  • If you gave a person a choice at the beginning of their job between a day off or an office field trip, most would probably just choose an extra day off.

Then why would you force anything else? You know what they'd pick but you're still considering forcing some bullshit holiday? I've worked both type of places and I'll take the day off every single time.

A truly diverse office will be full of very different types of people - people that'd rather be with their kids, older people that won't enjoy the same things, introverts, people keeping their mental disorders secret, etc etc. Statistically, probably some women that are uncomfortable around some of the men because of some shit they overheard.

You don't know what's best for every single one of these individuals. They do.

  • My comment copied from above:

I'm reading through Discworld for the first time now. Terry's genius cannot be overstated. Each next book is an absolute revelation (well. Eric was good not maybe not a revelation...). The way the characters grow and become individuals, seemingly with their own real lives. It hurts to know Sir Terry will never be able to tell us more about this fantastical, commentary-laden, hilarious world.

    GNU Sir Terry Pratchett

  • you're demonstrating at least one logical fallacy - the false dichotomy that our only choices are "vote for genocide" or "vote against genocide". this grossly misrepresents the situation. and I'm pretty sure you know what you're doing.

if you want to change things, do it from the ground up not the top down. vote for the "little" positions, the local elections. they've put us in this position with these small roles and gerrymandering. fix the illness, not the symptoms.

  • haha, retire. as long as we're dreaming, i guess i'll spend my time riding unicorns on the moon.

but seriously, if this is somehow really an option for you... i'd teach community education classes. art, programming, basic cooking, whatever. i've met a lot of great friends in community ed. i think it'd be rad to contribute back.

  • Poorer? No. Richer? Also no. Cheaper? Some things, like housing and wine. Other things, same or more expensive (such as electronics) Healthcare was at least as good but easier to get into.

I was constantly surprised just how normal/at home I felt. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
