Yeah, but hopefully this has at least made people aware of the law now, enough that this kind of thing will get people reported quickly.

I worry, though, that people might keep an animal secretly until it's non-rehabitable, at which point they figure they can get away with doing the same thing these people have done.

I don't know if it's possible under the law, but swift seizure of the proceeds of crime would go a long way. Probably most people aren't going to want to go to the hassle of getting licensed, so at least they will be black-and-white in the wrong and it's doesn't have to be investigated in detail whether they're making profit.

I imagine (I'm not a lawyer) that it might be hard to delineate what exactly is commercial gain from the animal, and what is commercial gain from 'expertise' or 'life experience' of the keeper.

I'll be interested to see where the book deal goes from here. I expect proceeds will be given to wildlife causes (upkeep of the bird is fair enough), and I'm hoping there will be a HEFTY chapter towards the end about how you should not do what they did.

There's specific exemptions in these laws for clubs. I'm not a lawyer, but from what I've read, I think if they were to do the paperwork to set up the room as a women-only club somehow, they'd be in the clear.

Off-topic, but because a few people have been shocked when I've mentioned it lately, just a note that Schwartz Media outlets - including the Saturday Paper - have long been under boycott for their erasure of Palestinian people (the owners are strongly pro-Israel):

I think the men-only clubs have either been granted special exemptions, or pre-date legislation and are grandfathered-in.

The Age / SMH do paywall (circumventably), but I think you get n free articles a month (tied to browser cookies), and also I think they mark some articles as 'free' if they deem it so.

In any case it's easier to just preempt it and put an archive link in the post body as a matter of habit. That way not only do you not get the inevitable comment about a paywall, but you also always have the archived version if it gets deleted, edited, or the link goes down for whatever reason (temporarily or permanently).

Another thing you can try is opening the link in private browsing mode or clearing your cookies for the site. Either both these will work, or neither will, so you don't need to try both. Clearing cookies might wipe your 'free article counter' and mean you don't need to worry about it for a little while, but opening a link in private browsing mode is often quicker, so it's a matter of preference.
