  • I’ve been really enjoying the app again. More importantly, I hope you’re enjoying life a bit as well.

Minor thought, so minor that I’m commenting here instead of on GitHub, I would love the option to disable the snappy new animations.

I find it very unnatural for the rate of scrolling to change mid-scroll. That is, when scrolling a community or my profile, the scroll motion goes super fast and then slows back down. For me, this feels a lot like going up a staircase with different height steps.

  • TIL about trademark erosion. Also, thanks for a proper response.

Trademark erosion, or genericization, is a special case of antonomasia related to trademarks. It happens when a trademark becomes so common that it starts being used as a common name and the original company has failed to prevent such use.

I guess Nintendo fought it successfully by getting the world to call the thing a “game console” rather than calling it a Nintendo. Hoover failed to defend the verb “Hoover” and lost it.

In this case, it just seems like the win is for Taco Bell and their efforts to gain, use and profit from the term. And that makes it feel a little gross and brutish. They could prove me wrong though.

  • What makes it fucking stupid? Is it because it reaches a critical mass of usage, so the people get to take it back? Something else?

As an aside, I have a new product idea: Zoidberg’s Super Bowl of Cereal: I’m Lovin’ It!

  • Nespresso machines are definitely pressurized and temp controlled. Keurig, less so.

I read something somewhere once (great source, right?) regarding Keurig temps, and they weren’t consistent or optimal. And the pressure is more like a hose with an attachment as opposed to a pressure washer.

Some K cups will empty out when you use them, too. From what I’ve run into, that’s typically the fancy flavor ones. But some are just coffee grounds that get a suboptimal water flow at suboptimal temps going through them.

Someone can correct me on what I’m remembering though.

  • I can't find my source for this memory, but I recall several years ago reading about Apple introducing automatic device resprings / restarts overnight. I think I still had my iPhone X at the time.

In my experience, it only happens while charging. I might have to cruise the old jailbreak subreddits to find whatever I think I'm remembering here.

  • NetNewsWire supports multiple methods for accounts -- local, various cloud services, and self-hosted. And it is free. I highly recommend someone interested in RSS check the app out and subscribe to a few feeds.

Looking for some starter feeds to sub? Check out Feedspot's RSS directory.

Hosting your own FreshRSS instance is totally optional, and is absolutely a proper option for someone privacy-focused. It doesn't have to be a big, scary monster -- simple options exist, e.g., using fly.io to host FreshRSS, as someone wrote about on this blog.

  • Would the problem be solvable by saying Google needs to break from their approach (do nothing, in this case), and work with Apple to incorporate Apple’s tech into Android by default?

Just trying to think through the finger pointing that happens as we reel in tech.

  • Nothing wrong with a Windows box as your server. Use what you know. Windows skills are a great asset in the world.

This issue is OS-independent, meaning you would have the same problem on a Raspberry Pi as you did on your Windows box.

    GLHF

  • Irrelevant, unless your pihole is running on your DHCP server. Does the server running pihole have a statically assigned IP that is within the DHCP range being assigned to other devices?

Static addresses should be outside of your DHCP range, ideally. If you can’t change the range, and assuming sequential handouts of IPs from your router among other things, you can try setting the server’s static IP to a bigger number.

  • FWIW, my Plex Pass has worked to be much less than that since I purchased it.

Much (not all) of the negative I see about Plex is associated with cost of a Plex Pass. If subscribing monthly, it costs more. If you play the long game with the Lifetime Pass, it’s dirt cheap and pretty darn solid.

  • Maybe the content reached its peak, but I’d argue we are in a better place now UX-wise.

Full disclosure: I type this from a network running pihole. Flashing banner ads to other people’s blogs were definitely better than todays adverts — and I’m looking at you, most recipe sites.
