch it. Is Amazon movies some extra money grabbing thing ??? It should not be this hard.
Amazon has 2 parts to it. Prime is the streaming service, like Netflix. Some movies are included. In addition to this, they also have a buy/rent business for other movies, same as Google store or Apple iTunes.
Chilli patch is still kicking. Giving them good doses of GoGo juice (which I think is basically seasol but better.. maybe) and tomato food and haven't killed them so that's good to see. Might be time to introduce the Potassium. Whether to go liquid or potash pellets I'm not sure yet.
big thai one on the left is having a great time and turning into quite the dense shrubbery.
But the one I'm reallly looking forward to are the little piri piri ones (bottom right). Just hope they weren't the cultivar that, thanks to a sneaky wayward bee, x bred with cayennes last year because they tasted like shit.
Which also brings us toooo...

Whoops. Zooki treated me to the 'feed me bitch' bite yesterday - partly due to not being able to have her favourite food any more and partly because she's a little shit' and it's blown up like crazy.
The doctor has given me two lots of strong antibiotics and signed me off work for the rest of the week as I'd be in and out of latex gloves. I admit I'm not weeping tears of blood.
In other news the pre negotiation negotiations for The (hopefully) New Place have started, with much emailing and texting. I've also spotted another place which ticks even more of the boxes than this one, although it's not as nice. And let's face it, around that area there's always a unit for sale.
I did a little bit of googling but wondering if anyone else might know, what kind of alcohol would they have drunk in pubs around the 1890s? It appears it was mostly beer and rum - which is a bit wild to me. I don't associate rum with Australia at all and I think of that time, I think of American westerns and drinkin' whiskey yeehaw!
Didn't Sydney/NSW colony have a whole coup and military dictatorship over rum in the 1800's? My history is a little hazy, but I remember the Rum Rebellion being a thing from school.
Yep! And I wanna say Rum was essentially currency. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rum_Rebellion
I don’t associate rum with Australia at all
hon, what do you think Bundy is?
Rum, bathtub gin, beer (often adulterated). Rum meaning strong alcohol distilled from fruit rather than grain. Humanity has always looked to fermented drinks if only for oblivion, and there was little to no regulation of quality or quantity. Refer one of my favorite books 'The Much Lamented Death of Madam Geneva'. And the let down after the boom years of the 1880s (in Melbourne at least) was severe and very damaging for a lot of people. For litry source material for 1890s, try C J Dennis (poet and journalist who died of the drink). His famous poems were collected as The Sentimental Bloke. The real gem is his take on Romeo & Juliet, titled Her Name's Doreen, which cracks me up to this day. @Nath's comment below is pertinent, but largely outdated by 1890. It's true that the first military detachment to the new colony in Port Jackson was known as the Rum Corps, and deserved it. Not only for the widespread corruption and use of rum as currency, but also referring to the cockney english usage of 'rum' meaning suspicious or shonky dealings in general. This had largely been sorted by the ever present Governor Macquarie by the 1850s. The 1890s were post the largest gold rushes. There was a minor gold rush on Goodman's Creek near Bacchus Marsh in that time period and the bigger gold rushes to the Palmer River in FNQ, but these didn't really create much change in the drinking culture as such as far as I know. The gold rushes in the Victorian & NSW alpine areas were after that - more early 1900s. I'm looking forward to your next volume.
EDIT: the name of the Romeo & Juliet poem is The Play.
Sugarcane industry was established in Australia by then, so of course rum followed very quickly. Bundaberg rum has been around for a long time, but I’m sure there would have been plenty of smaller makers and of course home brews.
Only 22 at the moment, I used to wear hoodies and trackies til 26

We purchased moved into our townhouse in 2022, and except for me making a couple of calls to ask about fees and things, we haven't heard anything from the owners corporation about meetings, plans or anything else. I suspect it's the same for other townhouses.
I don't know if our block just has a rubbish owners corporation manager, but does anyone know if they are obligated to communicate anything to the property owners?
Our old OC manager was an absolute stickler for the rules, to the point where I stopped going to the AGMs in person because it would just drag on for hours. His replacement is a bit more casual but still does things by the book. To answer your question, they should absolutely be communicating with you and the rest of the OC. Check the responsibilities here: https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/housing/owners-corporations/buying-into-an-owners-corporation/what-is-an-owners-corporation

I saw Alcaraz walking in Southbank yesterday when I was out for dinner with a friend yesterday!! He was literally 2m from me and looked like he was enjoying the city so I didn't want to bother him for a photo (also anxiety)
I had to do a triple take if it was actually him!
I have no idea who that is 😀

Currently here for the AO, former world no. 1
The winner with the $50 guess is PeelerSheila! I spent $126.50 over 2 days then didn't drink booze for the rest of the trip because that's when I got sick.
Enjoy your celebratory Numbat!
Well done @PeelerSheila@aussie.zone!
Omg thankyou! I love it!
Is that some AIs idea of a Numbat? Because that's not a Numbat.
