Why 'Star Trek' made San Francisco the center of the universe

Coffee from italy

  • Of my rotation of brewers, I find myself enjoying the coffee that I get out of my cucumella, the Neapolitan flip over brewer, the most.

Intense, rich flavor from just about any kind of dark roast, even a little viscosity, with a minimum of fuss compared to a moka pot.

My moka pot gives even more intense flavor, but it's just too much work to clean, and takes too long because it actually requires you to boil the water inside it to actually work.

I really, really hate prying the filter funnel out of the moka pot boiler.

So much so that I put a dent along the edge of the funnel so that I can more easily pry the damned thing out, which is something I have to do twice in the brewing process, which gets old really fast.

  • GroceOut is not that fancy.

It's mostly blends, with some store brands and national brand runs (Starbucks, Dunkin', etc,) that are almost expired.

I saw some Korean pre-brewed in laminated bags that were probably intended for restaurant use.

Every now and they they get some single origin. I've seen random Ugandan, Mexican, but nothing that would be considered terribly expensive like Kona, Blue Mountain, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, or stuff like that.

It's stuff that the wholesalers are trying to get rid of cheaply before it expires.

That stuff isn't bad at all, most of the time.

Just don't buy the obvious cheap instant, and it's fine.

  • Grocery Outlet, a US nationwide discount grocery chain that specializes in discounted products from overproduction runs.

A surprisingly diverse selection of coffee is usually available, and lets me sample different varieties, some even in whole bean.

Some that I've tried near its "best by" date has been decent.

Their house brand has been pretty good.

  • Mandarin Chinese isn't just a language.

Its vernacular is manipulated by the Chinese Communist Party to reflect political goals.

This is paralleling the concept of Orwellian "goodthink" from 1984's Newspeak.

After all, it's hard to think of rebellion, if there are no words or phrases for new concepts.

It's one of the reasons why the CCP wants to destroy related languages like Cantonese, so that they can manipulate thought more easily.

  • My late review copy pasted from !movies@piefed:

    I just saw it yesterday.

It was just okay. I really wanted to like it more than I did.

I thought David Harbour's Red Guardian was his usual charismatic loser-with-a-heart greatness, and Wyatt Russell's US Agent and Lewis Pullman's Sentry were good, but the rest of the cast was forgettable, and Sebastian Stan's Bucky/Winter Soldier could have been cut out of the movie entirely.

    Then there's the writing...

There's no emotional center to the story. The characters lumber and tumble from one scene to the next. As asked several times in the movie, why are these guys hanging out together?

Then there's the visual concept: Here you have a collection of great hand-to-hand fighters: A Black Widow clone, 2 Captain America clones, Ghost had an interesting fighting style, but there's barely any hand-to-hand combat to showcase their strength.

Oh sure, there was that fight in the lobby, but....
::: spoiler spoiler ...all that's for naught, as Valentina watches her minions get beat up for a few minutes, before getting on the PA and giving them an invite upstairs.
::: ...which I felt was infuriating as it rendered the best fight scene pointless.

And then there's the sequence where they take down the big bad... ::: spoiler spoiler ... Void/Sentry/Bob. Comic books have never done emotional psychobabble story resolutions well, and it certainly isn't pulled off here. :::

Was this the MCU movie that got great reviews, and was supposed to take the franchise in a new direction, and revitalize it?

    Not on your bloody life!

  • You could try googling for "chemex compatible filters" then carefully looking for where the products come from.

Here's one that says "from Canada" on the box, and "Canadian pulp" in the description. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D8BFP4C3

But where was it actually made? Doesn't say

Never mind. It's made by the parent company of NutriBullet, Alchemy Worldwide, which is American.

  • I had hoped that the humans of the 25th Century Federation had evolved or developed educational, political , and other social systems to where bigotry wasn't a large problem anymore.

Kind of like getting rid of money.

Otherwise, there will always be a dark undercurrent of prejudice and hatred in all human dealings, and maybe the Romulans, Klingons, and other antagonistic spacefaring civilizations are justified in not wanting to deal with a human-led Federation.

  • I would avoid lemmy.world, just to spread the risk around.

A mid sized instance like lemmy.ca, lemmy.cafe, sopuli.xyz should work well

And of course, check to see that your prospective new instance isn't de-federated from communities that are important to you, or something else strange, like lemmy.zip allegedly geoblocks UK IP addresses.

Some large instances are defederated from lemmynsfw.com, so if those /c's are important to you...

lemmy.ml is defedded from ani.social, so if any of those /c's are important to you...

Several instances are defedded from hexbear.net, beehaw.org. Again, if you like any /c's on those instances...

And of course, if an instance hosts a lot of groups that are important to you, it might be a good idea to sign up there.
