  • Not sure this reply will get seen by the kind people who have helped explain this situation to me but I just want to say “thank you”. And I get it. The ethos here is the diversity and the federation — Reddit subs were easily corrupted by power hungry turds… anyway… there were a lot of thoughtful replies and I appreciate all that.

I still feel new here but I’m pleased to be welcomed by a lot of very thoughtful and patient people.

  • You get me. Yes — exactly.

I can barely figure all this out and my goal is exactly where you are talking about — to make adopting Lemmy as easy as possible to attract as many users away from the corporate social media as possible.

I want all corporate social media flat lined.

  • I suppose that I can personally tolerate same-theme communities across multiple instances. I feel like I was a late arrival at Reddit and when I grasped it’s potential, it became an important source of information, entertainment and community for me. Then it imploded.

But a lot of people are still over there and I guess I hope to see it flatlined completely.

So I hope that Lemmy can be as easy to use as possible.

But this thread has persuaded me that redundant groups are healthy. I just hope new users come here and abandon all corporate social media.

  • Please tell me someone can get this to the SUITS creators. I’m still watching and it just gets better. There’s something for everyone: intrigue, criminality, romance, and when Harvey loses it: violence.

  • Truth: I have seen no ads “with the hugging families around winter.”

It’s not the holidays that are causing angst. It’s the ads.

And they are easy to opt out of:

Choose platforms, legal or otherwise, that do not expose you to ads.

Yes — we have family coming and I was up at 5am cleaning — but I’m glad I’ve done that. Extrinsic motivation is what it takes to get me to do unpleasant tasks — so I agree with you about the stress piece.

But perhaps not seeing all the schmaltzy advertising makes the holidays more bearable?

  • If I may, might privacy be both a personal, individual endeavor and a collective endeavor?

On the personal level, can’t we foil the corporate intrusion by choosing apps in the Fediverse?

And on the collective level, can’t promotion of the Fediverse help?

I’m aware that city and county records often contain my street address and that doesn’t bother me. I’ve got to pay taxes and vote.

But I look at it this way: that’s my front facing public identity. Basically the one I use at work that gets a paycheck. Not private. And yes, that’s a pity and that war is lost, but I lose nothing because of that.

But then there’s my identity that shares the goals of global groups that chafe against injustice and oppression. All that work separated from my public identity by multiple barriers. Personably not perfect privacy — watch The Conversation by Francis Ford Coppola for a discussion of perfect privacy.

Is this kind of approach practical and one that means we haven’t lost?
