  • I was moreso referring to people who either plan to be able to flee the country or who plan on doing some "legal-if-jury-nullification" actions themselves.

    After all, none of the small German resistance during the nazi era would've been able to do anything had their identities been known to the regime. The same applies to guerilla warfare against far more powerful enemies. Remaining low profile allows for dealing the most damage possible.

    Being loud and public only works for democracies, not for fascist dictatorships.

  • Just in case any Americans need to hear it:

    You may not necessarily want to donate to this fundraiser, depending on your future plans. You will almost certainly face increased monitoring after donating and you may want to remain low-profile in a fascist US.

  • Section 230 doesn't apply to lemmy.world already because their instance is hosted in the EU and has to comply with laws that make them responsible for what's posted already. Or rather, responsible if content isn't removed quickly.

    It's also why comments supporting Luigi Mangione's alleged murder are removed as they would make lemmy.world liable.

  • Ah, we're both right.

    I assumed that the tax would result in whole numbers but upon further inspection (i.e. trying it out it in a calculator) it turns out that few prices would result in values that don't have overhanging millidollars.

    The solution is obviously to force prices to be whole dollar and to further allow sale taxes only in increments of 5%.

  • No?

    Say there is a tax of x and someone purchases both a and b.

    The total would be:

    total = x * (a + b)
          = x * a + x * b

    As long as all items result in an amount that doesn't have to be rounded if purchased individually then the combined amount will not have to be rounded either.

  • Ah, turns out I'm somewhat wrong. From what I can tell, the city centers in the US are denser but if you include the entire city Europe has generally denser cities.

    Most US cities are significantly taller in the center due to skyscrapers and highrises. Most European cities are more "horizontal" in that regard by having many multi-story apartment blocks instead of a handful of highrises.

  • Sure, but I'd argue the largest aspect is cultural.

    There's a reason France's protests are significantly more disruptive than those of other European nations, despite similar social resources and significantly worse police brutality.

    I mean, the US has denser cities than most of Europe. It's not impossible to have large-scale demonstrations with hundreds of thousands of protestors in them.

    I suspect it's just that most Americans aren't all that interested in changing the status quo for the better. The amount of apathy is perhaps only topped by Russia.

  • You can't take days off for protests in Germany either.

    Which is why protests are almost always held on the weekend to allow as many people as possible to join them, since significantly fewer people are working.

  • Are you sure? From everything I've heard MP3 bitrates at 192 or above are generally considered to be transparent.

    In case you want to do it more scientifically, try ABX testing. It's a bit time consuming but it should provide clearer results.

  • This woman likes set theory because she was involved in a set theory workshop:

    https://dmg.tuwien.ac.at/sandramueller/conferences/

    But you're kind of right that it's not great that math is still a strongly male dominated field. There is not a single woman's name in the Wikipedia article for set theory, where I first tried to find a counterexample.

    Also, you don't necessarily need set theory to arrive at vacuous truths. Logic is enough:

    FALSE => [statement]

    Still, I think vacuous truths are fun because they are meaningless. Especially because they have to be considered in math or else your carefully constructed proof becomes invalid.
